Those who follow me for a while are aware that Im passionate about AI and blockchain. At the same time I'm concerned about those technologies. Today I would like to share one of my worries with you ... |
---|
INTRODUCTION
Few days ago I had pleasure to read @xinyuhe post called: "Fake News and A.I. Porn, Why Blockchain Technology Will Prevail":
https://steemit.com/cryptocurrency/@xinyuhe/fake-news-and-a-i-porn-why-blockchain-technology-will-prevail
@xinyuhe directs our attention towards discussions about Artificial Intelligence and some latest achievements in that field. And I must admit that what I've learned impressed me and scared at the same time.
It seems that with current solutions available on the market it is possible to create fake audio and videos that look and sound very real. And for untrained human eyes, it may not be that easy at all to be able to recognize if you've watched fake content. |
---|
Pretty soon we might not be able to believe our own eyes and ears. We may wonder so often what is real and what's a lie. We can receive voice messages from our brother, who went for vacation and got kidnapped and is begging us to help him with ransom. And many of us would fall for it.
FAKE OBAMA / REAL OBAMA
Impossible? Let me tell you something about a startup called Lyrebird. They just released their product which "allows users to create an audio clip of anyone saying anything".
No words can describe this impressive yet scary development better than watching this short video for yourself:
"Fake Obama created using AI video tool - BBC News"
At the end of this short video some reputable professor from University of Washington said that:
every technology can be used in some negative way and so we all should work towards making sure it't not going to happen.
And even one of the interesting directions is once you know some how to create something then you know how to reverse engineer it.
And so one could create methods for identifying edited videos versus real videos.
She said that looking very optimistic and happy. With a bright shiny smile on her face. Happily sharing a "solution" that is not really a solution for regular people. Or at least I dont see it that way.
To be able to protect ourselfs from misinformation we will now need to be able to identify real content from fake. And this time it's going to require some decent skills and resources. Which means that at the end of the day most of us will be vonurable. It will be even harder to tell what's real and what is not. How will you even be able to tell if you're talking online to real human or an advanced AI ? |
---|
I'm following this subject related to AI closely and it fascinates me, but at the same time I think that we should be really scared. Not because AI will destroy humanity (Terminator) but rather AI will change the world and many of us will not be able to find a place in this new world. Isn't it scary enough?
STEEMIT
Sometimes I wonder if it would be possible to create AI, that would study posts on Steemit and then would manage it's own blogging channel. This AI would be able to do research, study, collect information and then create valuable posts. On top of that, it could easily target audience in a way we humans will never be able to. And dropping 100 unique comments per hour wont be a problem as well. It may possibly happend. Or maybe some of us still believe that it's Sc-Fi?
CONSEQUENCES
I really like what @xinyuhe wrote:
If the footage and audio generated by these programs become indistinguishable from live footage, what are the implications?
If Cambridge Analytica was simply able to manipulate an entire population just from well placed ads on a social media network, imagine what fake video and audio propaganda can do to disrupt political status quo and influence people’s beliefs and opinions.
I dont think it requires any more comments. I believe that many of us share similar worries. It is our job to share our concerns and voice them loud out. Hopefully we will be heard. I think sharing our worries and building awarness is the best think we can do.
CENSORSHIP
Let's have an example. How difficult will it be to create more FUD within cryptocommunity faking news and backing them up with "real" videos.
Weather we like it or not, but it seem that official goverment run media may be more reliable than ever before comparing to "independent" informations available online. Perhaps some of us will even decide to go back to traditional "paper" newspapers, knowing that whatever is printed is "real".
At the moment, our population is generally against censorship and I see many reasons why is it considered "evil". With blockchain technology where nothing can be removed and censorship hardly exist we will most likely face insane amount of "independent misinformation".
What's your view on that topic? What kind of world are we going to live in? World of misinformation where trust will be something hard to find?
Please share with me.
Yours,
Piotr

Good to know.
While previously I did not know that AI already reached this level, I am not surprised a lot that it did.
The obvious thing to remind, is that the real Obama (and probably any other person you may choose) is already fake, and in other cases just wrong.
However, from now on, I will be more aware of the possibility you showed here.
How to prevent artificially edit faked content from affecting?
Great seeing your comment again @stimialiti
Thanks for your never ending support :)
Let's put Obama on the side and forget about him or other politicians for a moment.
Can you imagine that right now AI could already create 'fake' video of your favourite influencer in which he would make some fake statements, which could affect your financial decisions
Some people mentioned that we need to develop solutions that will allow us to distinguish fake audio/video from real one.
That's a great business opportunity for those who can provide such a solutions. Dont you think?

You will not fall for it if and only if you are not personality centric person. Self-centered people don't care about Obama. Or Hollywood slaves. If you don't worship your fellow men you will not be deceived. For you are not driven by what you see and hear. Propaganda doesn't affect you. Your brother was kidnapped. Was he? Really. Try if you can. Sights and sounds can only influence if you are a slave of it. Sometimes being dead inside helps. If you are dead inside you will not be deceived ever. Besides AI doesn't have vocal cords. They cannot produce a sound without rare earth metals. AI is a scam believe me. It is fascinating but it cannot produce sound without compressing it into MP3. I train machines but they always yield errors. They can never reach perfection ever. Despite what they teach in school in the real world your calculus will not work.

Hello @crypto.piotr
SInce I started curate new Products on @steemhunt. I came in contact with the New and powerful projects powered by AI . But this your post has also taken me down a rabbit hole on the dangers of AI
I have always found it hard to understand how Humans thinks, they always find ways to abuse good things.
All the points you listed here have got me worried. We are living in a world where Social Media has Zombified millions of people, now Imagine what happens when AI is added to the mix
Thanks for bringing our awareness to this .

Thanks for your comment and sharing your thoughts @ogochukwu

I think AI will be about the same as technology has been so far, It will serve and destroy us. Social Media has destroyed how people behave towards each other, it has made them just the opposite of social...the benefits do not outweigh the effects in my opinion. I would prefer to roll back the advancements in technology and slow things down a bit although I know this is not possible, can't put the toothpaste back in the tube. I am just happy I was born at the time I was born, I will see more of the benefits than somebody born in 2018 without seeing the negative effects at their worst. I think technology is interesting but not really a good thing in many ways. Hope you're doing well too, I am just trying to hang in there!
Hi @vladivostok
Im very sorry for such a delay with my replies but currently Ive been overwhelmed with amount of work that has been related to my latest contest. I never expected to receive such an amazing support.

