There are some pretty incredible creatures in the Amazon. I wouldn't be surprised if these are all based on real fish.
Have you heard of the Boto? It's a pink river dolphin that lives in the Amazon. :-)

I have seen that dolphin on tv documentaries, but I had forgotten what they were called. I tried to look up what a fish with tentacles around its mouth might be called, but I didn't come up with anything.
