I keep seeing my name pop up regarding the curation of content.
I have always been open about how I use Steem and what I believe Steem will become.
I believe Steem will become the biggest social-economic ecosystem in the blockchain space. STEEM will drive it and SMT's/SE tokens will grow it.
It's been the essence of my blog for 3 years.
I still stand by my own vision for Steem after all those years.
But this vision doesn't manifest in a couple of days. It takes years. And Steem changes over the years with different Hard Forks.
Since HF 22, new rules have been introduced, obviously, I want to try them out.
So I talk openly about things like curating and about things I find out since the new system in a way other people would talk about a new expansion for World of Warcraft.
The way I play Steem has completely changed since HF22.
I used to make 14 posts a week. 7 about STEEM and 7 about good times with friends, beer, bbq, oldskool gaming.
I invested in STEEM to empower my own blog. I started with nothing, like anyone else.
Because almost nobody wanted to buy the amount of STEEM that I bought to empower their own blog, I ended up with a very select group of people still blogging (and not putting it into a bot) and having a decent stake that took the same risk.
You automatically ended up supporting each other in your blogging efforts because you are in the same boat and it gives income stability to your blog. And you also know they will keep that STEEM.
Very unlike those early content creators that where giving 100k+ SP without ever investing a penny and selling it all, and some slamming the door in your face on the way out.
Anyway. I no longer have to support my fellow risktaking bloggers and I no longer make 14 posts a week because the EIP has given me/us something great.
A way to still make my SP work for me, while my behavior benefits the platform more.
Is it perfect? no. Is it better? you bet it is.
I have realized that most people couldn't give a shit about my bbq posts, friends posts, beer selfies, gaming contests etc. etc. So I ditched all that and kept my Steem content. It's doing well.
Even though there is no view counter on Steem anymore someone is watching my vlogs cause they get a very decent amount of views for content so niche.
Also, Instead of allocating 8 votes a day to certain individuals (two votes to myself) I now support 40+ authors with an auto vote on several percentages. Usually, around the 4-5 minutes mark because that's the system that was implemented.
Do I read all those posts within 5 minutes? No, ofcourse I don't. I'm not a speed reader and some of these people post when I sleep.
Do I check the quality of their content? Yes, I do. But when it suits me.
Most of the users on my auto list are people I know have put a lot of time and effort into the platform and are still here after they went through all the shit.
Because the new system has just come out I see absolutely nothing wrong with giving back to those first.
I do swap them around. I removed 2 today and added a few more (some totally new) this morning.
I want to support these users because I think it's a good place to put some of the inflation which is my right to allocated as an SP holder.
It was funny to see to be instantly judged for that behavior on a person's post. Like it's all I do. I consider it another opinion formed without proper research to back it up. I have seen it a thousand time on Steem. You get immune to it and at times I just mute it because otherwise, I would go nuts.
I have plenty of votes left beside my auto list. 10 votes a day is a lot, especially when you break them up.
And I use them as I see fit.
This post, for instance, did very well, manually curated.
https://steemit.com/newsteem/@holm/i-just-turned-my-account-from-a-minnow-into-an-orca-what-now
I also sometimes go to the new page in the hope to find something decent. There almost never is. I don't enjoy it there very much.
But as it happens, this morning I did find something decent and upvoted it accordingly.
Sometimes I hear that making your SP work for you is something horrendous.
Well, that's easy to say when you never bought a penny of STEEM. But as an investor that's still buying STEEM today, that's simply too ludicrous to respond to.
Of course, I want SP to work for me, it's one of the most amazing things about investing in Steem.
I wrote recently I earned 950SP-1000SP on curating now. Or about 18% ROI on my SP (Absolutely barbaric!).
I believe that most of the STEEM I give away, for now, is going into the strong hands of people that believe in this place. Something this platform also needs. And I hope they pass it on to someone else.
I probably mix it all up moving forward, but this is how it it for now.
I don't see it as my role to discover new talent. I simply don't enjoy it. I do take recommendations though as I would if someone would recommend me a film or a book.
To me, It's up to the talent itself to get discovered. It's not a one-way street. Get active.
In my experience on Steem, there are certain individuals that make it work, get known, find support and grow their account and some can't do it. I don't know why that is, just that it is like that.
I can from here go on making a case that Steem is much more now than a content discovery platform and that some people live in the past when they only focus on that aspect of Steem.
But I think I rambled enough for a Sunday already.
So far I think #newsteem is pretty great. Giving plenty of options for SP holders to generate a decent ROI for showing behavior that benefits the platform more than before.
Not perfect, but better.
And it's catching on. Today for the first time in a long time the amount of liquid STEEM was reduced (200k powered up since yesterday).
If that trend can keep up I expect beautiful things.
Have a good Sunday.

