Before I explain at length about the effects of the use of personal protective equipment on the body, it helps you first visit my previous post on this link, to find out the function of the use of personal protective equipment.

The effect of the use of personal protective equipment which I will explain in this content is my personal experience and is very likely to be different from that experienced by others, this is due to several factors namely the quality of hazmat clothing, hazmat clothing thickness, types of hazmat clothing. Also influenced by temperatures in the area. It is also influenced by body mass. So to strengthen the data, I also have to explain about me. I have a height of 170 cm, and have a weight of 75 kg. According to some literature this is the ideal body, meaning that it is neither obese nor thin. I live and work in Aceh with the current temperature in Aceh during the day reaching 32 degrees Celsius and at night 25 degrees Celsius. When working in an isolation room, there is also air conditioning.

The effect that I will share here is experienced by me when I use two types of personal protective equipment when I work serving patients suspected of being infected with coronavirus. I use these two types of personal protective equipment at different times depending on the available stock at work. The first is a hazmat shirt made from 75% spundbond. This type of material is able to withstand viruses and droplets. But this material is not waterproof. The use of personal protective equipment is also accompanied by using a head covering and eye patch that consists of glasses, face shields, surgical masks that are overwritten with N95 masks. Also use surgical gloves with several layers and use plastic socks and boots.

What effect does my body feel using this type of hazmat shirt?
  • 0-10 minutes
At that time the body temperature is still normal. But because all the body is covered with personal protective equipment, the hearing function will be reduced by around 20-30%, the olfactory function will be reduced by 80-90%, the eye function will be reduced by 20-30%. To speak, the volume must be increased by 20-30% to be heard by others.

  • 10-20 minutes
Body temperature begins to rise, but sweat has not come out and is still comfortable with the hazmat shirt.

  • 20-30 minutes
Body temperature has risen again, sweat has begun to come out on the surface of the skin but has not wet the clothes I use.

  • 30-60 minutes
Sweat had soaked the clothes I was wearing, sweat had also come out on my head and face so that my vision began to decrease to around 50%. This is also influenced by hot steam coming out of the gap of the mask to the glasses.

  • 60 minutes and above
During this time, I worked in a sweaty body. Very uncomfortable, my body temperature was like in a sauna and I was demanded to move in serving patients. The throat has started to dry, causing thirst.
