How to win at curation rewards and lose at Steem

in #curation6 years ago (edited)

Tagged in a 'help me get better at curation' post, and received a few messages via today on improving rewards. Alright then, you asked for it...

Firstly, do not read the content, even if you are voting manually. If the post/comment is shit or one of the farming variety, it may cloud your judgement. This is not good for maximizing rewards. Remember, you are not here to give a toss about reward pool rape or the Trending page.

Vote spammy comments knowing bigger votes are coming

Example:

The 4 lesser voters know the $1.65 vote is coming, they don't care that it is on a comment that is a copy/paste.

Tip: If you plan to run a bot to vote these comments, check regularly as the account may be hit by steemcleaners.

Check in the wallets of Bid-bots

Especially those with millions of SP. Refresh the page every couple of minutes and vote the links that appear.

Alternately, go to steemitbottracker.com, open the 'Actions' then 'details' of a larger bot and find the links there.

In time, you will know who consistently blows up their posts (bartist) with bots and so you can beat the people doing the above.

Do not follow trails

Why? They only seek the best content on Steem. What's good for Steem, is bad for your wallet in this case.

Watch what others are doing

And people wonder why I no longer give people STEEM for topping the Curation League....

However!

There are a few ways though to continue to support the content you like and improve your Curation Rewards.

Per author:

Watch their steemworld.org votes following a new post - early is good, but not too early. Just try to be in front of the first vote that is around the same size as the one you want to issue.

Use this fancy page in tandem with the above to back-check a good time/weight for the author: https://beempy.com/curation/@abh12345/drugwars-now-on-steem

Find decent comments on the posts of authors who like to support their commentators / curators. Yep, you gotta read for this one, sorry.

Conclusion: The best curation rewards are mostly earned by supporting the authors and content that you should probably be flagging.

This post was brought to you by a grumpy abh12345 who should be starting work soon and earning some fiat to by crypto but is instead watching the likes of SBD do 50% in 10 mins last night.

Have an awesome day!

Sort:

Man, I had no idea. Those comment ones, astonishing. And not in a good way. FFS SMH FML ETC.

The amount of this abuse that is going on is pretty saddening. Steemcleaners have their work cut out!

They do. I read a post the other day in which there were people saying steemcleaners would have their delegation pulled and all sorts of nonsense. Absolutely not, man. It's the scale in which these people do things as well. Just ripping the piss

If it's pulled then stuff like this wont be stopped even if it is spotted. Not many people willing to give up their stake to down-vote. Using Steemit incs stake this way is a good use case imo.

Even though I agree that steemcleaners are doing a good job to prevent this sort of theft or whatever one might call it... And I would also say that we need them. However, I have problems understanding how they actually work, as they seem to be okay with some people doing crazy stuffs, meanwhile they flag others for doing the same thing.

One could argue that they just missed that particular abuse, but that doesn't feel right, as steemcleaners would have to be blind to miss certain abuse...

I understand. It seems that in the past, some people are untouchable?

No-ones perfect though, and they sure have a lot of work on their hands.

untouch.gif

Very true. No one is perfect, but I still find it odd to let some people slip under the radar so to speak. Especially when it comes to a service like this. They should treat everyone the same way. If one person is allowed to spam, everyone should be allowed to do it. Looks weird when they see between the fingers dozens of times for certain users.

I wholeheartedly agree, it's one of the best use cases

A good way to earn good curation rewards and vote on good content is to follow @ocd. When we start curating again by voting on the posts found by OCD acidyo always follows up with a big vote so you can reward good authors by putting in less work.

Yes, I have written about curation more positively in the past and did mention the large late vote (that isn't the master account) coming from the likes of utopian-io, acidyo as a much more respectable way to earn rewards. It will be good to have OCD back :)

Hi Asher if you want to earn curation you need to dodge the popular authors. The trap is the users that follow a $200 or $300 post. More can be made on posts with less rewards as they have fewer votes. You can still make decent rewards by curating properly, but it is not easy. Curation returns on your posts are normally not great lol, but that shouldn't be the aim. Engagement should be first and curation is the bonus.

