Daily Chicken May 26

Fluffer and Turkey.

These two are constantly leaving the forest to explore the lawn together. They're a pair and so are Red and Stinky Goldy.

Red and SG actually left the yard and snuck out the back fence earlier. Constantly doing inventory, lemme tell ya.

Four gold ones ☑️

Two gray ones ☑️

A black one ☑️

And one in the bucket still broody after like four months ☑️ They keep me entertained.

Be fruitful.
Stay relevant.

love seeing this. Chickens are cool. I've been learning about the health benefits of eggs lately. I mean the really good kind not the average ones we find in the store here in the USA

I'm here to tell you, they're worth it. We're a year into the chicken adventure almost, and I couldn't live without the eggs. I eat them daily.

I eat 4 per day and I buy pasture raised organic. They are about $2 more per dozen here. I notice that the yolks are very bright orange as opposed to the dull yellow of the mass produced cheap eggs. I am a little worried about cholesterol but I eat a lot of foods that are supposed to lower cholesterol

Garlic and broccoli are supposed to be real good at regulating cholesterol, but fear not! Dietary cholesterol has little to do with blood cholesterol. What affects blood cholesterol the most are refined carbs. :)

I usually eat about 4 of our home eggs a day, but have been known to woof a dozen on a few extreme occasions.

that's good to know. I have been eating avocado and chia seeds with my eggs so that has a lowering effect.

That sounds yum! I love avocados with my eggs too.

If you eat four a day, you'll probably want about six chickens. Most folks go with one of those cute chicken coop/run things from Tractor Supply, and they run about $200. You can probably make one yourself for cheaper if you're handy or pick up a used one of Facebook marketplace or Craigslist.

The chickens are the cheap part, at $3-5 a pop for babies. That many can be kept in a Rubbermaid tote for a brooder for a while, and you'll need a heat lamp, feeder, waterer, and bedding for them. That bit should be around another $100. Feed all depends on what quality of feed you want them to eat. Mine eat non GMO, soy free feed that I get for $25 per 50 pound bag. I get a bag every two weeks about. The cheapest feed at our feed store is about half that cost though.

Beware: chickens are the most addictive substance known to man. You'll get hooked.

I haven't caught the silkie/frizzle bug yet lol

Do they lay eggs pretty regular?

Oh yeah my silky chicken was my best lawyer but they get super super broody you have to throw them out the henhouse and lock the door sometimes to make him eat but they keep laying eggs I just like to sit on them constantly even after they have a full clutch

Chickens are so entertaining. There is something about there mannerisms that draw me in. Very creative names you gave them too!
