Recipe for Homemade Hummus (Hommos), Chickpeas Dip

in #food8 years ago (edited)

This recipe is not a copy/paste recipe, It's a recipe inherited and improved upon over many many years.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cans of 15.5 Oz Chick Peas

  • 1 teaspoon Baking Soda

  • 4 table spoons of Tahina Sauce ( Sesame seeds sauce)

  • 1 Lemon Juiced and drained

  • 1 teaspoon of salt (kosher or regular salt)

You will also need a saucepan to boil the chick Peas and any counter-top Food Processor:

Preparation:

Empty contents of the two Chick Peas cans into the saucepan, add 1 teaspoon of baking soda and mix well.
Add 2 cups of water and Put the saucepan on medium fire for about 45 minutes, till the Peas are soft and can be crushed with fingers without any resistance.

When the peas are ready drain well and put in the counter top food processor/mixer and add the rest of the ingredients, mix on high for a few minutes adding 1 ice cube every 30 seconds till the mix is white and soft.
Do not add more than a dozen ice cubes.

Taste the soft mix with a small spoon, add more lemon juice if needed. (According to taste)

Empty the contents in a glass plate and top with some olive oil, paprika, fresh parsley, or freshly sliced pickles.
These toppings are not essential, you can add any topping you like. I add cayenne pepper to mine.

You can store your Hummus up-to five days in the fridge inside a sealed plastic container. If you are planning to eat it all the same day, you can add 1 clove of garlic to the ingredients, do not add the garlic if you plan to store it in the fridge.

Enjoy

Hummus and falafel - my best friends. Love it with hot Indian pickles (mango and nut again - very, very hot!)

Great!

We Arabs have hummus and falafel multiple times a week. The tradition is that each friday, all families have hummus for breakfast, along with falafel (must be hot and crunchy!), broad bean hummus, fatteh, and certainly tea!

I have a nice Falafel recipe but it takes for ever to prepare, I always opt to buy it at the restaurant because it's easier that way and not that expensive. A dozen go for about $3 US dollars, a great price and no need to mess with hot oil, and prep time at home.

I love Hummus, I really should try this. Thank you for the recipe

you won't be disappointed. This recipe is guaranteed to give you the best hummus.

That sounds AWESOME! Thanks for the idea. What kind of dipping ideas do you have?

I love hummus!!!

I would add some cummin.

cumin is too strong of a spice for hummus, maybe a sprinkle at the top., other than that the cumin flavor will take over. Cumin is a better match for Fava beans mix.

Never tried hummus, but love chickpeas and looks yummy.

The tastiest thing on earth =)
Had some 2 days ago in a Jewsih restaraunt (they bring it from israel)

Try this recipe and you will know nothing tastes like fresh homemade hummus.

Oh my!! My favorite food, I like to do it, but my blender haven't work so much and needs more power))and I never use a baking soda, it's interesting info

Actually baking soda will soften the chick peas enough that your blender will not have hard time in the process, you can also replace the ice cubes with ice cold water if your blender power is low.

This is great! I always eat my hummus from the store way too fast, so now I can make bigger batches!

Thank you for the recipe, I have never made hummus but it looks super easy!
