How Free Are We Really?

And does it really matter, @karensuestudios and I pondered as we were enjoying our visit of Quebec City, one of oldest European settlements in North America and the only North American fortified city north of Mexico whose walls still exist?

"French explorer Jacques Cartier built a fort at the site in 1535, where he stayed for the winter before going back to France in spring 1536. He came back in 1541 with the goal of building a permanent settlement. This first settlement was abandoned less than one year after its foundation, in summer 1542, due in large part to the hostility of the natives combined with the harsh living conditions during winter."

"Quebec was founded by Samuel de Champlain, a French explorer and diplomat, on 3 July 1608, and at the site of a long abandoned St. Lawrence Iroquoian settlement called Stadacona. Champlain, also called "The Father of New France", served as its administrator for the rest of his life."

"The name "Canada" refers to this settlement. Although the Acadian settlement at Port-Royal was established three years earlier, Quebec came to be known as the cradle of the Francophone population of North America. The place seemed favorable to the establishment of a permanent colony."

"In 1665, there were 550 people in 70 houses living in the city. One-quarter of the people were members of religious orders: secular priests, Jesuits, Ursulines nuns and the order running the local hospital, Hotel-Dieu."

"Quebec City was the headquarters of many raids against New England during the four French and Indian Wars. In the last war, the French and Indian War (Seven Years' War), Quebec City was captured by the British in 1759 and held until the end of the war in 1763. It was the site of three battles during Seven Years' War - the Battle of Beauport, a French victory (31 July 1759); the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, in which British troops under General James Wolfe defeated the French General Louis-Joseph de Montcalm on 13 September 1759 and shortly thereafter took the city; and the final Battle of Sainte-Foy, a French victory (28 April 1760). France ceded New France, including the city, to Britain in 1763."[1]

Putting An End To All Wars Is A Never-Ending Battle!

Everyone has incentives to put an end to all wars, all act of aggression, but nobody ever succeeded yet.

"In the practical art of war, the best thing of all is to take the enemy’s country whole and intact; to shatter and destroy it is not so good. So, too, it is better to recapture an army entire than to destroy it." [2]

Government without taxes, run on a blockchain. (published April 2018)

Wars or merciless competition inevitably leads to what President Wilson's quote describes or what some people refer to as the hidden hand or the network.

"Since I entered politics, I have chiefly had men's views confided to me privately. Some of the biggest men in the United States, in the field of commerce and manufacture, are afraid of something. They know that there is a power somewhere so organized, so subtle, so watchful, so interlocked, so complete, so pervasive, that they better not speak above their breath when they speak in condemnation of it." US President Woodrow Wilson (1913)

Walking In The Old City

For @karensuestudios and I, war and freedom weren't much on our mind that day besides for passing thought, yet freedom is the very foundation from what everything good and pleasurable stem from.

Greetings, sweet and beautiful Karem

This question is very complex. There are as many, many ways to both leave someone free and hold them. One of the issues that makes a person stuck is to erroneously practice money management. For example, a person earns a salary of $ 15,000. That in my opinion is very high. But out of these 15,000, she uses the whole money for the monthly payment of her expenses.

On the other hand, a person earns $ 6,000. Of these 6000, every month she saves 2000 and invests that money saved. After a few years (2 decades of work, for example) this person who invested 2000 every month with a lot of discipline is with a great patrimony. With this patrimony, she has passive income (income without work) to pay her monthly expenses and still remains, as the person who earns 15,000 reais is still stuck to work. That is, one is already "retired" and the other will have to work forever to pay their higher expenses, since their financial management is worse.

This is only one side related to the person being free or not. I could put more, but the text will be too big.

What do you think of my idea, Karem ????

Thank you and good morning !!!

I'm french and now watching the video you posted, thank you very much.

(Ca change d'avoir ce genre d'avis depuis le canada que je connais assez peu au final)

Are there alot of museums there?

Government without taxes sound good. I mean, if that will happen then people will have more control of their "own" money. That's the way it's supposed to be right?

Many say that the only freedom you have is freedom of mind, but I do not agree with it. Our mind is just the problem. Is our mind good for us? I do not think so. Just think how negative you often think about yourself, which fictional problems our mind presents to us, always in the past or in the future. It is important to understand that we ourselves are not equal with our mind. That is why the only freedom you have is living in the now. The mind can not compete with that. Live intensely in the now, then all problems will disappear automatically.

There is no such thing as freedom.

But there is freedom in the mind and soul. Simply, that previous sentence of mine covers the freedom of the consciousness in which when one is more mindful of one's thoughts and actions then there is freedom of sort in this universe, a freedom that may be boundless, as how freedom should be. I came to this thought as I scan through the concept of freedom on one of my meditations. Hope this was of creative help. Thank you.

They always talk about freedom, being free like the birds in the sky. Freedom of speech, movement. They even promised free education, free healthcare, free accommodation. Free everything

But the image at the back of their head is some stupid people in chains right after the election, the truth is we are not actually free. We suffer in our mother lands and all we do is complain and get deceived again and again

I feel like freedom has been mostly an illusion of it than a real thing as such. However I would like to recall something from George Owen's 1984, where one of the characters tallked about the fact no matter how oppressed we really are from our governments and how little we can do from that oppression, our minds will be a place for us to do anything, to imagine anything we want... until we lose our humanity.

Having values, loving, caring, feeling, reasoning, are all attributes of a human, and as long as we carry them with us, we will always be, in a way, free.

However, that's not a reason enough to let others control our actions.