It’s been a crazy busy time for sure. Good to hear from you
i don't think most people ever thought for themselves, the psychology of that is the avoidance of guilt and responsibility . If you "do as you're told" then it can be never be your fault . A.I. is an inevitable step, just like the steam to the combustion engine and the light bulb from electricity. Just like global warming its ; o yea i love that david deutsch talk ; its not about preventing it, its already here. Its about dealing with it.
If you drive the theory further and you step away from homo-centrism (nothing to do with gay people) and you consider life to be just that then by all rules of nature technology would , even, no , definitely according to Darwin have a greater chance than carbon based ... it can survive in all kinds of environments, even DEEP SPACE, and it can adapt so
the scary bit there is like technology might actually be the next step in evolution. But to see that you can't consider humans to be at the center of it all. But that's observers paradox (as i call it ... i dont use schoolwords much) because you observe the whole of reality just from where you stand, from nowhere else, so it's easy to make that mistake.
And now for the really hard bit, like darwin is often misunderstood to have preached the law of the strongest, its actually the law of the ones most able to adapt BUT ... the thing with evolution is, for example, maybe homo sapiens werent really the best suited to survive in the long term (look at the state of the planet and its not like we have another one ready here if this one is kaputt) but they DID take out the competition.
and THAT by no means means they are the top of the chain, it just means they conquered the rest, and by doing so they might actually already have put an end to the species because one of the others they extinguished might actuall y have had more chance. It's not because its on top that it's the only one who could surive. The stronger might beat the smarter to a pulp, the smarter might lay a trap for the strong, and pick em off from a distance but the adaptables might simply fall in a hole during an earthquake. its a framework like statistics
SO, in short : technology with not its latest "evolution" of a.i. (which by no means can think for itself yet) might indeed be the way the universe has life prevail over aeons like that
(whew ... when i go, i go, right, sorry :p)
I honestly don’t even like what computers have done to life and how we live ... I would prefer to go back to times where we didn’t rely on them and back to no cell phones. Life was better for me back then
i can't remember ... i was about eight or nine when the old man bought a commodore 64 cos his friend told him it was "a thing" ... but he never looked at it so thats about when i wrote my first hello world ... i used to be a shy a-grade kid, nerdy even, almost stereotypical ... hayfever wouldnt let me play outside in summer, always a loner, even in kindergarten i stood against the wall during breaks wondering what was so much fun about kicking a ball around, watching and observing everyone.
Not that i'm socially awkward, way the other way actually, my last studies were social work actually socio-cultural but life decided otherwise , and now the state my life is in , without a computer and internet i would be completely isolated because in this place where i'm stuck there's nothing for me .
I understand what you're saying but seeing as computers are as old as world war 2 (adn some would say before that) its way from before our lifetime so they have always been here :)
I get it. I had an apple II and that was great. It got boring very fast for me and I went back to being a normal kid. You look around and everyone is on their phones. It’s lame. Life has changed and not for the better in my opinion and it’s getting worse if you ask me. If I could snap my fingers and the Internet and cell phones were gone I would do it. Right after clean my wallet out
lol ... well, i grew up an almost stereotypical nerdy kid, all except the glasses, i had hayfever so there was no playing outside in summer or spring. I've always like alone time anytime except with cats and girlfriends ... hence the cat that walked by himself reference from rudyard kipling. That computer saved me .. i hate television but when it comes to phones really, i usually turn it off when i go outside (tracking paranoia) and i dont even have a sim card in it, i keep a simcard in an old €15 samsung "dumb"-phone in case i need to make a call once or twice a year. I dont like the place i live in very much, and thats been a long time so if i didnt have my internet i would be socially isolated. I actually go out and talk to people in here, but when i go outside italk to about anyone too, im not socially awkward, that shy kid got killed by the rightwing environment i grew up in . but going outside to places where i want to be costs money
which i dont have :)
it IS a fact that if you're riding on a train or bus there's no conversation to be had anymore, and even when going out its like if you want to talk to someone even at a bar its best you text them first to see if they want to look up lol, i know what you mean.
An interesting read. The concerns you raised are concerns I also have so it would be sort of a banality to write at length about them. One question that I always grapple with is one of control. Who will steer the ship? And what will happen when ordinary people have access to these technologies? The scenario with Obama will, I presume, become commonplace. What if I have a vendetta against my neighbor or a family member, I can easily destroy his/her reputation using these devices.
We tend to look at corporations and how they manipulate the populace, but we also do our bit where this is concerned. Just look at social media. At the end of the day, AI is a double edged sword that needs a hand to wield it. Hence, it is less about AI and more about us as human beings using another tool to express the darker side of our characters.
Im glad you found it interesting :)
Thanks for your comment and sharing your thoughts @nicholas83
I appreciate a lot.
It seem that we're on the same page here. Sharing similar concerns.

At conferences developers are indicated to be careful cause there jobs could be AI-yfied, then they won't develop but administer and program the AI.
Let's go for a steemit AI-yfication :P
hi @sciencevienna
hahaha I hope it will never happend. how can we compete on steemit with AI? :)
yours
Piotr
Our sense for spontaneity and the fact that we suffer / cry after an end of a relationship with girl or boyfriend will make us competitve!
This is something that I think about a lot. Hopefully the solution will work in a similar way to the work around we’ve found for photoshopped images: a health everyday skepticism and an ability to distinguish trustworthy sources of information (and then triangulating with other trustworthy sources if still unsure). The sad truth of the matter here however if that its far easier to trust in a source of information that you agree with rather than one you disagree with, and with the information bubbles that we put ourselves in online tech like this could prove to make the fringes more extreme.
Thank you @nonzerosum for sharing your thoughts with me.
I just started to think about it a lot lately and Im not very happy with my thoughts and conclusions.
It seem that we're on the same page here.
Thx for comment and your constant support

