I'm up in Vancouver, Canada this weekend for a dance event and wasn't planning to post again this weekend - but in a short break from dance classes I noticed something interesting that I thought was worth sharing/starting a conversation.
I'm sure many of you are aware that EOS is planning to launch what some people are calling " Steemit 2.0", which will be a blockchain based social media platform built on the EOS blockchain.
Today they announced that it will be called MEOS. When you go to their site - it doesn't display much of anything yet... except for one totally crazy, important detail. Instant account creation through Google.
Mind = Blown.
Here we are on Steem dealing with accounts either taking forever to be approved, or having to make people PAY for an account, and having to explain why they can't do much yet because they don't have enough RC tokens. Not to mention on top of all that, the signup process is unlike anything else the currently experience on the internet, and so it feels strange to them - especially if they already wonder if crypto is "real money".
Google signup on the other hand? That immediately builds trust and normalcy into the process. People use their Google account to sign into things every day without thinking about it. The familarity also makes it feel more like just a "normal site" instead of some crypto based site that needs to be explained.
One of the things that we've heard talked about a lot here in the Steem Eco System - is how one of the keys to unlocking growth and mass adoption is to make it so people don't even know they are really using the Steem Blockchain - they just think they are using their favorite app, game or social media site. Google sign ups helps accomplish that goal.
I'm not technically savvy enough to even know if we could every make something like that a possibility on the Steem Blockchain - but I thought this little piece of news from EOS was worth mentioning and discussing.
Ok, back to the dance floor...
Love you guys!

Hey Lea,
Hope you're well. I wouldn't get too carried away just yet. There was a time (when I joined) when you could sign up for Steemit with just a Facebook account.
The issue isn't so much a technical one, rather one of cost. It costs money (in terms of resources) to create accounts ( that can perform actions ) on the STEEM or EOS blockchains. Allowing people to create accounts without a verification process opens the door to spam and abuse of the network.
Any 'Steemit 2.0' will need to overcome similar hurdles.
I'm not sure that the discovery that block.one had trademarked a social network application under the name 'meos' (a few months ago) and meos.com is using some kind of google authentication tool before it can be accessed properly tells us much at all!
I wouldn't be surprised if Dan/ block.one are working on something, I don't think they're giving away any clues just yet though.

Hey @nanzo-scoop! Thanks so much for your thoughtful reply. Getting different perspectives on this is exactly why I wanted to make this post - to start a conversation and hopefully learn a bit more about what's going on.
So interesting to hear that people used to be able to make Steem accounts with Facebook - crazy to think about now! It makes sense that perhaps this is a transitionary step while they test and get their own systems in place. Also great points about how a non-verified signup process would lead to immediate spam. I guess there really are no "shortcuts" to signing up for a blockchain based site that doesn't come up against some of the some issues we run into here on Steem.
Have a good day my friend! I hope you are doing well!
LOL Meos means piss in spanish slang!😲😂🤣

nomen est omen :D
OMG I'm dying... that's hilarious!
Yes! Someone tell @dan ! :O XD ahah now he can name his Team WEOS another slang for where the piss come from ;)
Crazy! Thanks for the heads up on this.
P.S. - I’m in the Van airport right now! If you ever make it down to Kelowna, let me know.
That's so crazy we were in Vancouver at the same time! I was actually staying right down the street from the Airport at the Marriot. haha
I don't every really make it over to Kelowna very often - but I'll be sure to let you know if I ever do! Make sure to hit me up if you ever find yourself in Bellingham! :)
Well at least they don't have Eos Monsters yet.
haha! Valid.
Mass adoption of Steem blockchain means getting teens and twentysomethings on here. But mostly teens. That's the way it works. One teen signing up pretty much automatically means 10 more signing up. Then they show their older siblings, and then their parents and grandparents onboard bc they want to see what the young ones are doing, and voila! Mass adoption.
But of course for that we need to see MUCH easier signup and UI...
Just sayin' ;D
It's a smart move no doubt since so many people have gmails and makes the sign up process smoother but considering the fact that Googles last hack/data exploit came from this gmail login API I won't say its not without its issues.
You're also providing your data to Google with this API which is kind of what blockchain projects are trying to get away from. Maybe its a good first step to onboarding lets see, time will tell!
I don't think Latin people will be attracted to belong a project called that way!🤔🤣🤣

