When they have babies they seem to disappear underground for a month or more, so maybe they need food stashes all year round. There doesn't seem to be many studies done on chipmunk behavior, and the conclusions of the few studies we have found do not seem to reflect the behavior we observe in our chipmunk 'herds'!
They can fit 3 peanuts in their mouth! Then they carry them off to their food storage hole and immediately come back from more.