Freedom is life, but unfortunately sometimes its very hard to gain. Before now i use to think Quebec is an English name but now i know that it was founded by a french man. Thank you @teamsteem for this beautiful insight...

We're absolutely not free in the USA. Having said that in could be worse. Thanks for sharing the awesome video! Looks so European ( and cold). :)

@soulsistashakti Yeah I hear that more often from Americans yet as a European I feel you have way more freedom there than here. I don't know if you know a lot of europeans, yet it would be awesome if you could share a bit about how you feel it compares to Europe. Or just in general explain why it is you do not feel free. What is it that makes you feel restricted if it were I would be happy to know!

This country is controlled by corporate interests and white supremists. While, in theory, every human being in this country has liberty it is an uphill battle if you're not white, male and come from money. Having said that, it is not impossible - if the people that don't want you to succeed don't rape you or kill you first. Or put you in jail.

@soulsistashakti I already calculated it myself, but it is hard to guess, and this is what really upsets and confuses me: only 9% of the world population is caucasian. So why do white supremacists think that 'white is how it is supposed to be'. That makes no freaking sense at all. I've heard within a couple of years there will be more African American and hispanic people in the states than caucasian, to be honest I cannot wait for that.

Me too! I am half Dominican. How we handle this with grace is how we will move forward.

:)

True freedom is inseperable from responsibility.

Want freedom in your own mind? First accept that only you have sovereignty over the thoughts and feelings that arise there.

Want freedom from taxes and arbitrary rules? Know that you are ultimately responsible for protecting yourself from danger, taking care of yourself, and leading yourself in a direction of sustainable growth and well-being.

As soon as you let go of responsibility for the thoughts and the actions that led you to where you are now, you are no longer free. If your current reality is someone else's fault, then they have sovereignty over you.

That's the simple part.

As a free human, your reality also includes other humans. Their presence lets you have and accomplish much more than you could alone. More freedom, and more responsibility. Now, you'll want to consider how your actions affect others, and how this ripples back to affect you.

You can't have sovereignty over others, though you might try. They may even try to give it to you. Responsibility can be exhausting. A thinker I like to follow named Charlie Gilkey talks about "freedom from" vs "freedom to". He is probably not the first to say it, just the first place I heard it.

I kind of made this into a mini - post, beneath yours. Hope you don't mind. Good brain - food to start off my morning, thanks @teamsteem and @karensuestudios!

I am Vietnamese, I am watching your video and admire. I like it very much

The concluding part of my first comment

"In the practical art of war, the best thing of all is to take the enemy’s country whole and intact; to shatter and destroy it is not so good. So, too, it is better to recapture an army entire than to destroy it." Sun Tzu (The Art Of War)

This is very true, we are at war with those whose got all to take to win the war. But we’d never give up until we attain the real freedom of the feigned one we’ve got .
They take us at our weakest points, deceiving us with things that are needed to the heart . Enslave us like a dog pulling chariot chasing a a pound of flesh attached to the Chariot it’s pulling . What a pity
By the way

Have fun on your visit @teamsteem and @karensuestudio

Life is dear, love is dearer. Both can be given up for freedom.

Every human has four endowments - self awareness, conscience, independent will and creative imagination. These give us the ultimate human freedom... The power to choose, to respond, to change.Freedom is the open window through which pours the sunlight of the human spirit and human dignity.

Quebec city is awesome

Good afternoon @teamsteem.

How free are we really? This is a question I'm going to ponder on, and analyze to find out the truth.

My lecturer always told us, that before we draw any conclusions we should find out if it's true or if it's the truth. A question I'm still open to people's idea on the meaning.

But the government says we have freedom of speech, and a whole lot of other freedoms, but deep down there is a limit to your freedom.

This is me saying a big thank you to the Upvote I did receive on that comment, keep being amazing and inspirational. There's just too much to learn from Dan and we're blessed having such a human in our time.

You are right this is very true:

Putting An End To All Wars Is A Never-Ending Battle!
Everyone has incentives to put an end to all wars, all act of aggression, but nobody ever succeeded yet.

I think what we can do is just to make a wish, a wish that if ever will be granted, a lot of innocent people especially small children will be freed from the evil effects of war.

@teamsteem guys should visit Légende restaurant

Quebec city is good for studying and you can follow your dreams there.
good luck @teamsteem.

I don't think there is a 100% freedom in a society. A 100% freedom means a human being can do anything even the extremely bad things to other people. In a society, there should be "restrains" on certain aspects, such as "not inflicting damage/harm" to other people. Thus, with restrains, there is no 100% freedom. A 100% freedom could only be achieved if a human being is placed in solitude, isolated from other human beings.

This novel predates Wilsons statement by a few years.

We are completely free, that fact alone is enough to scare most into servitude; too much power.

@teamsteem we are never free in life even if we have all that it takes to be free, the simple reason is because we don't own our life. As human if you are free from one you cannot be free from another thing.

Freedom from the shackles of oppression, by the oppressors (Government, organizations etc) must always come with a price either in kind or otherwise. WE MUST BE FREE, but when and how?

Winner AND ONLY participant .... woah .

Id follow you up big time. I'd try to at least 😂😂

muy bueno tu articulo

You have a good blog, I followed you. I hope that you follow me, let's develop Steemit together and develop even…

Freedom is a state of mind. We are trapped in some sort of bondage or another.

true thanks

Sawaddee ka, @teamsteem. I enjoyed watching your video very much, your city looks so beautiful! So many interesting things there. ;)

I don't understand currency near as much as I'd like to, so thank you for providing some additional resources. I'll be sure to check them out. I really liked the street performer's music, it was very mystical to say the least c:
