Outside, all of the fences and trees on my property fell over. Even the brand new aluminum fence we had put up months before did not withstand the winds of the hurricane. It was so impressive to see how an aluminum fence bent in a 45° angle due to the winds of the storm. We had spent the time during the event for the north to protect our families as we were not certain that the construction type of our home would withstand a category four or five hurricane. Memories of hurricane Andrew were rampant at the time and therefore we decided to stay safe and evacuate. Flooding, was another one of the concerns that we had since we live so close to the coast.
However, only two days after the event we decided to come home and survey the property to see the extent of any damage. We were pleasantly surprised that same day we were able to get power back and therefore decided to stay. The surrounding neighborhood was still recovering as flooding had yet to subside but it was clear that a time for rebuilding was necessary. The thing that got us the most sad was the fact that we had a mango tree that was very giving in the years we had spent there which had fallen. Despite asking people around to see if there was anyway to save it, most said that it was needed to be cut down in order to clear up the debris it was causing and to fix the fences it had fallen on. Therefore, with a heavy heart we proceeded to cut the tree.
A couple of weeks later, after returning from a trip to see the family and our properties in Puerto Rico which had just been devastated from Hurricane Maria only a week later, we noticed that the stump of the tree had started to grow new leaf. I quickly took a picture and send it to a friend that I had seen in Puerto Rico you told me that mango trees are known from recovering despite tipping over. He immediately told me that that was the case and that I could take some actions to help the tree grow back. It was just on time as I had already contracted a company to come and pull the trunk from its roots. I immediately canceled that request; it was a great example of how things happen for reason as I had been waiting for days for though for the company to come and do the job but they were delayed given all the work they had after the storm.
I proceeded to treat the area closely after clearing the debris, and this last weekend as I was mowing the lawn I continued to see how its growth has been going. I was so happy to see some mangos actually growing on the tree! While I am not sure if these would grow full size this season, the fact that it is providing fruit made me reflect of how great nature is. It demonstrates how sometimes things go through adversity but survive and could thrive at the end. I believe this could happen to us as individuals as well. There are times when we are put up against situations we cannot understand or trials that we believe cannot be overcome. However, these could be times for us to learn and adapt to strengthen our resilience and grit which become important factors in success.
This has also made me reflect about Steem and the community. Last year was our hurricane event as the markets made most come to their knees and even more quit outright. Even projects and accounts that held millions of Steem Power had to rethink their strategies as it was no longer sustainable to survive off of liquidating Steem alone. This meant business model were now broken and needed to be reborn in a different way. The ecosystem moved into a survival mode, instead of a thriving one. However, many lessons were taught thru this time and focus came back into the equation as the community rallied behind each other to send the message that they are the true underlying value of the ecosystem.
Since then, like my mango tree, we have seen careful focus on growing slowly and sustainably. The question now lies if we will be able to sees its fruits? I think the experience has put us into questions that are necessary to determine what the future for each of us lies. However, I believe that the foundation of what has been built is what made it survive in the first place; community and engagement. While prices have rebounded, engagement measured by daily active accounts continues to be flat near the bottoms of the metrics being measured. New accounts continue to be created and while retention is improving thanks to the communities fostering engagement, churn continues to be an issue. It is up to the community to lay the seeds that will bring fruit so we need to continue to think outwards instead of inwards for the improvement to take place. It will not be easy but I think there are necessary steps to take this experience and build from it to ensure that the fertile foundation being laid is to harvest fruit for the future.

My aunt lives in Miami and has a bunch of mango trees in her backyard as well. She had some slight damage also.

It was a mess down here for weeks with all the trees that got knocked down. Luckily no severe damages to home unless a tree fell on it!

Those were some great mangos so I am glad to see if they come back!
I hope so!

Way way behind on any engagement "in here" @newageinv, but taking a little time while finishing up my BNB transition (wrote my first post in several days about it this morning), to catch up a bit.
I did not know you and your family were impacted by those hurricanes. I have never been subject to that myself, as I have never lived in an area where they are found. That said, years ago I was on the East coast one when was approaching and all outbound flights were cancelled, i.e. we were going to have to "ride it out" ... At the last minute, it changed course and I was still able to fly home back out to Washington (state).
I'll never forget the pilot coming on a while later and asking us to look out our windows (I was reading, as usual ...). Down below, the remnants of the hurricane were rolling over West Virigina. I had been flying for years by that point in time, but I had never seen anything remotely close to the turmoil down below. I just remember being thankful we were flying over it all and thinking what an incredible force of nature these storms are.
Glad to hear you, your family, and your property are doing okay. I'm sure it left quite an impression. But ... You are still there! 😉
Always great to hear from you and knowing your thoughts! Thanks for the words and sharing your experience!
