The House of the Noble Family in Choseon Dynasty 2

in #culture7 years ago

I guess it is better to show you concept structure of the Yeom Seon Jae to understand easily.

This is my drawing.

The first part I had posting is ‘Bon Chae’. Bon Chae means main building.

I’d like to post next parts, the ancestral shrine, ‘Ahn Chae’ where the lady of the house live. From ‘Bon Chae’, to the left part is the ancestral shrine and the right part is ‘Ahn Chae’
‘Ahn Chae’ means inside building

Here, let’s go the ancestral shrine first
There was a gate to the ancestral shrine.

The ancestral shrine was the most important part in Korean traditional Yang Ban house.
Every day they opened the ceremony.

That was core of korean confucian philosophy. The confucius in Choseon dynasty was not only a philosophy but also religion.

Ancestral shrine was consisted of the ceremony building and the building for the body.

Building for the body was called ‘Young Dang’
Young Dang means literally Shadow house.
They had kept the body several days before burying. They could colour the house, because ‘Young Dang’ was room for the dead.

You could enter into ‘Ahn Chae’ where the lady of the house live. There is a gate to the Ahn Chae

The lady of the house was managing all house work. She control all servants.

Usually she kept the keys of the storage. We korean husband usually need to give all salary to our wives. And korean husbands are receiving pin money from their wives. In my opinion, it is affected from our history.
Ahn Chae was women’s space. It was strictly prohibited for men to enter into the Ahn Chae.

Garden of Ahn Chae

Byeol Dang is special building for conceiving a baby. To have a baby is the most important thing in the family continuation and prosperity. So they tried to make the best conditions for a daughter in law.
Nobody could interrupt a daughter in law.

Thank you for reading.

I love the plan of Korean houses that incorporate private courtyards to bring nature into the interior. Perhaps this is why these houses seem so serenely peaceful and still.

The sketch of the house shows the relationship of living quarters to the whole of life. Again, the eternal dualities - Man, woman, birth, death and eternity. It's the human story in architecture.

The modern apartment buildings crowd around the house and peer over the walls, intruding upon its privacy. This is unfortunate, but as you often point out, a consequence of Korean life transitioning from the ancient ways to the modern era.

This house plans for everything - a time for joy (birth), a time for mourning (death) and a time to separate(the Ahn Chae) and a time to come together in the ancestral shrine and be mindful of the living and the dead.

The photos are stunning, @slowwalker and it was helpful that you provided a plan of the house and supplied a detailed explanation.

A delightful tour today of a lovely house and way of life.

Thank you so much
Your explanation is much better than mine.
I am learning much from you

we are learning from each other, my friend. I look forward to your posts each day. You have a gentle spirit, @slowwalker, and I have learned much about Korean culture in the time I've been following you.

@slowwalker Very interesting

Very interesting informations.
This place looks quiet in the middle of the nature.

The culture. Very nice. These sacred and spiritually surcharged cultures of the world are all disappearing. It is the sad state of affairs for the times we are living. Thank you for the tour.

@slowwalker

nice to meet you :)

Sad but inescapable phenomenon

I can not say that I understand their culture but this seems so calming

One of the most important thing in life is how to live peacefully.

i wounder why does it look Japanese to me ?

I was waiting impatiently for this post following the first part you sent earlier! Amazing culture indeed and the place is really very beautiful and seems peaceful!

She controlls everything.

Really interesting pics and very pleasant weather thanx for sharing @slowwalker

Damm look realy good but also sort of old :)

Wow! Thank you for the history lesson. I had never heard of a special building just for conceiving a baby.

The pictures are amazing as always!

I haven't seen you around my blog lately. It misses you lol.

lol
the most important matter, it was

Good map you make and i like photos buiding house

That's right, married Korean ladies should flourish and live happily thanks to their husband's salary hahaha.

We Korean husband usually need to give all salary to our wives. And Korean husbands are receiving pin money from their wives.

why not
But korean wives have full reponsibility in all family affairs.

No, I mean it. Nothing than respect women!

The Bon Chae pictures are great . You have actually explained the whole architecture in details. You even included a map showing the locations of this whole temple. Nice to see all this @slowwalker. Your travels are actually different, you seek peace rather than adventure. And that's what separates from the others . Wish you all the luck,

Thank you so much
I am aged
As you point out,it seems that I am traveling for tranquility rather than adventure

Thank you for sharing that informative post on the Korean household. Well written post with good clear photos :)

Nice post @slowwalker
Specially the part that u give ur wives all ur money lol😀

Good job👍🏻

Wow, this is so cool. :)) @slowwalker

Amazing piece of Nature. Very interesting and impressive way of presentation. Lovely <3

Thank you for this great history lesson. Seems to be such a peaceful and calming culture. Interesting how the wife is in charge of the money and all that deals with the household.

we just think business is matter of men, but managing house is the work for women.

Nice hand drawing lol. That was the best part of this post, adding a touch of humanity to your otherwise flawless posts.

thank you for your compliment

I really like the floor plan of the House of the Noble Family in Choseon Dynasty @slowwalker
Simple and easy to look at and understand.
So many aesthetically beautiful buildings.
I didn't know you had your own place to conceive your baby haha
Thank you for another really interesting post about Korea and the old traditions there

that was the noble family's case.

beautiful place!

Thanks for telling more about it enjoyed the whole blog post 1 and 2 about it This is great.

thank you so much

I'm really intrigued by this content. Here we have some ancient buildings of noble families, but they are very different from this. Maybe the most similar was the Roman Domus in the III century b.C., but they were just few similar and just in the plan. I love the concept of Byeol Dang. I have to say that another part of this house that is very interesting for me is the room for death, every country/cultures have different ceremonies about the death. Here in Italy, before Christianity, the rooms for death were full of colors thanks some paintings on the wall where there were happy scenes of the men before they dead, as a nice way to accompany the dead in his "travel". After Christianity, the only color that we associate to the dead is black.

Korean death room was effected from Buddhism.
It is interesting the room for death was coloured before christianity.

This is a painting inside a death etruscan room in Tarquinia (these death rooms was built from VII to II century bC) ^_^

Amazing photographs as always.
And cool handmade blueprint of the home. :)

great insightview of korean heritage

It is very interesting to see what I have never seen :)

Yeah amazing your content @slowwalker thanks for sharing

thank you for reading

wonderful pic 💖
i like it

very nice place to visit
i think that is traditional house of japan
it will become a pride if you want to follow me @zulfikarkamui
my vote is always on

The spiritual culture is so important and I think we often forget that in the US. I like the reverence shown to the daughter in law so that children may be brought into the world.

Wow! I knew nothing of all of this. It's pretty fascinating.

Thank you so much

Very nice photos. But one thing I'm wondering is, if this is a Korean traditional house, why does it have chinese characters on the door posts??? 😕

One choseon dynasty king made korean alphabet.
It is Hanguel.
Korea and Japan had used chinese characters for a long time

That makes sense. Thanks!
