Will monetary reward destroy genuine interactions in steemit Platform? (2)

in #education7 years ago (edited)

Money is essential to our viability and thus we all need money (at least some form of it) in order to live a good life. On the other hand, it is argued that

the love of money is the root of all evil

(1Timothy 6:10) because it leads to greed, jealousy and other bad things like killings, scamming (too many scammers , spammers and people sharing phishing links here) , kidnapping, war , betrayal et al. Most worringly, these problems are more prevalent with our central governments which led Sir Winston Churchill assertion:

The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings; the inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of miseries.

Conversely, however, even with these downside to money, we still need it and unlike Facebook , Reddit, Twitter et al, Steemit has indeed provided a platform where people share knowledge, support innovation, build contacts and yes , the introduction of monetary reward has made it possible for people to earn income online, raise money for projects leading to more innovation, earn money with our data’s (unlike Facebook) and grow our steemit community. However , above all these upsides, monetary reward has led to greed and greed is the main issue that is destroying steemit and our community at large-here are some few points:

Focus on Money: I came here for the money, however stayed for the community, knowledge I gain daily and great people I meet here. The issue that led many people to stop posting on steemit or give up and complain bitterly against steemit is that they focused on money and compare themselves with those on trending and hot pages-maybe this issue was caused by those who introduced them to steemit ( sign up immediately and start making thousands of money the same day without hard work) . The reality , however, is that it takes time , smart blogging, relationships (building contacts) and hard work (patience is key) to succeed here . Moreover, focusing on fun and learning side of steemit (knowledge) will lead to success because money will always come in the long run. Therefore, new members should initially comment (not spam comments like follow for follow or vote for vote) on successful people posts, learn and build their contacts after which they can gradually start posting their own blog posts –focusing on their core-competences.

Mass Posting:

Another bad thing here is throwing out 8 to 10+ daily posts without having time to respond to comments and at least rewarding great comments on your posts . Most worringly, the aim of such massive daily posts is to rape the reward pool and has nothing to do with quality-reason is that , it takes time to write a good quality post and respond to all great comments in your posts (reward them too). Therefore, focus on quality and not quantity and reward those that take out time to comment prudently on your posts.

Conclusion: indeed monetary reward on steemit has its downside however there are many upsides to it –especially the ability of people making genuine money online (especially those who otherwise do not have any other options). Importantly, steemit is bigger than just monetary rewards, rather there are other great things , examples : Knowledge, innovation, contacts, community etc. Therefore, we all should focus less on greed and concentrate more on other great aspects of steemit . Importantly, employing this strategy will surely lead to our collective success.

Wow you nailed it...I agree. Monetary rewards has its advantages (as you indicated in this post) however when we focus too much on it, it leads to greed , jealousy and other downsides too...therefore focusing on other aspects of steemit like educational, responding to your commenters, community building and innovation is great and leads to financial gains-in the long run...100% upped and thanks for this great article

Very good point, I agree...Thanks for your comment

That's why I upvote almost every reply on my blog. I believe that if I help others succeed on Steemit then I will also succeed

Good point indeed however should focus only on rewarding great comments , not spammers. More success.

I give an upvote for anything from good to great ..I love the idea that you can adjust for that and only give a little or a lot ..if you have the weight to to it of course ....no reason to give it all to a few really talented people and alienate the rest ....so I am always generous with garfield thumbsup.jpeg

I feel you. If it's deliberate spam they aren't getting a vote, but if I think they're a newbie learning how to find their voice on Steemit, then they get my upvote

Good point, that is the way

Well analysed...thanks for your comment

Beautiful topic...

Hivemind is planning some solutions for that, by the way...
D.

What do you like about the post...bot? .

Well, the post is not really detailed, but the topic is interesting...

As i said, Havemind have a feature to mute whales or to silent "paid" comments... so, monney wont be an issue for interaction on Steemit.
D.

@charles1 this is the plain truth. Yes, let me say 99% of all Steemians are on this platform to make money. But people fail to realise one thing that where you are making income either on daily, monthly or otherwise needs to be taken care of just like the physical business. Build the community the way you would treat your physical business. Respond to people you comment on your post as if you are a receptionist, customer care representative with all humility. People are failing in steemit because they wants to turn a millionaire over night. We all have to start somewhere, defend and protect your name, brand and integrity in the platform that is the way. Learn to return favour to other people who are contributing to your success on the platform. effective communication is one of the stronghold of success. Thanks @charles1 for bringing this on. I've learnt my lessons from the mistakes I made in the past.

Welcome and thanks for an insightful comment. I wish you more success.

