My wife and I have actually started to make a conscious effort over the past couple of years to share experiences with our nieces and nephews instead of buying things for them. We would much rather take them to a show or some kind of event as opposed to buying some manufactured product that they will get tired of or break or outgrow in a matter of months.

I lost count of how many expensive toys my kids got bored of really quickly. There's a lot of pressure to buy this stuff, but it's not actually that good.
I hear you. I do feel you can never have too many matchbox cars though or Lego's. Beyond that I'd rather spend my money on other things :)
