posted about the ad produced by Greenpeace that the Iceland supermarket wanted to use over the Christmas season. It shows how the products we use are causing the home of the orangutan and other wildlife to be destroyed for palm oil production. Iceland have pledged to remove palm oil from their own products. The ad has been banned from TV, so let's spread it via social media so everyone gets to see it.@voxxov
I think Iceland are to be applauded for wanting to put out something that is not just about encouraging us to buy more stuff. Christmas tends to be a time of over-consumption and we have to fight against that.
@voxxov recemtly returned to Steem after many months. He's an artist and musician, but is choosing to concentrate on the most important issues facing our world now. It's tempting to ignore them and let ourselves be distracted by petty political arguments. Let's talk about what matters.

I am glad to see this ban thanks for putting the word out on such a subject we need to save the planet and its living creatures @steevc
So true, it seems since WW 2onwards Christmas has become about buying and spending than it's origin roots, which is too bad as it is part of a culture and it sort of got co-opted by the consumerists agenda. That's sad. Christmas for me is warm food friends and family, the tree, carols, chruchs festooned and at their best with voices singing and just the general good will feeling of people. It doesn't need tons of parcels under the tree to make it good, just an orange a sugar mouse and some loving people makes a good Christmas morning!
The eating is age old, at least here. When my sister in law, who is from Florida and soon will move here, had a nap in the Christmas days last year she asked when she came down: "how many meals have you been eating while I slept?"
But underneath that the family hygge is of course what it is about.
My wife and I have actually started to make a conscious effort over the past couple of years to share experiences with our nieces and nephews instead of buying things for them. We would much rather take them to a show or some kind of event as opposed to buying some manufactured product that they will get tired of or break or outgrow in a matter of months.
I lost count of how many expensive toys my kids got bored of really quickly. There's a lot of pressure to buy this stuff, but it's not actually that good.
I hear you. I do feel you can never have too many matchbox cars though or Lego's. Beyond that I'd rather spend my money on other things :)
Jesus.
As if ads promoting consumption aren't also political!

I am cooking like a wartime gran. Nothing is wasted. I also mainly use local products which especially for the vegetables is a bit of a challenge in the cold half of the year. But I do not want it to be too fanatic so sometimes I buy some spiced up palm oil for my youngest daughter and wife:
I do not eat it myself and neither do my eldest, but that is mainly because we are not really into palm oily things.
My son does love that stuff. I need to look into what other products contain palm oil and cut our consumption.
A lot of prefabricated food contains palm oil, primarily because it is cheap, partly because it doesn't melt, has a special consistency (the one you know from Nutella) and do not easily get rancid. Prefabricated bread, pizza and cookies are filled with it.
I make almost all my food from raw materials, and bake my own bread so there is not much palm oil in my house. But my wife's shampoo maybe, and the Nutella!
I ought to make more bread. My neighbour is a miller and he gave us some sacks of flour that we need to use up.
As soon as you get into the routine it is not that bothersome really and you get a lot of quality for no money. Time is the key. Use only a little yeast, and let it rest for a long time in the fridge or another cold place before baking.
When I was ill last year and couldn't do a thing my girls had to eat supermarket bread. They were complaining a lot.
I have a bread making machine, so it's pretty easy to just throw in the ingredients. My daughter likes making bread too. It is about getting into the habit
Sure. The economy of me and my wife has been based on low income, low expenses, but more time. It can be hard to throw in time consuming things in a modern lifestyle.