Unpopular authors with good payouts are a good source. But you have to ask yourself, why are they unpopular? If it smells fishy, it's normally fishy, or something else, which I won't speak of :)

edit: ahh you've spotted that you can't earn much curation on my posts :) And this is with me not sticking a 50 cent vote on it at 8/9/10 mins. Sigh.

Very true, but also they could be just performing under the radar. I have no issues if it is a decent post and I know there is 100 Steem coming later. This will make up for the 20 votes that were average.

They could.... and they could also be a sock-puppet banging out multiple posts a day being voted by their chief delegator ;)

That would be the norm I agree. That is why it is best to dodge those as they don't really care if you are voting or not as they will never reply to a comment.

Lol. I knew people were voting strategically. I get masses of tiny trail votes on my posts, but I'd rather have more comments. I wonder how much some of them actually make. I vote entirely manually and don't care much about what I make from curation.

There's someone who retaliated for some @steemflagrewards action, but also votes on posts by members to earn something. Not that they have enough sp to make much.

If they do it 5000 times a week, they actually do pretty well, and for very little time invested.

There's someone who retaliated for some @steemflagrewards action, but also votes on posts by members to earn something.

You can't make it up sometimes can you :D

Yeah, I can attest to that. The guy mostly attacks SFR flaggers with close to dust level payout. Then, he snipes the bigger flaggers for rewards.

It's comical really.

Or, one can play a longer term game as I do and give up larger curation rewards by:

  • Curating everything you vote on and not autovoting.

  • Still vote on a post that is hours old and pretty much has most all the votes it is going to receive (like this one), because you support the author/message.

By doing this, you strengthen those you naturally interact with (not only the author, but those who came before you voting) and chances are good that sometimes those same people will be interested in your posts and their accounts being stronger as time progresses will allow for them to vote better on you.

And, sometimes one shouldn't think it is about the rewards maybe? There are a few I have kind of adopted who I am convinced will never reach minnow status, yet I like what they post. They enrich my world by posting what they post, and that is more valuable than the fact they will probably always be a dust vote. Who knows, maybe in a couple years I can single handedly make them minnows, lol.

It's an honorable approach to take, but you make a good point regarding that late vote appearing - it is certainly more noticeable than the raft that appear during the first 15 minutes, and could certainly work in your favour, along with a comment showing why the vote arrived. e.g. interest in the topic.

A Red Fish shared, is a Minnow in double time. See if you can get them noticed by c-squared or ocd, or curie :)

Good morning (here) "grumpy" @abh12345! 😉 Having a little time this morning and reading this for the first time, I appreciate you putting it together. I have bookmarked it in @steempeak, for future reference. As I have wondered about this from time to time, I think you have written the most informative Steem post I have ever read on the subject. So, a full upvote and resteem … 👍

The engineer in me enjoys the technical details on how to try and “wire” the curation rewards in Steem. But doing it in the “optimum” way overall for Steem to increase in value. The “real life” guy online for the first time ever and trying to balance the time to actively and consistently engage “in here” with “real world” responsibilities, though, simply doesn’t have the time (and not likely to in the foreseeable future) to be too concerned about it. I do the best I can, with the time I have to invest and let "the chips fall" where they may …

”… who should be starting work soon and earning some fiat to by crypto …”

I hope this all comes together for you sooner rather than later @abh12345, as I know it is a source of real concern and aggravation. All the best to you!

LoL

I knew I was doing it all wrong!

Earn that fiat dude, if there's another dip, you'll be happy you did

Trying my best! I had a role lined up but it's 'on hold' until who knows when. On the lookout for something else though.

And yep, fortunately there are enough people doing it 'wrong' to not make Steem a total farce :)

.

True :)

And yes I'm just grumpy, not so much to do with curation, or the lack of it 'for Steem' these days.

