Yes, it is a mistake that comes from 18th century New York/ New Amsterdam. Where there were all kinds of nationalities that immigrated to the United States. The English, that bought New Amsterdam and changed the name to New York, heard the Nederish and Germans speak, thinking they were the same, as it turns out.
When asked, the Germans, what language they spoke, they replied "Deutsch", or what people are you: "Deutsch". English speaking people will have a tough time saying: "Deutsch", so that became: Dutch, and with that one of the biggest mistakes in history. Not many even seems to have bothered to ask a logical question like: "How come they are from Nederland and they are called Dutch, should their country not be called Dutchland then...?" And hey, turn out there a Dutchland, or Deutschland! B-)
Also the origin of the Dollar is Nederish from the New Amsterdam period: Daalder. Try to say that with an English tongue. And you might get how that could have become: Dollar. That is one for the holiday dinner conversation too. ;-)
