Well, that certainly paid off!
As many of you already know, I also run an alt-account called @little-peppers as an investment/saving account for my children. I started it up just over a year ago because I finally began to understand the amazing potential and future of cryptocurrency. If anyone would have been able to rewind the clock and grab just a few BTC for their children back in the day, they would have without hesitation. Obviously, most of us missed that boat, but we still have other opportunities.
THE STEEMIT OPPORTUNITY
The goal was simple, just have fun sharing and documenting family fun and activities and use the rewards as a savings for the future of the @little-peppers. So far, not only do they have about 0.7 BTC, but they also have almost 3000 SP, which is currently worth over $15,000 USD. Interestingly enough, that "$15,000" alone is an interesting amount.
The video above is a tour of our land. We purchased it for less than $10,000 USD. Technically, the @little-peppers could afford to purchase a property like this, just with what is in their steemit account.
Although we have not started building yet, the septic system has already been installed. Since that cost less than $5000 USD, the @little-peppers could afford to do this too! You'll also notice something in the background of the photo above.
Yeah, the shipping container, bundled together with the land and the septic system, would come out to around $15,000 USD total. Basically, everything that I've worked hard to accomplish in getting the land and the work done on it so far could be financially accomplished by my children.
Now I know that we have five children, and that their savings will one day be split up, but to end up with the amount of STEEM and BTC that they have has been a huge blessing. To be able to "mine" STEEM and BTC by sharing content and curating here on steemit has been an incredible experience anyway, and the rewards will bless our @little-peppers long into the future.
WHAT ABOUT YOU?
I thought that I would share this in a more tangible way to inspire others. To see that acres of land, a septic system, and a shipping container could all be purchased for the current account value of the @little-peppers account paints a different picture than just looking at some numbers on a page.
While I am not suggesting that everyone try to run alt-accounts to try to bless their children or others in their life, I do believe that it is wise to try to save up something for your children (or others) if you are able. If you are like most people here on steemit, you've got a whole life going on offline. You work, you sleep, you eat, and periodically you hope online to post, comment, and curate on steemit. Hopefully, you are able to meet your financial needs through other means and anything that your time on steemit may bring in is just an added bonus.
If you are in a position where you do not desperately need to cash out your steemit rewards, why not use them as a savings/investment for not only yourself, but for your loved ones? What if you simply held 10% of your earnings as an investment for your children? It may not seem like much now, but what if STEEM continues to rise? What if your child is young, and the account grows for years? Obviously, there is no guarantee or promise of anything, but we have an incredible opportunity, and I wanted to take this opportunity to try to inspire you to think of the potential, and to think of others. Too many parents only leave their children debt these days. Why not try to leave them a blessing instead, perhaps even while you are still alive so you can watch them enjoy it?

I am brand new to Steemit and blogging, but I am so glad I came across your posts. We homeschool our 4 kids and are working on our homestead too. We limit screentime but still want to give the kids an outlet to share their interests. I love the idea of having an alt-account that we could use as a school project. The possibilities are endless. They can learn about economics, investing, writing, publishing and just share whatever other topic that interests them. Thank you so much for sharing!

This is so inspiring @papa-pepper! I've been on the fence about starting an account for my kids and this definitely makes it clear I should wait no longer!
Although the terms of service require people to be at least 13 years prior to running their own account, I think that it s never too early to invest in their future in such a way.
I think it is a good idea for you to do that, it'll only become more of a blessing as time goes on!

It just makes "cents", right? :-) I've only been on here for a couple months (actually using it, that is....I joined in Aug) and it's amazing the amount of potential this platform truly holds. We are still in such early days. I mean, this is still the beta version, for crying out loud. I truly believe SteemIt will be one of the huge "winners" in the crypto world and someday could very well be a household name in homes across the entire world. Seriously, think about that. The entire world will have access to this thing and we're only getting started. Pretty crazy to think about.... Keep up the good work as always. Thank you!

I have been bribing my children and grandchildren so that they register on Steemit. The carrot was 1,000 SP.
I have succeeded: they have all registered. And some of them have started to blog.
Their accounts are worth at least CAD$14,000.

This is an excellent idea, first of all I love that you have a place to document and really memorialize your family. I love the idea that the blockchain will permanently record them forever. I have been capturing my girls lately and was thinking about this very thing.
Also planning for their future in the world where crypto reigns is wise. Steem is a winner, Steemit will thrive, its only just beginning, investing now seems like a no-brainer. I recently got my wife to join but she hasnt posted at all because she just doesnt see the value and potential like I do. Hopefully soon enough she does.

Investing for your children is a great idea and Steemit is probably one of the best ways to do it because it require little to no initial capital. I always enjoy reading your perspective on things @papa-pepper, I have never commented before but you are on of the most ibspirational people on Steemit. Keep it up man can't wait for the next one!
First off, thanks for commenting. It is a lot easier to "see" and "meet" someone when they leave a trail. I am glad that I've inspired you, and you are so correct about steemit being one of the best ways to do it. It is often so hard to get ahead in the world, but steemit can be our "leg up!"

Yes I do believe Steemit and crypto in general is going to change the way the world works in a lot of ways. I just wish there was more stability in some of the coins, I like the idea of a currency being decentralized but the threat of prrice manipulation is very real and kind of alarming.
I totally agree with you and well it would have been nice to have something saved up for me, but I suppose I can learn and make due with what i have while hopefully providing more for the future :)

wow, @papa-pepper, how thoughtful of you to do this for your kids, now you've paved a way for financial success for them. i don't have kids yet but i'm definitely saving for the future, who knows what tomorrow will bring.
@papa-pepper, your post makes allot of sense. I don't see anything at all preventing steem from getting to the value of 50-100 per SBD one day, and maybe that day is coming soon? The more that the bitcoin explodes, the more some of these alternative platforms that actually have value will as well. A tiny amount of steem today, could translate into a small fortune later down the road.
It certainly could exponentially increase in value. There is definitely no time like the present.
This is a great idea man, those @little-peppers are only going to have so much more USD in the future as steem rises. I was actually inspired by you and started a family account @beautifulfield that I was going to use for more of my family content and hoped my wife could take part, but I haven't done much with it yet.
Having it exist is the first step! I like being able to share "other things" from the alt account that I wouldn't necessarily share from this one, and the rewards have been, well, rewarding.

A friend opened an account for more than a year and never used it. It was at the time you got 50 Steem upon registration. Now the account is worth much more :-)

@papa-pepper, I love the idea of you saving for your children. That is a great thought and the best to give to ones children... I learnt from that and thinking of doing the same for my unborn children...
That's a great way to setup and teach your kids about the value of saving, investing, and planning for the future. Kudos for the idea. Perhaps I will start something similar for my kids as well.
Sounds good :) the sooner the better, it would be interesting for me to learn how you can teach that, how do you teach someone to think ahead and clearly, how do you teach someone to save without being stingy, invest without being greedy and plan without being scared of the future
I think the easiest way to teach it is to example it to them through you own processes. There is an old phrase that says "more is caught, then taught" meaning that watching and observing they are more likely to "catch" what you are exampling than to listen to the old man trying to "teach" them something :)
I had the same idea a few months ago. Set up both my kids with their own account. They are 5 and 9 so don't post yet but I'm using it as a placeholder until they are old enough to run their own accounts.
Also steemit is still in beta. But for how long? Right now account creation is free but will it always be this way?

I just opened an account for my daughter, not only as a savings tool, but as an educational tool as well. The earlier they learn how to navigate this future world of crypto, blockchain, and content creation the better.

It's a gift to our children to think farther out than ourselves, and even farther out than them. Our decisions have impact on generations to come.