thanks exyle, it is enjoyable following your journey :)
I am just a guy who started from the beginning with nothing, never left in either hard times or good times, always kept blogging and bought STEEM. I have a clear vision of what I think Steem will become and follow that vision until it becomes reality. I like talking about my journey and if people enjoy that I think that's cool.
You are a curator. How are you finding #newsteem so far? Do you think Steem is better now or worse then what it was? Do you have a vision for Steem?
Your steem story is what makes it cool. Reminds me of the aussie battler. Most want to see the aussie battler win, even though we take the piss out of them every now and then lol.
It's better, All my votes since H21 have been manual and i just vote on what i like - usually. Will know in a few weeks how it all turns out, so far so good.
My vision, Its getting a lot closer to what i want. Bots confuse me. Prefer if everyone un-delegated and voted themselves.
Edit: After coming back and re -reading, this blog deserved a bigger vote then i gave. I have changed it a few times already so will leave it. lol
I have never used a bot in my life (you have changed your comment a few times). It's just wanted to mention that.
I'm happy to see you vision coming closer. I think it's a good thing what's happening now.
pa. Next time save your vote for someone else. I do well enough already on these posts.
thanks, bad habit of mine,
Although I don’t know if it’s most ideal when trending page is filled with all steem related content, but of all the steem talking vlogs, I like to watch yours the best.
When it comes to the trending page I think communities will go a long way making steemit.com better.
When we have car/photography/food (for example) communities on here and a good portal to them the trending pages in those communities will look much better and suited to the content of the community.
Right now we only have the Steem community. So it sorta makes sense that Steem content does well.
It will change in the future with communities. Because it has to for Steem to grow.
Thanks for saying that about my vlogs.
Agreed! Also with @joythewanderer!
Yeah I agree with you here @joythewanderer . I know through his blogs that he is heavily invested so he really does care about the state of the platform. I tend to go to his blogs myself if anything is going on . Some people have their sides and alot of bad blood from the past but I think @exyle is like most of us in here. Hoping the blockchain thrives.