Hi
Im not sure if I understand what you mean by that.
Those are big words but Im not sure what simple people (being victims of fake news and manipulation) can do to protect themselfs and "stay afloat and ascend the lies".
Thx for your engaging in conversation @machnbirdsparo
Trully yours,
Piotr
One of the things we need is clarity of purpose...
... even if just in one area of our lives.
I enjoy running over mountains. This opens my eyes to the flatness of wall.. of tv screens. Does not seem like much until we experience it for ourselves. On that note, I notice that, generally, the only other people I see out on the trails are boy scouts, ex-military, professors, and couples. Seems like all of those folk are looking for a deeper spiritual life.
There has always been fake news. Trump started out calling the traditional media as fake news. Centralized media felt that it lost control over the news they pushed because suddenly both people in power (Trump) and consumers (using the Internet and other sources that were no longer centralized) didn't support them as the official truth anymore. What came back is a fight from them claiming everything is either fake news or at least highly suspect, if it wasn't coming from them. They want to get the control back by asking to control and regulate all information out there. Of course they would again take a central role in this. At the same time technology is moving on. With deep data analytics, AI, deep fakes etc a lot of new things can be faked. Again, this would mostly be done by people in power (Facebook, Google, etc). However we can fight back, using our decentralized technologies. For every faked news item out there, data analytics and AI can be used to check the value of that news. Blockchain can be used to trace back pieces of info to the source, using smart contracts and tokens small AI researchers over the whole world can work together on AI etc etc The struggle for power will continue.
Great seeing your comment again @frankvvv
Thanks for your never ending support :)
But how expensive it would be to proceed with it. Not everyone could afford. Even currently it's hard to recognize which written news is real or fake.
Can you imagine that right now AI could already create 'fake' video of your favourite influencer in which he would make some fake statements, which could affect your financial decisions
Some people mentioned that we need to develop solutions that will allow us to distinguish fake audio/video from real one.

I like the way you described it :)

Wouldn't be that expensive. It's easier to detect fakes than it is to make them. These programs already do exist. Also, right now everyone can make "deep fakes". If you got a good GPU and some open source software + some days to let it calculate everything, you are good to go.
as long as it's more expensive to create fakes than to detect them, then we're quite safe
@crypto.piotr,
I do not accept every thing audio but however, if AI has brought another dimension to video stuff, then the world is in for trouble.
What we do know is that the world as we know it is heading to confusion in its totality. Of course we also know the source. From the father of all DECEPTION. Not surprised though. As we draw closer to the end of times, more bizarre stuffs will come on screen.
hi @praise-eu
Completly agree with you. I really enjoyed reading your short but mature comment
ps.
Just checked your profile just to realize that we seem to share a number of interests :)
In particular that we both share a similar passion towards cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology :)
I will follow you closely :)
Take care, Piotr
I find this text intriguing. This is the current situation my country as as we speak, politicians have been circumventing around the process of scoring cheap political point.
Creating fake motion pictures in the form of videos in a bid to launder the voice and images of their rivals.
My question is, can we ever detect whats real or fake. with A.I coming into the picture the level of deception might become massive
Trust in our personal beliefs aid our perception. While some beliefs can be shaped, e.g. an environmental stimulus that adds a temporary energy to our physiology, it is the core values that a book is more likely to shape than a morning headline.
Consider how TV made morning headlines with a cup of coffee the standard for the nuclear family between 1950 to 1980. The Internet is still subject to morning headlines. Why? We do not need to wait for ABC, CBS, FOX, CNN, or BBC to edit a story and fit a time slot. Yet this is how the world continues to turn. It did not turn this way before TV. Sure it is changing, but way to slow. When there is no urgent reason to slow us down, it is probably fake.
Alas.. I could rant on. Simply, I see the clarity in your words of query.
I actually have no clue how things were in states around that time. I guess Im still to young and to east european.
ps.
Do you think that world is changing to slow?
Thank you again for being so supportive.
The global information system is "finally" changing. College taught us how the Internet would change society. Years ago, innovators in the tech space let their exasperation known that the change was occurring too slowly. My example of how we obtain our news is uncommon. The example typically used is telecommuting replacing 9 to 5 workdays (although that would technically be owed more to the computer itself).
Trust in your personal believe system you said
waooooo........ that is really a hard thing to do now when what you believe in is subject to change based on what we see
That is why I threw in the book vs. news briefing analogy. Back in the 80s, long before the Internet, the word 'twit' was a derogatory term for someone who spent too much time watching tv. Now it is thrown around in daily conversation with the Office of the Presidency.
Pre-Internet, we walked to our local libraries for information. Today, reading is more common than tv, so I can see how the usage can change. However, I learned in obtaining a degree in aviation the importance of writing as a method for organized communication. A book, presents an opportunity to exchange life altering events of the mind. That is the kind of trust in oneself to which I referred.
very true
Im glad to hear that you found this text intriguing @maxiemoses-eu. Thx for sharing your thoughts.
I hope that one day i can disconnect myself from entire world and live my life far from it.
Can you imagine that right now AI could already create 'fake' video of your favourite influencer in which he would make some fake statements, which could affect your financial decisions.
Yours
Piotr
I wish you can disconnect from this, most likely I and many others might join you to that secure Island
previosly fake news use to be a social media thing but with A.I in the business of fake stunts when it comes to news then we are ready for a prime-time with this eventuality
@crypto.piotr imagine you switch on your tv one day and you see yourself saying something you are never aware of.... you get pushed to the point where you doubt your existence
this been facilitated by A.I been able to critically study your voice, your looks and your facial expression
who would believe when you tell the consumers of such content that looks are deceiving mankind
hi @maxiemoses-eu
Im luckily already half-disconnected. 3 years ago I got rid of my cellphone so right now Im only online once Im on my laptop. Very refreshing feeling to be able to disconnect yourself 100% from internet.
that would be a killer.
Some people mentioned that we need to develop solutions that will allow us to distinguish fake audio/video from real one.
That's a great business opportunity for those who can provide such a solutions. Dont you think?
Yours
Piotr
I wish to agree it might turn out to be a good piece of opportunity to dive into
but first off there might be a lot disagreement on weather the solution is actually real
............or a means to clear the names of those whose personalities have been laundered
Imagine where an AI protocol does the impersonation you can imagine the accuracy that comes with the facial expression and the voice intonation.
@crypto.piotr as much as I agree with the opportunity I think it might cause a divide on whats real and why you say something real to me is considered fake
because you developed a protocol that I am yet unused to.
The most frightening things that are coming down the road to me are not AI or fake news. It's the inability to spot fake news due to lack of any critical thinking skills. But this brought to you by the public educational system that has people believing $140,000 facebook ads by content farmers in Montenegro stole an election. On top of which we are blaming that on a candidates loss, stopping any mandate after a president (like them or not) has endured the exact intolerance, big brother facist-state tactics that Dick Cheney and George Bush Sr were accused of. Rather than say there was some push back to how the national propaganda syndicate shovels this garbage and people finally put their foot down amazingly enough in a national election and those who sat on their thumbs during the last presidential administration now all of the sudden are outraged in international affairs? That, to me is horrifying.
THIS !!!
"the inability to spot fake news due to lack of any critical thinking skills"
Also, go to the past myth of "The Emperors' Apprentice" (Disney's Fantasia) - smart and intelligent humans are creating tools that no human has enough "wisdom" to properly supervise and put to use. As in, "Be Careful What You Ask For: You Just Might Get It."
Educationally, I am seeing a lack of desire to voice challenging opinions. I had a recent discussion about how public education is being privatized, not for higher principles, but for commercialism. We definitely need to respond early to these challenges.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts @cryptkeeper17. I appreciate it a lot.
I see those two things quite related. With advanced AI it will be simply much easier to create and spread fake news.
Can you imagine that right now AI could already create 'fake' video of your favourite influencer in which he would make some fake statements, which could affect your financial decisions.
Indeed it is horrifying. I hope I can spend my old days living in some remote 3rd world country, disconnected and off-line. Far from all upcoming mess.

