Hey Guys!

Last week I posted about my first week of intermittent fasting. I talked about some of the research and science behind intermittent fasting, and how my first experience had gone.

I was floored by how many people said they had either tried some form of fasting, or were interested in learning more about it. I want to say a big thanks to everyone who engaged on that post! It was so helpful to hear about your experiences. It was honestly pretty encouraging to see that so many of you had tried fasting with positive results.

If you want to check out my post from last week on Intermittent Fasting, I provide a bit more background on why i'm trying this, and what I hope to gain from it.

The 5:2 Plan - My Chosen Intermittent Fasting Style

There are many different types of Intermittent Fasting, but I have chosen to try the 5:2 Plan. This basically means that I eat normally five days a week - and then only eat 500 calories for two days of the week. Ideally, these will not be on consecutive days.

Also, ideally for me - they will not be on the weekends. Weekends are for brunch, good dinners and a glass of wine! (umm or two)

I thought that instead of just posting a vlog at the end of the week telling you how it went, I would actually take you along on the journey with me! I took video snapshots throughout the week to capture both the highs... and lows of intermittent fasting.

How Did My Body Feel this Week?

Overall, I was actually pretty impressed with how positively my body responded to the whole thing. I had a few moments where I really craved other comfort foods, but for the most part - I wasn't overly hungry. I was also careful to fast on days that I didn't' have any kind of social engagements. For example... fasting yesterday during the Superbowl would have been just plain mean! Me and my friends put together a pretty killer spread of pizza, wings, prawns, bean dip, salsa, meatballs, cookies and all sorts of game day snacks!

One thing that I learned is that even if I don't feel super hungry... I should still try to take in some protein on fasting days. One of the days I ate mostly just fruits and vegetables, and then was feeling it the next day.

Food Wins and Fails

In the post... I show me making carrot soup. I was SUPER happy with how this turned out! It was a simple recipe that ended up being very low calorie. I simply simmered a bunch of carrots with fresh onion, garlic, and ginger in a pot for a few hours with stock until the flavors had really permeated the dish. I then used an immersion blender to turn it into soup and added some salt, pepper, cumin and curry powder. A little garnish of cilantro... and it's ready!

To be honest, the soup was probably my best "food win" from the week. I was going to make cauliflower rice and some other fancy dishes, but I just ended up being too damn busy. Berry smoothies and rolled up lunch meat ended up being my saving grace this week!

Although I hope to have more beautiful and interesting dishes to share with you in the future... It just wasn't in me this week. :)

I hope that you guys enjoyed seeing my fasting journey this week! If you have any questions on intermittent fasting - please let me know and I'll do my best to help! Also, if you have any experience with fasting ... i'd love to hear about it! Big thanks to all of the amazing people who commented on my post last week detailing their experiences!

If you have any tips for me on what to do when you are craving nachos or sushi... i'm all ears! ;)

Aww @surfermarly, you are seriously awesome and just made my day!! Thank you so much for including me in your favorite D’tubers post!

When craving nachos or sushi, I just mix the two together, then suddenly I dont want either one!

Hahah i’m on a fasting day today and that LITERALLY helped. You’re just full of good advice today aren’t you?? 😆

Oh also, love your music. Let me know if you want to cover one of these songs that talks about gold and I’ll send you a Goldmoney T shirt :) https://steemit.com/valentinesday/@goldmatters/golden-slumbers-fill-your-eyes Hit me up on discord if you want one

Remind me if I ever meet you in person( maybe at Steemfest? I’m hoping to go this year!) to buy you a couple energy drinks and then pick your brain.

I would TOTALLY cover one of those songs for a T-shirt!! 😍 ( I would be happy to pay for the shipping charge, btw) Now to pick which one to sing... Goldmember is pretty tempting. 😆

After the cover is live, I’ll hit you up on discord to let you know. :-) I can probably record tomorrow.

Also, thanks for the monster vote on my open mic entry! That was very generous of you!