I think compared to the "content creators" that constantly cash out, milk the cash cow, we need more new investors to come, and old investors to stay here.
Thanks for this post, I'm actually liking you a bit more now because of it.
People, myself included, like to judge others based on their actions without maybe knowing why they do the things they do. Even though I'm someone who has attempted in the past 3 years, even when I had no stake of my own and was controlling others through trails, to spread it as wide as possible. In hindsight, I am not so sure if that was the best method, sure I may have increased retention of some users and kept them going, but many of them have left because of the markets. So I kind of understand the concentration of stake, even though many would assume it's just so you yourself would make more during the old rules - as votetrading was pretty much the same as delegating to bid bots or self-voting shit 10x per day. In your case you at least providing some great content along with it (even if it was just one out of the two daily posts :P).
Anyway, not sure if you read my last comment, the muting part seemed to reflect on it, but I understand that too, often I wish I could just mute some users who do nothing but complain and bitch about everything and anything when the reality is that there is no other platform in existence as good as Steem and the current phase is too early to judge after the recent HF if the EIP has shown its full effect, until then we continue trying to improve on it while policing eachother a bit better which was something we could not do before.
Next time Steem pumps and another bear market hits, will there be as much complaints and people leaving as the last two? Or will they finally understand that there is nothing that can stop Steem so they better try to get their shit together and help out instead of constantly finding things to complain about.
Enjoyed the post.
I'm watching most of your videos on @threespeak and you've been one of my most consistent sources of information on Steem as I learn.
P.S. I powered up 1000 today transferred in from an exchange and hit Dolphin.
Thank you! And congrats on hitting dolphin!
That's fantastic, Brian. Great to see you digging in for the long haul.
I think the question comes up because you very much “built your blog” by participating in closed circle voting rings who many abuse the platform, while posting excessively to earn as much of those rewards as you could. Then with the new changes there seems to a constant post of you on trending talking about how great you curate .. when you are auto-voting that which you know will get you the largest returns (including those abusing the system). Which was a concern with the new curve and something that clearly would be a topic of discussion.
So to many.. that’s not curating, and doesn’t really deserve a pat on the back for you. If you want to vote them, awesome. Much better than spamming and self voting, but it’s not really something that should equate a post on how to curate well.
So the criticism you may be receiving is due to the conversations you are starting, and then your actions are not backing up.
Yes your SP working for you can be a great benefit, but it doesn’t mean that SP is a guaranteed roi and somehow give individuals the right to abuse it to ensure they get that roi. This is something that many stake holders, including many of those “friends” of yours are having to learn as things have changed.
I’m glad you are out there voting, I love what I am seeing with new changes and I appreciate your constant positive Steem message.. but you can’t expect to put something out there which was a concern, confirm its how you are making such a great return and then be upset that people criticize it. If you don’t want criticism, don’t post about it constantly.
Things have improved greatly, but we have a long way to go and there will be bumps along the way. Finding that balance will always take some time.
This is one of the things I love about Splinterlands.
When someone beats me and earns DEC, (an uncomfortably common occurrence) they're far more likely to reinvest that DEC on potions, orbs, cards on the market, etc; than to send it out to Steem-engine, sell for STEEMP, withdraw the STEEM and sell it on the market.
Gamers instinctively love re-investing in assets; and the longer the game is around and successful, and the higher the marketcap (we just passed $3 million) the more confidence they'll have in the value of those assets.
This is 100% true. I keep a close eye on the DEC spending to null. Last 7 days about 6,5 million was sent to null. Matches inflation almost perfectly.
I love the way you think!!!! I have adopted a very similar attitude re. content curation. Yes I have people on auto vote because I am not always around, but like you say... these are trusted content creators and I - like I am doing now haha... go back to my outgoing votes for the day, to have my say on their posts... if I have anything to say, which in this case - I do :)
I generally set my steem auto vote limit at 95% mana so that ticks away (at close to best) if I am not around but allows plenty of room for me to sit down and go on a manual curation binge which is what I love to to Mon-Fri :) - and that "mixing up" generally stirs the automated votes - because I manually break the cycle and not everybody posts at precisely the same time every day.
Definitely a fan of "after the fact". :)

for @exyle
H21/H22 is the best thing for the steem not according to me but everyone else also thinks about this. I stop working on steemit, I only read post every day but when the H21/H22 happed i thought and made my mind to start working here again. I can,t buy too much steem but I only bought 1k steem at this low price so i can earn more by curating. And after long time nearly 5 month I made a post on steemit and I earned nearly $7.7 vote on my post.
Now i think it is the best time to invest in steem and I believe the rate of steem will soon increase because everyone on this platform is trying to help this platform to grow. People are powering up.
and thank for for supporting the steemian with your steempower. You are doing a great job @exyle
I laughed really hard when I read the part about some slamming the door in your face as they left.
That said, I can attest to your curating efforts because I have had some big upvotes from you a few times.
I take this advice seriously and know that time and consistency will always pay off. Cheers!
Do you check the #introduceyourself tag sometimes :)
I strongly agree with your belief to Steem-ecosystem in the blockchain. Thank you for your posting!

It's your SP, your portion of the inflation, you are the one that should choose how it's spent, not someone else... I do something very similar myself, I autoupvote a lot of Steemians and try to shuffle around my votes to change or even to decrease % to allow more people inside the list as I power up more SP, ofc, always trying to keep the quality of the content that I reward to the best possible. I also leave some votes for manual curation for stuff that I see that I want to reward.