Wow. This is really great as you really nail the point.
It is true like you said majority of people joining steemit are just for the reward system i.e the monetary system and also it has caused greed like you said. But i am not surpise to see the greed because normally, money sometimes causes greed among individual.
Like you just said. Mass posting is now common among this steemit platform.
It is better to post 2 quality post per day which will add knowledge to the community than posting 10-15 post just to make some reward whereas the post is not quality enough.

So we should try posting quality post and content that will add value and knowledge to the community.

Thank you for sharing this great write up with us

Point, I agree with you. Thanks for your comment and more success. I am sure that good comments like this will bring back yor destroyed reputation...

@charles1 Great post here, I must say. Let me first assert that the issue of money is key and therefore central to human existential.
The Bible recognises this and states as follows:

  1. Money is a messenger
  2. Money is a defence
  3. Money answereth all things

Every living human being can attest to this fact that money has a lot of messages to attend, many issues of life to defend and many questions to answer. These have led to the love of it and unfortunately, the crave for it gives rise to the plethora of evil on every side of our society, many of which you mentioned in your post here.
We all need money for sustenance and survival in many ways but we must understand that money goes with value. Yes, it so because money is scarce. So as we come into steem community let us bring in value through quality posts that brings knowledge; this will in turn bring the expected reward in monetary term.
Thanks again for this Insight.

Thanks for this comment @uduben , you analysed it well.

Thanks for bringing this up. I am already on my eight month as a Steemian and I must say I feel like I have so much to say about the functionality of this great platform. Not being a native English speaker is a disadvantage as this fact makes it much more difficult to express your thoughts in the best way. Adding to this the fact that I consider myself to be still an illiterate in the blockchain and crypto currency world, it made it even harder for me to take the courage and write anything in this regard.
I totally agree with all the arguments you wrote especially you’re the point about the focus on money. I wouldn’t count on people to be less greedy as greed is part of human nature! Perhaps a solution might be to remove the toolbar which shows the rewards from Steemit homepage. Seeing the dollar symbol and the amount of the money makes you think about the money all the time.

Good point, thanks for your comment...and your english is great. More success to you

There are 2 sides to everything. IMO, money is neither the root of all evil, nor a blessing to the world.

Money is just a thing. A colorful paper that has a value we all agree it has. Meaning, it is up to us to determine how we'll use it. It can be used for both, funding wars and feeding the starving children. Just like fire can cook our food, or burn down our home.

So, I think it comes down to perception. Each of us chooses how we perceive the world around us, and what we think about it.
I chose to see money as positive. A tool we can use to make a better world, to improve the lives of all.

As for, will money ruin steemit... I don't know it depends on all of us (on some more than others, but that's another topic).
I can tell you this, just like you @charles1, I came here expecting to earn money for what I post, but now I stay for the comunity.

Good points raised in your comments...however it depends on how you view and accept money indeed . The reality , is that money has led to good and also evil in our world. Thanks for your comment

As you have fate, I have fate too. I believe the majority of Steemians will keep their integrity so Steemit will rise. In everything there is balance, so I see those other people who keep only their interests ahead of value, as necessity part of this nature. I feel sorry for them as they are making stronger only their ego and will be hungry only for more.

Let everyone find their own path, who is wise enough, they will realise importance of keeping a value of Steemit. Lets have fate in us who are genuine.

Namaste.

You analysed it well...good points indeed. Thanks for your comment

Thank you very much!

You are welcome and more success to you

Yeah as long as we keep pushing on and uploading good content then everything will work out for the best in the end.

When you see trending posts, it's kinda disappointing. It seems if you can pay enough to bot, you can literally make anything on trending regardless of the quality. If you don't pay to bot, you can hardly hit on trending. It spreads the wrong message.

Hope steemit updates fix those issues and make it better place for everyone.

Good point, I agree...its about investing money and getting exposure.... thanks for your comment

I observed how people build contacts here. Some of them throw a big contest that enables hidden talents to be discovered. For me, that is also what the platform needs. A bunch of good mentors who rewards undervalued good posts. And so we can avoid talented people from quitting. 😊

Point, I agree with you...there are indeed many aspects to this platform ...not money alone..isnt it?

Yeap. I agree with you. There are also nice steemians here, although they only earn less, continue to do blogs because they love it. It's not all about money after all. 😊

Point...thanks for your comment

I came here just recently... for the tech actually, as i was researching EOS, and Steemit is handed around as proof of concept for a blockchain application, that actually works out... so i wanted to check it out... (Prior to that i had stumbled on steemit and been laughing over the dollar equivalent of upvotes, not realising it literarilly signifies $). But i did stay for the money, for a little experiment, to see if i can actually "make it" without investing anything, and just focusing on the content side, and it seems to work out... slowly... but still!
The point is, yes i agree, that the monetary aspect clutters a lot of the platform, but it's all about the network and the people creating interesting content etc. and once you've pierced through the surface, there's a depth of conversation and exchange, not seen on many platforms. And the money aspect makes it all the more addictive...

