Something happened to him a long time ago which is still affecting the way he interacts with the world around him. Things like bullying are a side-effect of these unresolved issues, which originated from somewhere outside of him. So, it is better to forgive him in the knowledge that it is not his fault and focus on all the wonderful aspects of his character :)
I know it's not easy to do this in the heat of the moment. I am as guilty as anyone for responding with anger to insults. But practice make perfect. And I am genuinely grateful for all that our arguments have taught me about myself.
I try to appologize even when I do not believe I have done something wrong, because I understand now that it is not about being right or wrong. It is all about holding our higher vibration of love, gratitude and joy.