While interesting, I doubt it will really be that simple while providing to full use of the EOS blockchain. I recently went through the process of of creating an EOS wallet and account and it was not as easy as thr Steem signups I am seeing around these days. While it did let me buy an account with a credit card, It did not let me pay with EOS I already had. Also, once finally setup and as I tried to make some transfers and stakes, I ran into RAM and CPU cost or bandwidth issues that I could not understand. It seems to work like Steem Power and Resource Credits but had no idea or explanation on how they worked. Lastly, what real benefit does a Google centralized account signup really give? For me it is more of a security concern if we don’t have encrypted keys.

All great points @newageinv! I havn't much interaction with the EOS blockchain since setting up my wallet/buying some EOS before the launch last year, so it's interesting to hear that they have some similar bandwidth type issues that we experience here on Steem.
They haven't released a ton of information on how the google account creation will actually work -but it appears that their goal is to make account creation simple. Although people like us may look at including Google as a security concern or a move towards centralization - I can totally see it's value from a "let's sign up every day people" standpoint. It will be very interesting to keep an eye on Block One/Meos and see how this all progresses.
Is there a link for this yet? Steemit really needs to get their butt in gear this year otherwise they will be replaced. They should of been working all 2018 when they where swimming in money and had 70% more people yet we legit saw NOTHING

Time to buy EOS i guess LOL
haha yeah... EOS is probably a good coin to hold anyway because there are so many great uses cases for that blockchain. Could definitely be a top coin one day.
The sign up for any crypto project is too complicated for any mass adoption, including wallet structures. Average people do not even like having to use passwords much less all the public and private keys, and addresses, and yada yada. That is the biggest issue, with Steem especially. This could be a game changer, and I would love to give witness to any developer that could integrate that into the Steem Connect system. Could get allot more interested parties on the platform if the signup was way easier.

So far no pump for EOS.

I haven't had time to listen to the Witness Forum yet, but I read in @exyle's summary of it something about 'easier onboarding' said by Eli Powell.
Would this MEOS be the reason it's become a priority now, after all this time? Hopefully they are not just words.

I disagree with you! Most probably they have an alpha version for internal testing, and probably block.one is using the google services for companies. I do the same for my startup, and people in my company can use their account (not google account) and use apps from google (account manager, calendar, gmail, cloud, and all the others)
Wow, time to jump ship on STEEM? EOS is a beast.
Although the EOS the blockchain has a ton of potential, there are still a lot of dApps that are in pretty early phases of development. Steem, although not without issue, still is one of the most used blockchains in the world and has one of the biggest blockchain communities. Although we are in a bit of rocky place right now - I still have a lot of faith and hope in the future of this blockchain.
I start to dig into this some more and came up with some questions.
This is IMPORTANT!! @ned @andrarchy @elipowell @blockbrothers @exyle @s3rg3 @kenmelendez @jongolson @tarazkp @steemmonsters @aggroed @therealwolf @themarkymark Resteem and share so that Steemit can impliment this BEFORE MEOS!!
Hey @baah sorry I said this in the video - but didn’t type it out in the post. It looks like they are still getting google account creation setup - so it isn’t functional yet - but they are working on the framework to get it in place. Will be interesting to see how it all plays out!
hmmm... weird. I can't seem to figure out how to get a block.one email either! Where and how does one do that? When I try to create one via the meos.com link it only lets me create a @gmail.com address, which I already have. But it won't accept the @gmail.com address for sign in to MEOS. And when I go to https://block.one/ I don't see any way of setting up an email there either. What the...
Maybe they haven't cracked the onboarding code after all :/
That was my best guess too :D
