Yes, you read that title correctly. Coinbase plans on going public at some point in the near future.
In an interview on CNBC by the COO and President Asiff Hirji, he claimed that the most obvious path for Coinbase going forward would be for it to go public at some point.
His exact quote can be seen here:
"The most obvious path for Coinbase is for us to go public at some point."
adding...
"going public is certainly in the interest of our investors."
Of course it is!
It's the next easiest way to become super wealthy, I mean besides starting your own coin and launching an ICO.
Who is Asiff Hirji?
Asiff Hirji has only been the company's COO and President since December 1st and this was his first interview since taking the position.
Before Coinbase Hirji worked as the President and COO of TD Ameritrade.
How's that for experience?
It's currently difficult to estimate exactly how much Coinbase is worth, but most estimates put it somewhere north of $1.6 billion.
Though, it probably would sell for many multiples of that considering how much growth it has experienced as of late.
On more than one occasion Coinbase has added over 300k accounts in a single day.
Coinbase currently has more than 13 million users, which is a far cry from the less than 5 million users they had to start they year.
Coinbase will be adding support for more coins in the near future.
The first coin he plans to add is Steem!
Just kidding, he did not say which coins he would be adding, but it probably won't be steem, at least not any time soon.
It is not clear exactly what coins will be added, but Hirji went on to say that people could look at the types of coins they have currently and look at the types of coins that exist out there currently that aren't on the platform yet, and get an idea which ones might be good candidates for Coinbase to add.
Oh well, I'll keep crossing my fingers that one of the is steem at some point.
Maybe if we spam them with enough emails and phone calls to add steem it will get on their radar?
Stay informed my friends.

I love COin base honestly and this is all we were missing
Its sweet but expensive as fuck, 2% withdrawing 2% buying 2% selling...glad if anything is left ;)
So we could go with lower fees aswell since they racking it in now!
The best exchange is Binance! https://www.binance.com/?ref=10797328
Low fees and very quick to set up orders. Last but not least, any forks that may occur in your crypto they give you back the split tokens! No other exchange behaves so fair.. I would seriorusly recomend it.
yap
sounds good, but do they allow usd withdrawals direct to ze bank ?
coinbase collects wayy 2 much info no thanks
Coinbase is a really great exchange, my experience with them has been superb. It's not really surprising that they plan to go public someday, with the amount of growth they've been experiencing, they were already heading in that direction.... Thanks for sharing
Yeah I agree. Their fees are high but I pay them because I trust them and they are a well planned site, easy to use and a great history and reputation.
I would happily invest in Coinbase if they ICO'd their operation. They wont though I bet.
I imagine over time fees across the board will come down as more competition enters the space. Like in online stock brokerages.
Yes, fees are too high.
I use GDAX to alleviate some of the high fees, for Selling/Buying BTC, ETC, LTC from the coinbase dashboard. It is a bit less intuitive to use but can save you some $$$. Your Coinbase trusted accounts are still linked to GDAX.
Whenever I introduce someone to Crypto I always have to decide if I want to show them how to place limit orders or if I want to let them pay crazy fees. Usually I'll let them pay the fees the first time and when they come around wanting to buy more in a week or two I'll introduce them to the wonderful world of day trading.
they dont need our money :) or they probs with going public!
coinbase sux
i agary to you @gotgame and @jrcornel . coinbase is the best . and great exchange
I don't think the anon cryptos will ever be added to Coinbase, so Monero, Dash, Zcash probably stand no chance as far as I'm concerned. Too much regulatory risk with those assets.
Litecoin is already on there and I know that Brian Armstrong is a big-blocker, so that leaves Bitcoin Cash as one of the top candidates. I'll be really surprised if BCH isn't added.
The biggest problem with adding BCH is that it would be extremely confusing to new investors. The majority of Coinbase's users don't have crazy knowledge about the Crypto field - they just want a convenient way to throw money in. Giving someone like that the choice between Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash would be a huge headache.
That being said, I could totally see BCH coming to GDAX, since anyone day-trading Crypto should be much more knowledgeable about the difference.
If it happens imagine all the people who will transfer BTC to their BCH account and vice versa. What a headache for Coinbase. I guess they can name it BCash to make it more distinguishable.
Whichever coin gets added is definitely going up in price. Sounds like good new to me. However, I suggest using GDAX in lieu of Coinbase. It's the exchange portion of Coinbase and the costs are a fraction of Coinbase.
Definitely they will add many more coins as their business is skyrocketing and obviously they are a reliable gateway to enter this cryto world.
Coinbase support is the most worst one :(
Coinbase is one of the only ones to have phone support, although thankfully I haven't had to use it yet.
To be honest I am yet to find a crypto exchange with good support. They just all grew too fast, not enough help, yet.

