What if the last person on earth was the one you hated most?

Now

A star migrating across the sky caught her attention. It did not twinkle; she determined it must be a satellite. Inwardly grateful for a respite from the deepening wormhole of her emotional turmoil, she considered this piece of machinery. How long would it continue on its meandering path before parts failed and it simply fell out of the sky?

If her memory served her correctly, she believed it was created to orbit for something like 200 years. Then what? Would it really just fall to Earth? And how long had it been rotating already?

Good thing there were no more children left. They would want to know the answers to things like this. I could always make things up she thought, who would argue? I would become the All Seeing All Knowing One to Be Respected. She smiled at that. If there were kids around she could totally put herself in a place of wisdom. They would look up to her for answers and reassurance and hope. But then nature or machinery would probably prove me wrong and I’d be a laughingstock. Shunned by the munchkin community she laughed out loud.

It was times like this she wished she had a dog. A companion to talk through the nights with. To tell these deep thoughts to- even if the only response was a pair of loyal eyes…

At least she would not be alone.

Alone is the worst thing of all.

Unless you're alone with the enemy.

Death was probably better. Than both of those...

The scrape of spoon steel on tin grated her already irritated nerves. Ever since she had spotted him the boring and mundane was soaked with urgency and anxiety. She had almost cut herself while opening tonight's dinner can with her Big Knife. This was not good. She was always careful, no matter what she was doing. There were no more doctors and hospitals so even a small scrape could make a premature ending miserable.

She considered this. She was considering anything to play keep away from the real threat. The threat that would haunt her and make sleep impossible.

HOW is he alive? The thought tiptoed in, all sneaky in its intensity. Considering how careful I have come to be, even just knowing he is somewhat near is wrecking my entire life. She vigorously shook him out of her head.

Her nightly routine was like her daily routine: always the same. She located a hidden area, the uglier the better. If it looked inviting to her, her instincts suggested it might to others, too, if there were any stragglers left.

She believed in alien life. “One would have to be awfully egotistical to think Earthlings are the only intelligent life forms in this vast universe,” she had once told some lunch mates. She felt the same way about the Earth now. There has to be other survivors. She couldn’t be the only one.

Could she?

She had imagined meeting other people. Played the scenario in her mind like a film during the monotonous days, and even more during the lonely nights. They would come across each other and be wary and vigilant at first, but soon warm up and find they would do well by banding together and forming a community. They would find a beautiful place with an abundance of resources and finally stop wandering, trading random migration for gardening, breeding livestock, and settling down.

The last person she ever wanted to see was now the only person she had seen in months, and the last person she ever wanted to spend time thinking about, period.

How’s that for ironic. What are the odds?

She wished that she still knew she was alone. Anything but having to think about him and all the pain he left in his wake…

She had a long day with many miles tomorrow. She settled in but it took a long time to drift into a fitful sleep.

If the only person left will be the one I hared most......hmmmmm maybe it's time for forgiveness... 😊❤️❤️❤️

Tough decision ;)

Just wait... There's twists

:)

Can't wait 😊❤️

Oh common! You didn't tell us anything! :)
Who is he? What did he do to her? Why? ... so many questions and that just proves that you captured my intention, got me engaged and left me wanting for more. Good job! I can't wait to read the next part.

Lol! So happy to hear that :)

I like the progression! Still a strange element of mystery to who this man is and at the same time the mystery of who she is and what she is capable of.

The introduction of a possible alien entity is exciting as well as the satellite. Could there be an organization playing overwatch with the whole planet? So many great thought-provoking questions in the writing. You are building up some suspense well, the lonely anxious atmosphere is definitely set.

Nailed it!

Glad you are enjoying it <3

I'm enjoying this ... suspense is in the air. So many questions yet unanswered ... nice! I'm looking forward to the next part.

What a quandary you have put your dear character in. You've set up quite the story line. Can't wait for more.
