Altavista, Webcrawler and Yahoo were the first big search engines. You could also consider Compuserve and AOL's internal network searching features. Are you young or do you just have a bad memory?
Your analogy is also very crude into what's being compared. Search engines are not a value store that end users have invested in.
Bitcoin is the AOL of crypto currency. Its the Myspace of social media. It makes plenty of sense.
First mover eventually gets phased out. This is what a phase out looks like.
No phased out would take an actual innovator like ethereum but it's a moot point as I pointed out the analogy is very crude to begin with.
