Have you ever felt like your portrait sketches look kinda weird before adding in the details?
They always look sort of creepy and alien like to me but I’m into it. I’m stubborn enough to work at the same image until it starts looking the way I want it to. I’m still practicing everyday to get better because I’m not where I want to be with head shapes and drawing images that are facing forward.
My main goal for competing this face is to use it as a blank canvas for coloring and character design. I find myself devoting hours to painting skin, playing around with makeup ideas and hair. I’ll be sure to devote my next post to several different looks I can accomplish using this face.
As always, my sketches are drawn on the iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil using the Procreate App.
I started off using the hemp brush tool that’s listed under the organic brush tools.
For those of you who are familiar with how I draw and have watched some of my time lapse drawings, you’ve probably noticed that I usually start my drawings with an eye or an eyebrow. It’s bizarre for me to sketch out a rough head shape but again, I’m trying to master something that I’m not strong at.
I then went in with a second layer to add further details with my pencil p4 brush which was downloaded from the Procreate forum.
I pinched the screen on my iPad to zoom in and started to softly pencil in detailed facial features in the eyes, nose and lips. I drew in the brows like I normally would too. I wanted to get the facial features to a point where I was happy then I could select everything and center it on the head.
The last thing I did was liquify. It’s my new favorite tool from the latest update for Procreate. This head shape went from being super blocky to having more curves.
yeah! exactly they look weird , but sometimes i love the pure drawing before adding details too , in some case they look nicer <3
I agree with you! I love how clean it looks and I’m always questioning if I lprefer the colored version versus the pencils.
My whole art process is "this looks wierd" until the veeeerrry end.
Haha! Sometimes I try to tell myself that I’m trying to making it look weird!
I like, foxie ! Very nicely put together, and the step by step is well presented... I dont really see weirdness anymore in most arts these days even when they aren't really 'completed' yet. For some reasons, some 'weirdness' sometimes look really 'right' for that particular stage of drawing... haha
Thank you. :) Your step by step process is still my favorite Spidey! The process of drawing reminds me of makeup application. It doesn’t start looking good until you finish the eyes.
It would be great if you could post a process of how that same face could be many, that explains that there are no limits to the imagination, great!
Yep! I’m working on that now! :)
I'll be aware of that process, that's great seriously hahaha
Everything looks weird if you stare at it for long enough. Even photos XD
Your sketchy turned out fine :)
So true! It’s like when you’re trying to pick a new profile image. All the selfies look the same but you’re the only one that overthinks the selection process. XD

I like your style, really nice step by step process.
Amazing how you can do this on an iPad. Can't wait to see the characters :)
Thank you! I don’t know what to expect myself but hopefully they turn out looking good! :)
I know what you mean, after spending too much time looking at the same drawing, then it will become weird and it feels wrong and bad. That's why these days I don't dwell on things too long because otherwise I would just dump them in unfinished pile of stuff.
But this face is good and quite appealing already even in its simplicity. I wonder if you're going to continue working on it or will you leave it as is :).

Me yesterday. I went to work on coloring a skin tone for this and sculpting out the face. Eventually I was ready to take a break because it seemed like I was getting nowhere!
I’m always tempted to leave these sketches as is but I will keep working on it! I want to do different hair and makeup designs with this face. ^^
It's going to be such a good blank canvas to try out different things on. That is one of the things I love about digital art, that ability to have layers to try out things, in a way in can make an artist more bold to try things without the fear of 'ruining' their basic sketch.
I see other artists start with eyes as well, I always seem to start with scribbly circles and shapes for head and torso etc, not sure why.
I'm excited to see the various iterations of this.
The layers have been a lifesaver on ocassions! Oh and I agree with you, it has encouraged me to try new things and master them.
I used to start with circles and mapping out the face but in truth the circle was more like an oval. The entire face ends up looking too long and narrow. I still make this mistake but with the help of digital tools, it can be fixed with a few easy adjustments!
I hope I can successfully deliver!
You are right, i do believe different phases give different impressions
It’s interesting to see the process each and every time. :)
You are so talented pretty girl you!
Awww, thanks! 💜
