RE: Apostasy by the boat load!

Man that was great. I enjoyes reading it and could feel your passion. I have been in several conversations with believers about God's law and God's commands. The two phrases seem to be used interchangeably. Would you say that when Jesus speaks about the law and the commands that He is speaking of the 10, and more so with The Spirit, or would you say that Jesus is speaking of the 600+ levitican law? I have gotten answers from many points of view...what do you think?

Sort:

Would you say that when Jesus speaks about the law and the commands that He is speaking of the 10, and more so with The Spirit, or would you say that Jesus is speaking of the 600+ levitican law?

Where to begin....
Lets start with John 1:1, 14 " In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 14 - And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth." Ok so from here we can see that Jesus is the Word of God and that Jesus and God are the same.

In John 7:15-17 Jesus confirms that he didn't come with a different message but is only speaking God's word. " 15 And the Jews marveled, saying, “How does this Man know letters, having never studied?” 16 Jesus answered them and said, “My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me. 17 If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority."

Jesus came to bring the commandments of God to a greater meaning, people became too obsessed with keep rules and established rules and tradition that they put above the commandments.

Mark 7:8-9, 13 - For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men — the washing of pitchers and cups, and many other such things you do.” 9 He said to them, “All too well you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition." 13 "making the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such things you do.”

Paul also warned of the same thing...

Colossians 2:8 "Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ."

Since Jesus taught against the traditions of men and only taught what came from the Father, so I know that He was speaking about all the commandments of God. Now I have heard people say that He fulfilled all of those. My question would be how could he fulfill commandments that applied only to women or priests when He wasn't any one of those?

All of the commandments are to be kept and followed. Now can everyone of them be in this day and age...no! There is no temple, Levitical priest hood, etc.. but that doesn't mean they have been done away with.

Matthew 5:17-19 “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. 18 For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. 19 Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven."

He is saying that until the new heavens and new earth are here we are still supposed to be following God's law. Note that in the millennial kingdom God's law will be what judges the people of the earth.

Isaiah 2:3-4 Many people shall come and say, “Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, To the house of the God of Jacob; He will teach us His ways, And we shall walk in His paths.” For out of Zion shall go forth the law, And the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. 4 He shall judge between the nations, And rebuke many people; They shall beat their swords into plowshares, And their spears into pruning hooks; Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, Neither shall they learn war anymore.

We are to worship Him in spirit and in truth, what is truth? Jesus tells us in John 17:17 "Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth."

I'll close with this, when asked what the greatest commandments are he quotes Deuteronomy 6:4 and Leviticus 19:18.

Mark 12:28-31 "28 Then one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, perceiving that He had answered them well, asked Him, “Which is the first commandment of all?” 29 Jesus answered him, “The first of all the commandments is: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment. 31 And the second, like it, is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

Maybe it's just me, but I didn't see an answer in there. Just a simple answer. When you use Laws and Commandments....do you view it as keeping the ten or the 600+. It is a simple answer, but a complicated theology haha.

It is not a simple answer....but to answer your question Yes in keeping all of them, all the commandments given to Moses for God's people. But again you have to remember that we can't keep all of them because of certain conditions.

He kept them all, making Him sinless and we should do our best to follow Him. We have only one perfect example in the Bible so why would we want to do something different than He did?

1 Corinthians 11:1 "Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ."

1 John 2:3-6 "Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. 4 He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. 6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked."

Reminder that Jesus didn't come to preach something different.

John 7:16-17 "Jesus answered them and said, “My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me. 17 If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority."