Hi @cosmophobia,
Thank you for dropping by. I also dont use memo very often.

Thank you Piotr I am looking forward to your next post.
AI is a serious matter which we shouldn't take with levity. I think overtime, many countries will have central authorities to identify correct audios and videos, etc and laws will be passed to regulate AI if they appear too distruptive.
We will certainly need to endure AI. We moved away from a feudal system of governance to a new concept, voting with representation. Our current American system is running its course. Even the UN is being financially challenged. New systems of governance are not always progressive. Sometimes human error enables society to revert to an undesirable state. If corporations gain control of global militaries, it is anybody's guess what the future will hold. :) But a smile remains contagious.
Hmm I think I get your point, the point that the situation will lead to a social change. While I am persuaded to take your stand, the government will fight back to install a social order and maintain the status quo.
Absolutely. The government does not change without a fight.
hi @gandhibaba
Thanks for commenting and sharing your thoughts. I appreciate it a lot.
We're on the same page here. Definetly "the situation will lead to a social change". I just wonder how badly AI will change social life. Mobile devices and internet turned it upside down already in the past.
ps.
Can you imagine that right now AI could already create 'fake' video of your favourite influencer in which he would make some fake statements, which could affect your financial decisions.
I hope I can spend my old days living in some remote 3rd world country, disconnected and off-line. Far from all upcoming mess.

Piotr
This really got me laughing hard. There will be no escape for you cause, by then, globalization will have had a full swing and we all will be in the shit together. Hahahaha
I hope you're wrong @gandhibaba
Im luckily already half-disconnected. 3 years ago I got rid of my cellphone so right now Im only online once Im on my laptop. Very refreshing feeling to be able to disconnect yourself 100% from internet.
very funny hahahhaa :)
maybe this might turn out to be the case in the long run. the govt may tend to get into the process of AI once it bets it self off the chain
Dear @crypto.piotr I think technology is a double edged sword. The more advanced the technology the more powerful it gets at its ability to do good as well as bad.
After all it is not the sword that kills but the hand that wields it and the mind that guides it.
Having said that I see a silver lining to this dark cloud which is as follows.
Now let us assume that such technology becomes very common that anyone can create such fake content using AI
So what are our options?
For any media to be played out you need a player and a medium. To play a movie you need a movie player. To transmits messages you need medium like whatsapp or facebook or twitter.
So with such killer technology in place it would also be possible to creates software which can be implemented as addons, firewalls or anti- fake content identifier using advanced AI algorithms that filter all content and use high tech AI to not only block fake content or at least mark it as fake news. Not only that it would be able to use data analytic more efficiently and able to pin point the source of the fake news and give the perpetrators of such content little opportunity of shoot and scoot (The way hackers hack compromise a system inject a code and go away).
Channels like facebook and whatsapp can have such filters built into their servers.
I think the hand that holds the sword can also be used to protect and good AI would win over bad AI or the battle would go on for a long time. It may as well give rise to a new industry of specialist or developers who specialize in scanning and identifying the foot prints of fake content.
Something similar to what an anti- virus program does today and keep our computers mobiles and other devices secure.
Great discussion resteemed so it can reach out to more people :)
hi buddy
Thanks for replying and sharing your thoughts. I appreciate it a lot.
That's very true.
Im sure many fincial corporations will exploit AI to create even more fake financial news in order to control the market. That's what I afraid the most. Crypto community will be constant victim of those kind of abuses.
We have trouble realizing if written online news is real or fake. All mentioned by you solutions will only help small group of people. Most may end up being vulnerable. Dont you think?
Can you imagine that right now AI could already create 'fake' video of your favourite influencer in which he would make some fake statements, which could affect your financial decisions.
I hope I can spend my old days living in some remote 3rd world country, disconnected and off-line. Far from all upcoming mess.

