The Great Pacific garbage patch, as Wikipedia calls it, is the biggest carpet or continent entirely made up of plastic garbage that are floating around on the planets oceans.
The plastic got thrown away in coastal areas all over the planet, washed away into the sea and thanks to oceanic currents the it gathered in huge areas. The end result looks like this:

In order to make the effects long-lasting, maybe drop a couple of bombs on the major plastic-producing industrial centers too?
Joke aside, interesting idea. : )
I agree that the plasic in the oceans is an awful probelm and something that definitly needs to be dealt with but wouldn't blowing it up damage marine life?
I understand where you're coming from, I'm intrigued, would it solve the problem of microscopic plastic? I can see how to might erradicat the visible pieced however there is so much plastic in the sea which we cant even see
We certainly need to think outside the box to solve this problem. They could make recycling barges scoup it up to melt it down to be reused. I saw a video of people in Allepo melting down plastic to make fuel for heat, when the city ovetaken. Free fuel sitting out there for people savvy enough to take advantage of it...