Whatever coins are added will pop instantly.
Which is why we should push to get steem added.
i think new coin name is ripple....
Yeah it sounds like XRP will be one of their additions. Probably along with Dash and Bitcoin cash.
Apparently they said they would pay out BCH to all people who stored BTC in Coinbase at time of that fork. Dont know when but heard thats coming.
Coinbase was nice at first but they are really struggling to stay with all these new people joining. I haven't been verified in 2 weeks and my funds are stuck right now. Currently, I am using Bitstamp and I love it. Has ripple too.... which is BOOMING.
Bitcoin cash will be added for sure, I am not certain on the others. Though I did see others post that they got notifications saying dash, ripple, and monero would also be included.
This is good news... it has always seemed odd to me that the most widely used crypto wallet in coinbase has so few coin options. Sounds like it may alleviate the need for so many wallets and passwords, which I think would be a very positive thing.
Ripple is being added:
Go Google 'site:coinbase.com ripple'
The first item is a Coinbase support result titled
'Ripple - Coinbase | Support'.
The article linked does not contain the word ripple anywhere. But Google thinks it does: it's been tagged as such from the inside.
I'm sure they'll be updating it soon.
Wow! I nearly crapped my pants when I read this quote:
"The first coin he plans to add is Steem!
Just kidding, he did not say which coins he would be adding, but it probably won't be steem, at least not any time soon."
You got me! ;0)
Ha ha. You're likely right, I don't think they'll add Steem (right now).
I like the widespread attention tokens receive, but I don't want to many people climbing my money tree... But big ups to Coinbase for the movement though! 2018 is gonna be a big year.
I have a great deal of discussion with Coinbase because I'm a coinbase user
Ouu thats good news. Thanks for sharing

Maybe they can be one of the first large companies to go public through an ICO regulated by the SEC. That would add a lot of value tot he crypto world.
Nice Post I've benefited from your post a lot @jrcornel
@jrcornel Maybe that explains why they're taking so long to verify new accounts at the moment. I'm really getting impatient! Hope they resolve things quickly, I've already been waiting for more than 7 days for a response.
I had similar delays but I sent a support ticket and it went through. Mind you recently they've had something like a 100,000 new users per day. The app has been number 1 on IOS and Google Play, so its expected that there would annoying delays at this time.
Coinbase is a priority platform, its development is a matter of time, as we all understand, similar projects will grow and develop, thereby giving development assistance to the rest, thanks for the interesting information)
I would like them to start accepting more coins. They only accept LTC/BTC/ETH right now. Whenever I want to cash out any other alt-coin, I first have to convert it to one they accept. This can cause a significant drop when the spreads are sometimes 5% difference.
Dude. Get a TenX card and just spend your crypto. If you are in North america you can get their card early next year. If you are in EU, you can today.
No fees at all!
Thanks. I will look into it.
I'm just waiting for it to be available. Have they released any dates for North America yet?
This is like a new soap opera! My buddy was trying to transfer $40 of btc to Bittrex and coinbase was charging $17! That is insane. Just felt like sharing. Great post like always @jrcornel
Thats exactly what i thought. He has gdax, i learned him on it. Ive yet to finish my gdax, ive mainly been trading alts. Thanks for the info! Cheers
It seems like if they add another few coins, they'll have to do a major user interface update. Right now Coinbase still feels more like a bank account, like PayPal, than an exchange... at what point does that change?
How can you offer broad support for a lot of popular cryptocurrencies without becoming an exchange? Or are banks and exchanges the same thing in this context? I'm not sure.
Yes we want STEEM on Coinbase let's make it happen folks!
I wonder if CoinBase got so big so fast because it is rather simple to understand and use.
It doesn't try to be 'all things to all coins'.
I should down-vote you for playing with me like that! haha
Some believe you can predict what they will add by searching for a coins name under Coinbase's "support page". For example when you type in monero a tab saying "supported digital currencies" shows up. I thought this would hint towards the next coin they would add, but really all of the top 30 coins in terms of market cap have this tab appear.
@jrcornel What is the best or most optimal way of getting steem until then? I've got no btc. Thanks for the post.. who can we email to advert1se steem?
Going public is one of the strategic expansion plans or options for any profitable company. Coinbase cannot be an exception.
I don't understand the negativity against coinbase. Yes, there is a fee but I trust their service and it's super easy to use. As far as I understand the high fee is only on credit card transfers as well. You can also transfer coins to Gdax.
I'm kind of surprised that they wouldn't do an ICO!
It's amazing how a few months ago, nobody know what is coinbase , and become the most downloaded apps in Apple Store . I hope they bring in XRP, or even IOTA. Fingers crossed 🤞
Coinbase has done a fanastic job and smoothing the path for normal folk to get into Crypto but going forward using any centralised exchange is a worry. Regulation or a major hack is not a matter of IF but WHEN. I think a decentralised model such as Bitshares is the future !
wao que interesante de seguro que si agregaran varias monedas,, buenos si como dices tu crucemos los dedo por nuestro steem..
I guess that will be the first IPO for a crypto service related company
Cryptocurrency is on its way to going full on mainstream.
It really is better than the other bags I have tried and I use it and I did not find any problems in it thanks
I think to achieve further growth they definitely need more coins. Its a good starting base for something getting into cryptos but for anyone who wants to branch out its a little limiting.
i love coinbase wallet
I started using coinbase since October. Will be good to add more coins but recently been having problems with traffic. Hope they fix that first😎
More options would be excellent :)
I think going public and being more "Wall Street" is the wrong way to go. Remember, bitcoin and crypto came about from the last major financial crisis and the distrust that came from regular people towards banks. Why would any of us want crypto to head in that direction?
Most icos anyone can buy. IPOs are very hard to get into a lot of times because of the way the stocks are setup. The major trading companies get first crack and individuals have to hope for scraps. Lets not root for things to be like they were but rather cheer for decentalization and inclusion of anyone.
Regulations often serve to be quite useful. There is always a fine line though between doing too much and not enough in terms of regulations. Not regulating anything is not the right way to go either though...