The future beckons.
I believe that there are two themes that raise some strong concerns: on the one hand, there is the possibility of AI use as a tool for malicious intent and on the other hand, the possibility that the technology could someday reach the point of achieving sentience and set about to rid the world of human existence.
Let's take a look at the first concern. Worker replacement through automation, e.g. help desks, customer services, and a host of other business processes that week to eliminate personnel costs (wages, annual leave, sick leave, & pensions) and to elevate profits. Another concern is that of the weaponization of AI. In this scenario, AI systems can be unleash on targets, including a law abiding citizenry, by the power elite in order to exercise ultimate control. AI systems may not have systems in place that guard against the carrying out of unjust or immoral acts. If one considers, for example, the rapid development in robotics by companies such as Boston Dynamics and the advances made in nural networks and deep learning by Google and IBM, when combined into integrated systems and deployed in a wide scale, one can easily imagine the possibility of an Orwellian nightmare emerging.
The emergence of sentient systems.
Popular culture has a history of expressing concerns over AI run amuck. The earliest example that come to mind include films such as Colossus The Forbin
Project , Battlestar Galatica and The Terminator. Each film depicts a bleak future where humankind battles for its continued existence against one of its own creations. Indeed, one can perhaps easily ponder the question, if AI is able to achieve sentience, will it come to view humans as unnecessary or worse, considering of storied history, deserving of elimination?
Ethical considerations.
If AI becomes capable of simulate human characteristics to a fault, that is, it becomes virtually indistinguishable for that of a real human being, how will society deal with systems that are capable of displaying intellectual capacity and emotions? How will society be able to make the distinction human intelligence and consciousness and something that is synthetic? Or consider cybernetics where human cognitive capacity is enhanced by AI implants within the brain?
The technology appears to now be developing at pace. Will society be able to develop the means to face the the various challenges that are surely to come with its various implementations?
Thanks for your comment and sharing your thoughts @jaalig
I appreciate a lot.
Personally I believe that jobs related to customer service will be booming. Newest terminal at singapore airport is excellent example. Everything (including immigration and check in) is fully automated. And entire stuff is just walking around trying to help passengers. Even immigration officers were there to assist us istead of checking our passports.
This are all great questions and it's time to start looking for answers.
Big thx for taking the time to reply,

@crypto.piotr, I am also worried about AI advancement. Just like you said, not because they would destroy human race (Terminator) but what humans will do to their fellow humans using this advance tech. There is absolutely nothing we can do about it rather than to adapt to it. We have to find our place, plan our ways very well and try being real in doing things. You have to help people but you have to do it physically. I know some people will definitely suffered it. Especially those that are very far away from you and you would've love to help them. But you have to considered yourself. If you will be able to let go of whatever you will lost, you can go ahead. But do not involve in media transactions that will ruin your life.
AI is good and bad. Just as God regretted creating man after He commended his own works that all of his creation were good. God himself have to bear living with man. So we have to learn leaving with what ever Artificial Intelligence would bring.
Thanks for your comment and sharing your thoughts @focygray

I see we're pretty much on the same page. Fascinated and worried about this tech.

As long fake videos can be made, we can also find a way to recognized which is fake and which is real. But it is going to take some kind of high security and high coding to come up with such devices or apps that will distinguish between fake and real videos.
Hi @crypto.piotr
Yes this is worrisome and I agree with you but one thing you must never forget is the fact that normal civilians has been duped since the start of TelLieVision (TV). We are being duped no more today than the start of the 70's when NASA collected billions from unsuspected citizens to fool a space program. And I get it, it is hard to comprehend but lets say that is true and they went to the moon and all those billions (still being collected today) was not for nothing. You can use today's military complex in the same context. Attacks are being staged to motivate these wars from which specific individuals profit immensely.
The sooner we realize that we cannot trust shit we see on a screen the better. People should wake up because like you point out in this post, it is not as easy to spot the fakes anymore, but we should learn from history. Profit comes from lies and it will never stop.
One upside from this technology however is if you want to expose corrupt individuals you can do so anonymously and it's getting easier and easier.
This comment sounds extreme I know but one thing you must never forget, and it is something I think more important than what you show here, is how easily a human can be programmed. It is unbelievable easy as seen in the video below.
And the system we live in is self correcting. We demand discipline and rebellion against the system is not tolerated.
Yes the videos seems stupid if you have not done the research or ever thought about why so many people crucify you when you go against main stream narrative.
You don't need AI techniques to fool the masses. You only need to control what they see although I agree it will be a lot easier with this technology.
We live in a insane world my friend and the war of information is far grater than anyone may think.
Like your post, especially your formatting. If you are interested in the latest AI also check out Two Minute Papers. Some of his videos are great!
Didn't hear from you in a while @dpl. Thx for this amaying comment. I appreciate a lot.
I see we're pretty much on the same page. Fascinated and worried about this tech.
The problem is that in the past we were lied by goverments and it resulted with lack of trust towards goverment. Now we can be lied from every diffection. We may end up living in world of full-time distrust.

Hola crypto.piotr,
nice one!
Is that scarry, sure, but to be honest and look at "How good/truth are news right now. Even Newspapers in Germany they bring wrong News the whole time and then, they just change them or say sorry in the end.
I do not trade news, because of that reason: When you get them there old already.
See Trump as an Example - he is only using Twitter, nothing else - because he doesnt trust in that at all. (only one example)
The way to get good news and in time, Than use clients like Reuters, not cheap, but no fakes.
I would like to send my mum Birthdaywishes of Obama, that would be great !!!

Very interesting questions, my dear friend. I can see a time not long from now, when some consumers will prefer AI generated news content, comedy, etc. It may well be the same crowd that prefers click-bait, and so-called journalism content that is almost completely void of any merit and backed by zero research. People spend hours on YouTube watching only that - and still more hours on Instagram looking at people pulling faces at the camera. The IQ of some AI at this point, is likely several points above the majority of consumers in some platforms or perhaps in generally all platforms and communities.
What I think is AI doesn't necessarily pose any new threat to us. We have been changing for the worse for years with the burst of information and the voice it gives to people. The only way to mitigate against it all is by showing integrity, good manners and by producing work that we are truly proud of. I believe those types of people will ALWAYS outnumber the rest, though they may remain silent out of choice. It is a wise person who reads YouTube comment many threads and says nothing LOL. Do you agree? I have a go at the threads after a few drinks at night just for a spot of fun myself.
Thanks so very much for the gift and the alert. I appreciate it!

Most people would consider it a great thing if they could know the identity or otherwise of the content host, the creator and so on. I absolutely don't dispute that the creator behind or manipulator of any technology poses an actual threat. What I was trying to get at is that the bigger threat is one we already face today, namely the consumer of any information or technology. Thank you for your fine content and for your interaction, it is always great to be read your threads.