Fantastic!!! Don’t worry about shipping lol :) Look forward to hearing from you... and hearing the song :)

You should see me when ive had a couple energy drinks

I did fast through the superbowl and that was terrible! I am at the end of day 5 on an extended water fast. The longest I have done before was 7 and this time I really wanted to go longer, but my energy level is so low I don't think I can do it. I hear so many people say that after your body adjusts to running on ketone bodies that you feel fine, but that hasn't been the case for me yet. Why do you think you should eat protein on im-fasting days?

The no carb flu can be alleviated by upping your sodium intake. No joke.

When fasting, try to have about 13-14 grams of salt, and a potassium supplement. Fixes that ketone flu.

Oh interesting! Thanks for piping in with some helpful info @jdc.

Oh man... 5 days would be intense. For me, adding some lean protein in addition to the fruits and vegetables helps keep my energy level is high throughout the day. It might be different for every person, but that seems to work well for me.

How often do you do extended fast like this?

@coruscate, there is this guy in Atlanta (Dr. Joe Esposito) who does intermittent fasting. His version of it is pretty simple: "It takes about eight hours for your body to utilize the food that's in your system after that the body starts to burn fat."

So basically anything after eight hours, your body is working for you. I have tried this once and it was surprisingly easy and kind of became a game of sorts. If you stop eating around 7 pm, your eight hours is over while you sleep. I would then not eat until after a morning workout. I extended hours with little effort. During the times where you can eat, you eat well. If you stay away from the things you know you shouldn't eat, this method does wonders for the mindset.

Thanks so much for the thoughtful reply! I will have to check out the work of the doctor in Atlanta. :-) also, it’s great to hear that you have seen such positive benefits from fasting! I am thinking about trying more of the windows of eating, instead of the 5:2 plan.

you are very pretty. To be honest I am kinda jealous

Wow i would to try this kind of diet method.. i hope it would be efdective for my body type.. but many of my friends told me about this kind of diet and they have a good result on it.. i really need to try this for my health cause i gain a little weight this past weeks.

Haven’t we all gained a little weight since the holidays? 😉 I would definitely recommend doing your research before trying out intermittent fasting. Most people that I know who tried it have seen positive results, but it may not be right for everyone.

That's not a real IF diet. In post time u shouldn't drink ANYTHING instead of water. Large amounts of water to stop hunger. The thing is to fit the caloric demand into a small time.
It does not matter which the version of the IF diet u choose. When you make exceptions to your diet, it's not a real diet anymore. Why anyone should start that diet? Well, to make themself more healthy, to lost some weight in a healthy way. For sure ~300kcal per day isn't the healthier way.

Thanks for your comment. It sounds as though you may have experimented with limiting your windows of eating. The 5:2 plan is another popular form of intermittent fasting, and one that works better with my lifestyle. :-) I provide some helpful resources and information in my initial fasting post, which I link to above. Feel free to check it out if you are interested in learning more about it.

It's not fasting unless you hold yourself to a eating window really. What you're doing (assuming you aren't holding to a feeding window) is a calorie restriction diet. Which is also incredibly beneficial.

Either way, kudos! Following! And i loved your Delilah cover.

I’m glad you enjoyed the Delilah cover! I think you made a great point about how the 5:2 plan is not technically fasting because I am still eating throughout the day. I wonder why it is so commonly referred to as a form of intermittent fasting then?

I actually tried a window of eating fast yesterday, and it went really well! I did a 20 hour water fast. I had dinner around 4 PM the day before and then had lunch at noon the next day. I might experiment with this form of fasting more, but seems like I would need to do it most days of the week to really see much benefit from it.

Thanks again for chiming in with some knowledgeable advice!

The nutrition world has been off some interest to me since '07. So I've accumulated a fair bit of 'good' observances. After my birthday at the end of the month I'm going to be doing a 30 water fast (well, water, tea, and coffee fast) to finally get rid of my abdominal fat. Thirty days or cut abs is the finish line.