I have a home and a bed, this is a good start :)

The overall % of the curation reward doesn't change as far as I can tell.

The only time I have seen vote farmers earning less is when the sniper is the sole "other" voter in the scenario. Otherwise, the sniper just gets the bigger share of the 25% allocation and the author is more or less unaffected. Of course, these "authors" tend to be voting for themselves with more than one account anyhow.

.

Ah, such pure joy it is to read how maximizing your returns means curating trash.
For all the good things we say about Steem on the twitters, mediums, facebooks... theres just as much crap we can say..
(But lets not. hahaha)

Promote the good stuff on twitter, and occasionally bitch about the annoying stuff here has been my policy for a while :)

Guilty, I'm gonna admit that I've started with "Vote spammy comments knowing bigger votes are coming" this but until than I didn't get how curation worked. Because I didn't get any rewards.

As with the HF20 I got pretty pissed with the RC costs that I was able to comment 20 times a day or week I can't remember right now but it felt bad. So I decided to write a bot to curate. Now that bot returns like 2.5%/day so I would say not bad. I'm not upvoting shitty content but dsound posts because why not. And that was the easiest to write as a bot :)

Only option to earn from steem is either bidbots or whale friends so I don't think that's too bad to curate a project. Actually it's way better than delegating to a bidbot from my perspective.

So instead of the list above, I would suggest everyone to do the same especially those who delegate to bidbots.

I see your bot, glad it's working for you, and dsound is a pretty legit way to go.

Curating a project, or contributing to one will be the only way in the future, unless you have those whale buddies, which are becoming less and less.

So, this is what grumpy @abh12345 looks like? :) Way different than what Grumpy Grandpa looks like. Very informative (while not condoning) and very little to no blasting. :) I've been working on a post of my own on a somewhat similar but not exactly related topic (without success) that's far more stern with much more chewing out. :)

Isn't it interesting, though, that the things we're not necessarily for, ie, bidbot voting, is one of the best ways to track down higher curation rewards. In other words, they seem to feed one another. Hmmmm...

Not condoning but with a fair amount of tongue in cheek. You can blast and be stern, it wont change much and so it's better these days to make light and not days of work for yourself.

The Bots are mostly covered as far as rewards - the auto's / coders have worked out who uses them regularly and are on the posts like a shot. The link in the post is interesting, if you change the tale (my username and link) for something else, you'll likely find that the tiny votes in the first few mins earn the best % ROI-wise - Sometimes in the 1000s %.

Anyway, back to the now 9 hour post, that i haven't started writing up yet :D

Wow, I've been getting on almost two years here, and I don't know these tricks! Thank you Sir. Lol

I guess all is fair in love and steem :)

The extent some go to get that extra buck sometimes surprises the heck outta me!

Earn those fiats and buy up some more of that steem!

None of them? I bet you did :P

I shall be trying to earn some fiat to do just that!

Hi Asher. I have not been active as much on steemit (spending my quality time with my family!) but I come across such BS and abuse when I do come on. It is very depressing to see these type of actions being rewarded, so I do have to wonder why I even bother nowadays! Nothing much has changed in the year I've been here, and maybe nothing ever will. Hoping that is not the case.

I am sorry to hear about the job lineup. I hope they come back with a new update. In the meanwhile, take care of yourself out there in your new city.

Good! Glad to hear family is coming first and that this is quality time spent :)

I think this sort of stuff will continue forever, but it seems manageable, for now.

Really crappy about the job, I hope they ring tomorrow saying it's back on so i can demand 10% more and a relocation gift. It's more likely though that i'll be heading to the UK, boo!

Crossing my fingers for you! That is terrible that they wait for you to relocate and they couldn't tell you before you had left. Bad management. Bummer that had to happen.

Yes, family time is best. I do sneak in some Steem Monsters gameplay before bed though. It cuts into my sleep time which I usually pay for the next day, but sometimes I get too competitive when on a losing streak. :)

Booo! Go to New Zealand, they'll treat you right!