A lot of what I have to comment has already been done by other users.
I agree that fake news already exists a while ago. In the same way that today it is our responsibility to make some research to realize if a story is real or not, we should also verify the veracity of a video when we suspect.
Something I find very positive is what you're doing this whis post, and that'sto spread this new reality and to tell others what is happening. That this tool exists and may be able to confuse the most expert. Now that I know that this tool exists, in addition to checking the sources of the news, I will pay special attention to detect inconsistencies in the videos that may signal that it is a fake video.
Thanks to lot for sharing this !!
Hi @cripto.piotr I have read your interesting post. Well-written, very well-documented.
Nearly a hundred and thirty years ago, Charles Darwin published his initial work, "The Origin of the Species" and a dozen years later a second work, "The Descent of Man".
Today, Darwin's ideas along with the views of some of his predecessors and contemporaries form a significant part of the framework of the Theory of Evolution. The Theory essentially views man as a genetic accident--a product of chance in time and space.
Interestingly, we face a very similar situation in the scientific community today with the advent and maturing of the body of knowledge called artificial intelligence (AI).
There is currently an unprecedented interest in AI; researchers are making wonderful claims for this newfound technology while government agencies and business and industrial organizations are shelling out millions of dollars to acquire a piece of the action. Don't misunderstand, there are many, many potential benefits to be gained from AI; in medical diagnostics, in manufacturing, in mineral exploration, in communications, in space exploration--in practically every arena of human endeavor.
Both physicist Stephen Hawking and business magnate Elon Musk had publicly voiced the opinion that superhuman artificial intelligence could provide incalculable benefits, but could also end the human race if deployed incautiously. Hawking and Musk both sit on the scientific advisory board for the Future of Life Institute, an organization working to "mitigate existential risks facing humanity". The institute drafted an open letter directed to the broader AI research community, and circulated it to the attendees of its first conference in Puerto Rico during the first weekend of 2015.
Embedding Human Intelligence into a machine via machine learning languages, which enables the device to see, think, act & learn is termed as Artificial Intelligence. To clarify more on this, let’s see what Ben Thompson, Stratechery has proposed
“First, there are two types of artificial intelligence: Artificial General Intelligence (a.k.a. weak AI), that is, a computer capable of doing anything a human can. That is in contrast to Artificial Narrow Intelligence (a.k.a. strong AI), in which a computer does what a human can do, but only within narrow bounds. ”
What can be done to ensure that reason and truth prevail in the unfolding inquiry into the relationship between human intelligence and machine intelligence? How can we assure that our society and our world will be shaped by true truth and not speculation?.
Let the debate continue!....
Thank you for your kindness, dear
I wish you good health, happiness and prosperity.
Have a nice night
A big hug
What an amazing comment @euriguiwi2018
Thank you for sharing your thoughts :)
I feel flattered :) Thank you for your kind complement.
I like that you mentioned Darwin and his theories. The thing is that I strongly believe, that universe is huge enough and time is endless so it create perfect environment for such a "accidents".
For that reason I believe that humanity is not the only "accident" within time and space that is surrounding us. Does it even make sense?
Very well said.
Some people mentioned that we need to develop solutions that will allow us to distinguish fake audio/video from real one.

Thank you very much for all your comments. Of course @crypto.piotr I'm agreeing with you, that's a great business opportunity for those who can provide such a solutions.
You may have noticed that Facebook and other apps now recognize many of your friends’ faces in posted photos and prompt you to tag them with their names. An app running on your smartphone will recognize virtually any bird in the wild.
Machines have already beaten the finest (human) players of poker and Go, achievements that experts had predicted would take at least another decade. Google’s DeepMind team has used ML systems to improve the cooling efficiency at data centers by more than 15%, even after they were optimized by human experts. Intelligent agents are being used by the cybersecurity company Deep Instinct to detect malware, and by PayPal to prevent money laundering. A system using IBM technology automates the claims process at an insurance company in Singapore, and a system from Lumidatum, a data science platform firm, offers timely advice to improve customer support.
Also, dozens of companies are using ML to decide which trades to execute on Wall Street, and more and more credit decisions are made with its help. Amazon employs ML to optimize inventory and improve product recommendations to customers. Infinite Analytics developed one ML system to predict whether a user would click on a particular ad, improving online ad placement for a global consumer packaged goods company, and another to improve customers’ search and discovery process at a Brazilian online retailer. The first system increased advertising ROI threefold, and the second resulted in a $125 million increase in annual revenue.
Recently I read in a magazine that the biggest advances have been in two broad areas: perception and cognition. In the former category some of the most practical advances have been made in relation to speech. Voice recognition is still far from perfect, but millions of people are now using it, think Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant. The text you are now reading was originally dictated to a computer and transcribed with sufficient accuracy to make it faster than typing. A study by the Stanford computer scientist James Landay and colleagues found that speech recognition is now about three times as fast, on average, as typing on a cell phone. The error rate, once 8.5%, has dropped to 4.9%. What’s striking is that this substantial improvement has come not over the past 10 years but just since the summer of 2016.

Actually Piotr, those videos were easy for me to discern between the fake and the real videos.
I notice fine details to everything. I have always been very observant from my childhood to take notice of minor details. Most of the time I can also see a magician's sleight of hand in an illusion.
The first thing I noticed in the fake videos is that the movement of the mouth do NOT pronounce the words.
You can build up this skill if you talk to mute people. They too have the ability to read lips probably much better than I can and probably would have noticed that something was not right in the fake videos.
Thank you for this brilliant and amazing reply! :)

Hello @crypto.piotr,
I am a tad late on this one. It is indeed an issue that had to be aired somewhere. Look the fake news issue is real and has existed for some time now. Let's not go back to 1947:) but let's focus from a period where we felt digital economy had started to take roots.
One example is whatsapp. There are innumerable fake posts which appear on my cell every time and this is all manually sent by someone, we are not even talking automated, leave alone AI.
The root of the issue is our own habit of believing whatever we see as news to be true. The inquisitiveness or reason to check the news is absolutely numb because that is how we have been conditioned since childhood. Our parents, grand-parents watched the news and believed it and we followed suit.
Now, welcome to the 21st century and the era of AI. Frankly, I sell call-center solutions which utilize AI. The respondent is not a person but a bot and uses technology from Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. So, it is only a matter of time that AI will sound exactly like us.
The question now is not to test whether we will be able to differentiate fake from real, rather test if we can remain on the good side of any subject. Like the Obama example, if a leader is calling us to do something which tramples our conscience then we need to get into the habit of checking those kind of news to be true or not. This is a behavioral change and may take time but that is what is needed.
Lastly, I really can't refute the Cambridge Analytica case, as I am from the country which has been the guinea pigs for them. :)
But here's the thing, the future of AI is either the Terminators (like you said) or the intelligent space scanning interface, as in Star Trek. I personally feel we are headed more towards the Star Trek kind of AI future and hence, the future is indeed bright.
Hi @oivas