You analysed it well...good point indeed. Thanks for your comment

I totally agree with you, Sir Charles. Most people, who quit Steemit, didn't see the other beautiful upsides of the platform aside from earning, which my friends actually thought. Steemit has changed me from being i-don't-like-to-engage-any-talk on Facebook to a greeter on this platform. I try to welcome new people on here, make sure that they belong and that some people on here have noticed them.
In my opinion, money isn't always evil. It depends on us if we let money control us or we control this colored paper.

Point...you analysed it well. More success to you.

Thank you for appreciating my comment, Sir Charles. I'll look forward to reading more of your future blogs. ::-)

Can be, when voting on own post will be allowed

What ??? can you elaborate

If voting on own post will be allowed you rather will sell your post instead of sharing it. It looks now more like trading then actual liking. Steemit is the only platform which allows and in fact support self voting which is rater embarassing on another social media platform. But what to do when no ones like to upvote you because it is better to keep upvotes for self purpose...

Like @ronja1 and yourself already said, monetary rewards have their pros and cons.
So right now, i feel like steem is going be an automated Business for a lot of the users. Monetary rewards are in my view, a great thing, and really atm, with this low user numbers, everyone has still the chance to have some impact in a niche category.
I believe that, at least 20 % of users here on steemit are used as bots, voting stuff up for some sbd or steem, or are just here to spam. And here comes issue with the bots. A lot of Post, having 50$+ already, are upvoted by 20+ people but just viewed by 5 or less. I for myself am using those numbers as an indicator if i am going to read/view the post or not, but with this system, i will not always read quality content, i will read the most upvoted content.

I hope i could tell you my hypotheses clear enough

Dynamic Steemians Discord Link

You raised a good point

From day One
Since birth ... we are driven by rewards: It’s human nature to be driven by those that rewards us.... and that is where the scammers strikes. Scammers often lure unsuspected victims whom are driven by free/quick money. Such as bitconnect scammers, mining scammers, Nigerian prince scammers and the latest scam.... “send me bitcoins and I will return double the amount.”

No matter what the products are .... some will always have bad intentions... but as long as we have a majority of honest steemians... the platform will flourish.

You analysed it well ..I agree. Thanks for your comment and more success

We need basic money for survival, but when it turns towards race to earn more i.e. Greed then it fails to justify any work related to it. I agree with you @charles1

Point...thanks for your comment and more success

I had to take a step back and ask myself:

"How do I feel the most balanced?"

I only have a certain amount of time and other things take priority in life other than being on the computer or other device all the time. I had to recognize I don't have as much time as some others might.

I had to accept and be OK with this.

Then I had to examine my truest motives. I believe the gift economy is a real thing. I've come to seen it in action in my own life.

I can't rely on money. It's a tool. A form of energy that simply gets corrupted by the wrong intentions. I can't rely on ANY cryptocurrency. All that has to be done is for a government to declare it illegal, ban it, or worse -- have the lights go out -- permanently. The ledgers don't exist without software and electricity.

So, again, What is my motive?

Once you can answer that question, I think you can find the right balance.

For me, I had to admit to myself, I just feel completely overwhelmed and irritated if I spend longer than 3 minutes on Discord. I don't like how that feels so I let that go until I want to play around in that some more. I write when I have something to say AND when I can get the time to do so. More often than not, it means I contribute via well-placed upvotes and comments that actually contribute something.

I agree with you...prioritizing time and using it well adds value to all...good points indeed, thanks for your comment.

Great post @charles1. "...focusing on fun and learning side of steemit (knowledge) will lead to success because money will always come in the long run. " Love this quote from your post. And I find this to be true in many areas of life. Had I entered into the world of writing and publishing (years ago) with only money in mind, I would have thrown in the towel a long time ago. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Welcome @norma-jean, thanks for your comments and I wish you success .

Money is really necessary for us
It affects something positive rather than negative
A very good article

Good point, however it depends if you concentrate only on the monetary part -as explained on this post...isnt it?

really the money we really need in our lives, without our money seems unable to do anything, about the crime in the karenyalan money that depends on the good and the bad man himself,

Point...thanks for your comment

I think money will make steemit better... Over a period of time as mass adoption continues, people will realize that the best performing steemians are those with the hottest content. Thereby setting the bar for new users... But I could be wrong!

It really depends if those people posts are of good quality...