@abh12345 this is a great one to read .. resteeming :)
every time I am in thegoodwhale feed there are gems..another advantage of being a part of @acidyo effort. :)

Thanks!

I didn't think too much of this post, but it seems people are interested😊

Can I ask what thegoodwhale feed is? Is it code for acidyo? 😁

LOL. I should have been more clear @abh12345 when I place a bit in ocdb it may be many hours until my bid comes up. I go to the thegoodwhale.io website and click queue to see my place in line. Then I see the others bidders and wow.. really good posts for me check out just by clicking their name.

Ahh right!

I didn't know you could check your place in the queue, thanks for the tip and the resteem 😁

Ugh... I'm really on the fence about @creativecrypto and @sndbox. Some of their articles are so good, and they used to have some of the best community engagement around... but mostly they're just posting other people's work and self-voting the heck out of themselves. I think they might even be exceeding current Haejin levels.

It really raises the question about what do we do if companies jump on Steem, but a ton of coin and then just use it to upvote themselves. A Nike could wipe us out overnight.

I have noticed those authors and their votes, particularly the first, and it didn't look too pretty. And especially because it's a delegation.

The tokens would need to come from the exchange, and so i think i huge buy in, especially from someone like Nike would make for some interesting price action :)

Oh, 100% companies buying Steem would increase the price for us all... initially... but if you didn't sell straight away, you'd have SP on a platform that you can't access the reward pool on... which, I'm sure, would make it worthless. Basically, if lots of companies did the exact same as this media company, we'd have to move to another blockchain.

I think I am doing it all wrong. Sometimes I wish i was in this for the money and didn't act in the way Steem was advertised.

Yeah, you can still do OK, but nothing like the number of rewards you can make by turning a blind eye.

I was wondering how that rose+numbers account was achieving those curation rewards. I should have realised! Hope the work situation gets sorted out soon.

I was suspicious but hadn't bothered looking at that particular case, especially as these days I don't reward the top scorers (with more STEEM to sneak more CRs through actions like those.

I did just fine all this time but my biggest problem is not about umderstanding the strategy😢😢😢 my bad habit on upvoting any posts I like till my VP drained under 60😢😢😢

Up-vote whatever you like, when you like - This is good curation, well done!

You gave up on telling me the right thing to do 😯 Should I stay away from Steemit for 2 days😦 but I have a foodfightfriday 😭😭😭😭

Love the ending to this wonderful post. Lololol

haha :) Well I was, and still am, stuck on a data grind post, but I'm not giving up!

Thanks for the tips you gave me. I think I finally get it now.
It's good to have someone that reminds me about the ethics every once in a while, lol.
I removed some of my autovotes, and I'm trying to curate a lot more manually - I've also been upvoting a lot more comments after one of your last pie-posts. However, my mood these last couple of weeks is like the weather over here, and often it's hard to find the energy. But I shouldn't complain... at least I have the luxury of not having to go out and find a job for another 3 months.

You can thank me if/when you start to see some results :)

I'm not sure if I can go 3 more months without work, but we might well find out. I might have to double up on Posts, 3/4$ is a lot at present!

Is it really that hard to find a job over there, or are you picky? ;0)

Very hard at the moment out of tourist season. Maybe some bar work in a month or two :)

I keep forgetting you're in an area where tourism is the motor of the economy... Must be a hectic place during high-season, but very peaceful and quiet off-season... and indeed not very easy to find a job when it's quiet

I don't understand this stuff. have to get someone to explain it in a better form. right now I am way too tired to grasp anything.

What do you mean better? Better than my pigeon English? :D

Rest well chap, a long road ahead.

I don’t see how they can get 5-7 S steem per 1000 SP. or anywhere close to that.

To me its all insider actions to manipulate the system.
I don’t understand because I could not do it, not that I would. But when I see large returns I know something is up. I just can’t enter the conversation to discuss it. That is my issue and why I want to know.