we all have aright to the truth :) and whoever abuse it sooner or later just be revealed and distrusted as simple as that. as for me - not really watching mass media or really following news. and yep old TV is for years stored on the top of the wardrobe as useless thing.
As always, your articles are interesting and thought provoking ~ My personal thoughts on this new type of "FAKE AI " is that in time a way will be found to stop this from happening, involving possible prosecution to those involved! As with any new technology, there are always advantages and disadvantages ~ Solutions will come in time! IMO
Something interesting I read about these fake videos created by AI and apparently the only way to currently identify a fake video is that the people in the video never blink. Apparently there is very little footage available of people with their eyes closed for the AI to use. Scary but true. The whole world of AI advancement has some very scary implications and uses.
hi @gholsa
Thank you for your comment. I appreciate it a lot.
Eventually that wont be very difficult to fix. Once AI creators will focus on it then they will surely find solution to that issue.
I agree. Absolutely.

Ok i will give my 2 cents as i see it. A.I at a time when the need to do less is becoming a common trait amongst the new gen of ppl. With a microwave it cooks quicker but how safe for children. My 3 year old grandson understands a microwave operation but cant count to 100. He can even call uber to pick him up if he gets a phone. AI world is what is to come. We dont even dial a number we ask google or siri to call so and so. One day we will wake up in the dark ages as no one will be able to do anything because the need to learn a certain skill set has been transferred to a bot. I only hope as do most that we never allow them to make a kill order decision. That must remain with human thought. AI must learn human emotions. We are born with it.
There are many instances as of now that AI has the ability to create propaganda through misinformation. These tactics where only need during war. So heres a bigger question. Are the MACHINES AT WAR WITH THE PEOPLE. Step back and look. As long as we fight to prove our differences AI prop bots will always when. We live in a world of the illusion of choice. Left right, up down, good bad,hot cold, these are not choices of free will but a design to give you the appearance of choice when they control both side.
This is thought provoking!
You'll have to follow me here, but your questions at the end of the article, "What kind of a world are we going to live in? A world full of misinformation where trust is hard to find?" - the fact that you may only have recently started to consider and ask these questions seems to be a strong indication that many have already been so hopelessly mislead by the mass media, for so long, and it has been done so decietfully well...
I think it means that a whole lot of people are already screwed.
History books (and other media) have been changed in so many ways, so many times, that it's increasingly difficult for anyone to actually "know" what they think it is they know. I have absolutely no doubts whatsoever that all of us are the victims of at least some misinformation put out by governments, intelligence agencies, media outlets, and even religion.
As far as the lady at the end goes, talking about how this new fake video technology is simply a "tool" that can be used for good or ill... Just take a look at Oppenheimer, who invented the nuclear bomb from medical experiments begun by the Curies' regarding medical X-Ray technology. Leave it to the goverment and big corporations to take any new technology they can get their hands on - and then develop it into a weapon that they can sell for a profit.
The problems with tools and technology are the same as they have always been, and that is the fact that humans have a long track record of making stupid choices. Take Artificial Intelligence: it certainly will have the ability to do many things better than humans can. And, some humans, at some point in the future, are going to make the stupid decision to give up too much control to reliance on an AI. In fact, a strong argument could have been made a long time ago that our methods are already overly reliant on technology.
The real question everyone needs to be asking themselves is this: What will you do when technology fails?
Call the IT guy and wait for him to fix it? Try to learn how to fix everything yourself? Go back to old ways of doing things? Theres a lot to be said for self-reliance - but there's so many complex things out there to know that most people can't know enough to save themselves. At that point, communities of skilled people will have to really work well, and work hard - together - to get the human race through perilous times.
This is amazing technology! It's petrifying before coming to understand that these altering elements can be detected. Imagine you're on a @DLive with a filter selection from the worlds most beautiful people to anyone that's uploaded the file of their person. I can imagine it can make for an interesting view at the future of our reality. I love artificial intelligence! I've had many conversations with chat bots and feel that the advancement of AI benefits the people. Imagine a clever espionage ring altering someones videos making damaging evidences that are purely propagated. The; "That's not what I said." moment. How could one be harmed by such altered videos is the petrifying part. The enlightening part is the reality that engineers would be able to decipher any such alterations. It would be interesting to offer a service where celebrities can pay to upload their avatar for third party live stream use on @DLIve. Thanks for sharing this article. I can be reached via message on @VaporApp.

This is well written and explained..... The video about fake and real obama is making me doubt everything we see this days, alot of memes of government officials which might never happened
That is a case study we should watch our for....... Personally I would fall for it..... A.I has dangerous disadvantages but the advantages to human race is also cool so we can just work with the disadvantages to the best way it suits us and not hurt each other feeling
Great post and very interesting.
I fully believe that a bot using AI could analyze and post articles on the top trending posts. Could I write that bot, no but it is certainly within the bounds of what is possible today.
In my opinion, once we see quantum computing tethered with blockchain technology, AI will really become something to fear.
If you are truly not able to distinguish an AI from a human, then it will have passed the Turing test. I would say that at that point, it doesn't matter, except that someone will own the AI and will be exploiting it for their own purposes. However, there is a reason why we call nagging salespeople "salesdroids": they are not actually very far from an AI that is owned by a company and doing its bidding.
hi @toddrjohnson
Thanks for commenting and sharing your thoughts. I appreciate it a lot.
I believe that currently many "untrained eyes will not be able to pass that test. We can hardly recognize fake written news. Video that looks real will be even more convincing.
Im sure many fincial corporations will exploit AI to create even more fake financial news in order to control the market. That's what I afraid the most. Crypto community will be constant victim of those kind of abuses.

The scary thing is that many people today already refuse to believe actual evidence and data. Now we have deep nets creating realistic scenes from 2d image (See Deep Mind's Neural Scene Representation and Rendering). Imagine how those who refuse to look at data and even deny it will be once our deep nets can just make up things that look absolutely real.
BTW, I appreciate all of your support.