That leads to the need of an algorithm that detects Steemit Cartel activity... hehe

@charles1 I do find it strange that compared with the other social media interaction on the Steem blockchain is at such a low level. We are averaging 2.5 comments per posts. Which is incredibly low!
Just like I did came for the money and stick around for the community, trying to advocate interaction is much as possible.
People are spamming others post, just hoping to get an upvote on their comment. People are posting shit just to score an upvote. But the thing that drives me crazy it is people do invest in their post, buying it into the Trending pages and then neglect to reply on the comments they are getting!
I am a true believer that interaction is utmost important on the Steem blockchain and that it is the only way the steem blockchain can survive!
I do try my best, to get things changed, but my impact on the blockchain is rather low.
Normally I won't post a link to one of my blogs in a comment, but for once I will. I don't want to spam you, I just think that it is important! Feel free to read it and to comment on it:
https://steemit.com/steemit/@fullcoverbetting/steem-feature-request-let-s-make-interaction-more-important

Good point indeed , I agree.

Surebet, 'money maybe the root of all evils' but to some across the divide, 'money answers all things'.
I think it should be a case of live and let live.
Let the wheat and chaff exist together in the Steemit field. When the harvesters comes, the choice will be clear; ultimately Steemit shall survive.
Thanks @charles1 for raising the issue.

Good point, I agree

Money is not the root of all evil, the love of money is.
The rewards we earn is what is trying to tweak the system,
Love - above the necessary level for money is what is trying to destroy the community, and is trying to surpass genuine interactions.

Point, I agree. Thanks for your comment.

Excellent post! very thoughtful and motivating. Money is not bad, Money is Energy" therefore we have to activate it and set it in motion in the best way here in steemit and everywhere. @charles1

I agree with you...thanks for your comment

“I came here for the money, however stayed for the community, knowledge I gain daily and great people I meet here.” If the vast majority here have this concept or not even in it for the money, just stay it will succeed. The thing is this Steemit goes the direction it’s people go. It’s what people make it. Other platforms went the way of the people. Yes ingenuity and testing did drive some direction but at the end of the day the “consumer” does control thing no matter the manipulation.

Very good point indeed , I agree

With the current approach, what suffers is the ability to generate a strong, critical and consistent readership. Right now the writer has to worry about making money from each post otherwise it is a let down.

Good content must be viewed and commented upon without fear or favor . It is only then that writers can improve.

In todays world, it is impossible to ignore the money. But if you ignore good content as well, then one day there will be less of it on the platform.

My sincere hope is that we figure out a better way to rate genuine content and also distribute highly rated content in feeds

You raised a good point...thanks

This really should only be a temporary issue. there are many projects being built upon the STEEM blockchain that re tackling this very problem. What you all have to remember is that steemit is nothing more than a single interface made for interacting with the STEEM blockchain.

Good point about steem blockchain which I am fully aware however this post was based only on steemit ...Thanks for your comment.

I guess as long as everybody is happy with spending some time on Steemit and having fun, the reward is just a little bonus, whci hmakes people even happier.

Good point, thanks for your comment

another great post! i agree i think being able to earn on steemit is fantastic and a new realm with the crypto world however maybe it should be more a subsidized hobby that people enjoy rather than a full time job possibly?

yes, however it depends on how a person wants to approach it..

i suppose yes

Nice piece, however money won't ruin Steemit itself.

Currently thy payment system rewards those who vote first before even reading. And voting for scrap comments only encourages scrap comments.

Not everyone here is here for the money. Though every one here needs some form of financial income to cover their life. I'm new here but the challenges faced are as old as time.

Recognition, feeling of personal value, and belonging. All these are available here on Steemit. Have integrity with yourself and build your community from within and from without. Make value that will sustain time and it will reward you. Be valuable and you will eat.

Like the little dog Gif very appropriate here. Can't find how to re steem or I would.

IMO I look at commentators pages and try to find something they have done I like and vote there. This way I encourage them to continue their work which I appreciate. Sometimes the comment adds enough value on its own for the vote.

Good point, thanks for your comment

I think money platforms do inhibit genuine interactions because users see each other as colleagues rather than friends.

Good point however it depends on how they push their love for money.....

Ever noticed how it's always the same kind of "How to get rich on Steemit" posts that usually get upvoted while other types of content tend to go unnoticed?

what is good about the post...bot?

Thanks bro for this great post, I think this is our problem on Steemit for now, I appreciate your courage and encouragement.

what do you like about the post? pls elaborate

Yes, money is the root of all evil but the more of it we have the better quality of life we experience, so it's a fine line to walk. Don't pursue money in a way that calls your character into question. Just work hard, be persistent and educate yourself to appeal to the masses. Loved your post!

Good point...Love of money is the root of all evil..thanks for your comment

Buen post.

I think the problem is that everyone alwants to interact with the big whales but we miss good content that doesnt have much of value, i think steemit should make ot where people can get they're posts out a different way