I bought approximately half of my 20K steem power and like you I actually see it as an investment to make grow.. I mean, without actually doing anything improper that could harm Steem.
But unlike you, the thing that makes me love#newsteem is exactly the pleasure of discover new talent, to support them with the hope that some whales in its turn can do the same. It's win win situation...Hello @exyle, this post is very interesting. In some ways I see a lot of myself in your experience here in Steem.
Good Sunday to you, too.
Just wanted to say that I enjoy your STEEM stats posts (I'm a geek and the details fascinate me). Particularly your posts about the state of STEEM distribution (liquid, vested, etc). I trade and find that valuable.
I'm more optimistic about Steem now than I was a few months ago. Mostly because I feel that the direction we're now taking is coinciding with thoughts I had for a while now.
I couldn't agree more with you.
... and so on, and so on
I am also in general positive about the #newsteem and hope it will soon thrive again in the next altcoin cycle or even before, but what I don't like so much about the new hardfork is the new rewards curve, which seems unfair now. You need to reach $5 per post to break even compared to the linear curve, and the vote value depends on the overall performance of a post now, which is a bit tricky.
I could quite happily just curate now, the STEEM return is obscene compared to before. However, I'm still drawn to writing.. that is why I'm here.
I still enjoy writing and vlogging too but I'm also happy that the pressure to do so is a little less under the new system.
You might think so, but I still have this compulsion to write. I wish it would go away TBH.
I admire that you are still going, got a lot of faith in this platform.
Just be prepared that it sinks further, and don't get to attach, I hope it works out for you but as I have seen, you are one of the converted.
Curation makes sense when you have a lot of Steem power and behavior on-chain won't influence Steem overall trend. It takes a change in those at the market. Altcoins are turning around, if Steem does not move, just be prepared to stomach further pain
and has received an upvote and a resteem to hopefully generate some ❤ extra love ❤ for your post!

Everyone changes with big forks and new steem. It's refreshing. I like your content and you are probably the only one who has made videos I've watched more than 1 of.
It does make more sense that people want to read about your thoughts on Steem given your experiences and stake. However, don't give up on other content. Just reading about Steem is boring. Maybe try a few different topics until you see what does well.
hello exile
I'm new here. but I started to see some of your posts and you really have a great job. Very good content congratulations
I love to manually curate, but, for the first time, since the five minute rule, I have put a couple on autovote and the rest I still manually curate.
I'm not sure I like all the changes, but, I am coming around to most and for all it's worth, I'm all in.
Steemin on!

Beautiful Sunday Goes Beachside @dswigle wrote lately about: Feel free to follow @dswigle if you like it :)
Sending tips with @tipU - how to guide :)
🎁 Hi @exyle! You have received 0.1 STEEM tip from @dswigle!I've set you on my auto upvote list purely to get maximum curation without having to compromise with the quality of the posts I upvote. I even earned 300% returns for my vote from some posts.
Usually I have been pretty honest and transparent around playing the steem game and I appreciate so are you. There's really no reason not to and I gotta agree, while I enjoy your talks about steem I really couldn't care less about your sushi trips or BBQ evening (no offense lol), actually I'm gonna refollow you again for that reason. So great move!
I too stepped up my game a bit and steem already prove it is worth it to put extra time into writing prober posts. By the way I saw your upvote on my recent post but at the same time a down vote from @3speak. Not that it matters too much given the success of the post but it did made me wonder what that was about. :)

Welcome back and congrats on your nice powerups and becoming an orca. Your post deserved an upvote and as it turns out it was one of the better manually curated post I clicked on.
ps. I don't know why 3speak did that. I'm a user of the platform, not an owner. I have no idea about their reasoning.
Thanks a lot. Ah I just saw you used 3speak so much that I almost thought you were part of their team. Anyways not something I'm gonna dig into was only cause I stumbled upon your post now.
Looking forward seeing more of your Steem content!
Cheers! :)

This was a really well written post. I personally don't believe that you need to explain yourself to anyone. It is awesome that you did though. I like what you said about supporting others. I think a lot of people get circle-jerking and growing together with a small group of people confused. I have a handful of Steemians that supported me as I was growing and I did likewise with them. Their content is always great and they write posts that I actually want to read because I feel I have come to know them over the years. Due to those facts, we pretty much always upvote each others posts. That doesn't mean we don't upvote other stuff too, but if helping them makes me a circle jerker then I guess, yes I am. I don't feel like what I am doing is a negative thing though. I totally understand about your posting habits changing, but I am really going to miss your BBQ ones! Do you feel like in the future there isn't going to be a place on Steem for personal blog posts like that? I feel like that is how Steemit started and it might be heading back that way. Just high quality technical content...
? Of course I like your pics of your father and friends but I myself had some personal stuff to go through so I didn't follow everything lately. But I think it's a bit more like vote for good content and get rewarded for that is better then writing for an hour or more a day. Also after such a great change you have to lay back and study the situation like the windows updates years back you allways wait for the bugs to clear them otherwise you would have your hands full on a organisation with failing computers. Blue screens etc.