There is certain content, mainly comments, that it is possible to vote at around 5/10 minutes, maybe longer, which will end up being worth 2-10$ on payout. The rewards for the first curators in here can be 1000%+.

The thing is, these comments are normally shady, and require a bit of programming to hit as they appear.

People will do anything for a dollar.

I like the people in my circle. Its a long term relationship I beleive.

Well have to cut this short my Hospice Nurse is here. Sry

All these guys who are exploiting the rewards by not curating true quality content. Maybe we'll have a dapp someday to help rate everyone in term of how shady their upvote habits are. Sometimes shady, kinda shady, super shady, pure evil.

I am happy to have groups that actively seek to rebalance the imbalance. It gets scary when the biggest exploiters become more powerful in counter-retaliation efforts.

My hope is to have more leaders who can rally people by saying things like "If X percent of users delegate X percent of their SP, I can effectively improve reward pool distribution by Y so W percent less goes to ultra shady folks, and Z percent more rewards goes out to less shady folks."

Maybe we'll have a dapp someday to help rate everyone in term of how shady their upvote habits are.

Give it a few years. An Oracle / Manual curation token type deal will appear. Years of voting habits will be assessed, and the folks that never gave posting authority to any voting services, or never showed any consistent vote times, will be part of a manual curation group. There wont be many people there, but those that are there will look pretty cool :)

I think this post relates to your final point: https://steemit.com/steemit/@tarazkp/helsing-governance-ideas-good-bad-whales-needed

@abh12345, Some helpful and guiding thoughts are flowing here for sure. And in my opinion effective results always hides in Basics and when we know how to perform basics right then we will get effective results. Stay blessed.

Posted using Partiko Android

I'm still getting to grips with the basics and so will let you know when I have them covered, thanks!

Welcome and enjoy your Steem Time brother.

Great post - I've said it before but I actually really want to try automated voting for a month or so to see where I can get my curation rewards :-) Will bookmark this for future reference!

Up to you, in the future there could be some good rewards available for those that never auto-voted, or not, but it's an interesting thought. See reply to 'creativetruth' :)

Those comments are getting more $ then I am on an actual post... That's the problem with this blockchain, but also the solution, there are no rules in here, we do what we want, and we upvote and flag what we want, we as a community have the power to reward or ban any type of content, we just need a bigger consensus of opinions, If these flag wars actually stopped and all those flags went to spammers and abusers it would be much better...

Later today I'm going to research steemflagrewards and steemcleaners. Now that I am at 500SP I feel the need to start delegating some SP to good projects that help the proof-of-brain of the blockchain.

Well the flag wars are on hold for now I think, and Steemcleaners should be on that account soon enough.

I would suggest to wait a bit longer before you start gifting to projects, but steemflagrewards is a good place if you fancy being rewarded for bringing out the hammer. They have a discord with a list of targets updated daily, I can find it if you want?

Already got the discord, was able to find it, thanks anyway :D I'm going to wait a bit longer until I delegate, still need to grow my account a bit more

I guess it’s about time I changed my ways.. I’m clearly failing.. Scams win here right?

Now I just have to figure out how to set up autovotes 🤔

Scam wins the most yes. Auto-voting authors of content you generally appreciate, like c-cubed, at a good time, is less scammy and will boost your rewards through doing something you are going to do anyway.

Yep, good point

Upvoted this. Is this a shitty post ...or am I a bad curator?

Looks like I voted too late, can you bid bot the shit out of this post please. 😂

heh :)

I might swerve an ocdb vote on this one, it's not my best work, sorry!

Thanks! All those tips could give me a head start!

lol, welcome :P

My dad will make sure that you are on my autovote list 😁

Can I be on your dads autovote list too? (I hope he is called @freedom) :D

Yes and no!

A reasonable result :D

Probably thinking i could make use of this strategy

Sad but true :/Curation rewards promote following rich, bad actors.

Learned something interesting👍

truth be told. 😛

One should be as sneaky as possible to earn the best curation rewards.

Sneaky with coding skill, to exploit gaps in code :D