Hi Piotr,
With recent AI technology - it's very possible and easy to create many fake videos and fake statements.
AI technology is undoubtedly a double-edged sword - human needs to decide, which side they want to use this advanced technology for...
Well, even 3rd world country is rapidly growing my friend, even though the speed is not too fast :)

conspiracies like bush did 9-11
very true and frightening
Blockchain is the solution.
We just neee a Proof of Real mechanism. Need to find some one to clear out the details ;)
On a more serious note, I know there are a number of projects aimed at data verification and source authenticity. This tech seems startling but it will be tamed with the advent of blockchain tech.
That's where I am, but you are really the first I have read that does not dance around the issue of the permanence and transparency offered by blockchains to serve as the feeding grounds for any AI humans develop.

I wasnt sure @hatu if you were serious in your previous post. I think blockchain will not be a solution here. It may actually help spread fake news (lack of censorship and since nothing in blockchain can be removed).

There is good and bad in everything. However, I just can't help but focus on the bad things this can bring. There are those who uses technology to their advantage and it does not matter if they destroy others in the process just for personal gain. It started with photos and now with videos which makes us more gullible. Because of the race of being first, news cannot be verified as long as it was reported first. Do the damage repair later. What we post online can be used against us. I don't know. Maybe I should go back to being a cave man. Oh, wait. I already am haha!
Great seeing your comment again @leeart :) Thanks for your never ending support.
I feel you. I think it's because those possible bad things are so scary that benefits coming from "good" seem not to be worth taking the risk. Dont you think?
That's partly why i decided not to run my own youtube channel. I dont want vidoes or my voice to be available online anywhere.
haahhaha. Share location of you cave with Wi-Fi. I will join you tomorrow! :)
Cheers,
Piotr
I limit my use of fb and other social media and as much as possible posting my face online. Sometimes I regret stuff I have posted online lol!
It is a one-man cave. No can do lol!
This is the way of the future. People cannot trust anything, they must make an informed decision based on what THEY know to be true. Don't buy anything until you are sure that you can trust the vendor. Don't believe what you see or hear until you know it is true. We can't be suckers. It is a revolution but we need to be able to read the writing on the wall or the same old bullshit will take us again. Blockchain is trustless. I haven't trusted the media since I knew what the media is. Same goes for politicians. You can't fool me with a fake President because all the presidents are already fake. Eyes open wide.
Great seeing your comment again @allcapsonezero :) Thanks for your never ending support.
That vision is so bloody scary. Sometimes I dream about being born 20-30 years earlier so I could live before all this technology boom that is happening.
Can you imagine that right now AI could already create 'fake' video of your favourite influencer in which he would make some fake statements, which could affect your financial decisions
That's what worries me more than 'fake presidents'.

It is the ultimate exercise in self reliance. We need to know in our hearts and our minds what we believe and go with that first.
I've been looking at the concept of deep fakes after I heard about it on Joe Rogans Podcast. It does have some merit in the film and live broadcasting areas. Imagine being a german or Japanse and being able to watch a hollywood blockbuster in your home language without subtitles and the mouths are perfectly in sync. It will really do wonders for the movie industry in reaching and attracting new auidences. As for live translations it could make a world of difference when foreign delegates meet and need to translate between one another in order to have discussions.
Having said that we've seen the dark side of deep fakes with fake celebrity porn doing the rounds with Natalie Portman being one of them. Now we moving into an image and copywrite infringement and there lies damages and like you said creating propaganda films.
In order to combat things like these since the tech will only get better we will need render bots that can deconstruct film and the lacing over it in real time that way if the bot pics it up it can tag the video and content as deep fakes and also provide a link to the original content used. Giving users oversite and clarity. I'd also like it if we could hold people accountable for the deep fakes they make since they could have far reaching implications if the wrong message is placed on the wrong face at the wrong time
Great seeing your comment again @chekohler
I've never heard about Joe Rogans Podcast. Will definetly check it out. Thx.
Dont you think that people will hate it as much as they hated dubbed movies?
Fuck. I never thought about it. So practically you will be able to replace face of porn actor with ... face of girl you know (maybe some fitness instructor who has her youtube channel so she is sharing enough data about herself to be processed by AI).
That's a great business opportunity for those who can provide such a solutions. Dont you think?

@crypto.piotr real nice...
Truth be told since the invention of the internet there has been lots of threat posed by it. Now AI, i really dont sound surprise about all this though because whatever has a positive side also has a negative side and in most cases the negative overshadows the positive.
This is indeed a very powerful tool.
Hi @ronarexx
Thank you for your comment. I appreciate it a lot.
True. AI has both positive and negative side.

Thanks for linking this to me and inviting me to speak here. This is truly a fascinating development in technology, though I'm not really sure what this is necessary for. However, if the information of the rise of such technology was to become mainstream, perhaps this would create EXTRA caution in what people believe.
Right now, people believe their own eyes and ears, but if one was told you can no longer believe what you're seeing and hearing, maybe there would be greater awareness to do your own research, from trustworthy and notable sources.
Just my 2 cents haha
Great seeing your comment again @cryptoeater. Im glad you've noticed my little invitation.
Thanks for your never ending support :)
This is one hell of a question. Isn't it? We humans cannot sit still for to long :)
That make sense. But how many people will be abused and lied before we all learn that AI can help to manipulate us and our decisions and we will learn how to protect ourselfs?
I hope I can spend my old days living in some remote 3rd world country, disconnected and off-line. Far from all upcoming mess.
Big thx for those 2 cents haha :)

In light of the way our world is structured, and the dangers of AI, I would like to be armed with my own independent AI. Sort of a guardian angel. AI war could be as effective as nuclear war. Power grids shut down, financial systems disrupted. If you aren't off the grid you could be in serious trouble. North Korea is already robbing some of the most secure banks. Governments will find some clever way to keep it out of the hands of the masses. It will be a way of disarming us. In the end someone will screw up and we will have a self aware system.
hi @crollo3
Thank you for your valuable comment.
Yep. People who will have enough resources to have their own AI will be having huge advantage and they may be able to protect themselfs. But would you be afraid that this AI will be collecting immense amount of information about you and sharing it with ... their creators maybe?
Another interesting point. I never thought about it.
Just checked your profile just to realize that we seem to share a number of interests :)
In particular that we both share a similar passion towards cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology :)
I will follow you closely :)
Take care, Piotr
