Tastes like chicken?

in #food7 years ago

How often have you heard that some exotic animal 'tastes like chicken'? If so, then why bother eating it? I do wonder at why some people are so dedicated at eating meat. Is it partly about domination over the animal kingdom? I appreciate that taste plays a part, but there are so many other flavours out there.

I gave up eating meat about 25 years ago for various reasons that included the animal cruelty that is involved in farming. Since then there have been many food scares around meat as well as the ongoing use of antibiotics and genetic modification (in some countries). I don't really miss meat and I think I have a pretty good diet. I'll say that I do still eat some fish, eggs and dairy as a personal choice. This isn't a religion. I know some veggies are not interested in meat substitutes, but they must play a big part in weaning people away from meat. There wasn't much choice when I gave it up, but now there are lots and many are using Quorn. This is based on a fungus. This article goes on about how it is a highly processed food, but then so are a lot of things we eat for taste and convenience. Most Quorn is not vegan as it contains egg products.

Quorn

We eat a fair bit of Quorn in our house. Most of it is sold as a meat substitute and tends to name the meat (chicken, beef, bacon). I think you could give some of it to most people and they wouldn't notice if it was cooked in a meal such as a curry. I have this 'chicken' in my sandwiches.

We use their mince and chunks in some of our meals. They also do various burgers and other convenience food. We also have other veggie products that don't use Quorn. Some of our meals are made from raw ingredients too. It is largely a matter of convenience. We both work and don't want to spend too much time cooking. We're just not that into it.

The scale of animal farming these days is not very sustainable. People eat far more meat than previous generations. Animals require masses of resources including land, water and chemicals. We may have to make more use of grown products that may include meat grown from cells, insects and other sources of protein to feed a growing population.

I don't expect everyone to change, but I think we should all think about the effects we have on the world. I'm by no means perfect.

Eat, drink and be merry.

We use a lot of these for my daughter, she's not keen on the mince and chunks but loves the nuggets, scotch eggs, sliced meats and mini sausages :) Quorn now sell vegan products :) Oh her favourite is the vegan fish fingers :)

Vegan fish fingers? I'm going to have to try those!
I had a truly horrible meal in Leon tonight: Korean Chicken Burger and something called baked potatoes which looked like re-constituted potato waffles. It didn't taste like chicken and I don't know what made it Korean but it was a great advertisement for vegetarian eating.

Doesn't sound very appetising at all,
The fish fingers are frozen, she loves them

My daughter usually has a serving of ketchup for dipping.

Like you we still eat cheese and eggs and occasional fish, very rarely meat as I am very focused on provinence (grew up on a farm). Most meat is not a happy business.

I've been vegan for 5 days now. Not long I know, but I'm really happy with it so far. The transition from being vegetarian has been easier than expected.

Some of our meals are vegan. My kids have been brought up on the same diet and seem healthy. My son made the choice to have meat sometimes at 16.

That's interesting. Like your kids I was also raised as a vegetarian but never had an urge to eat meat. What made him decide to start eating it?

I think it's down to making life easier when he visits or goes out with friends. He doesn't have it that much and it's his choice

Quorn is pretty versatile and easy to prepare. I think I first discovered it during an early pescatarian phase of mine, early 90s when in the Netherlands.

Since both Quorn and Tofu have become regular staples in my food, although I admit that recently I’ve started looking more and more into plant based diets.

Not out of religion or anything but microplastics are starting to worry me. Because I’m not hunting for a purely vegan diet, Quorn will continue to be a regular one but it’s frequency will decrease because I’m exploring new things. Like beetroot based "steak", also mushroom steak, etc.

I just need to find a way to continue my yogurt addiction without always more carbon being farted in our atmosphere. No, I didnt say I fart a lot.

Convenience is a factor. When we have time we do more proper cooking

I am somewhat interested in meat substitutes as i have been flirting with the idea of being vegetarian though i hear that a lot of soy products come from a genetically modified crops so i really don't know what to think, i too think the cruelty in farming animals needs to come to an end or start trending downwards at the least...

Most things are a compromise unless you can grow it all yourself. The veggie stuff is often more expensive than meat

It is a difficult one as money and ethics rarely see eye to eye...

It's a good subject @steevc It is a personal choice to eat vegetarian food and avoid meat.. but we must balance our nutrition and compensate the animal proteins

I think it's easier these days to find alternatives. We don't need meat

yes you right @steevc i have worked on one of the new food products liquid, developed to compensate the meat, rich in proteins and essential amino acids,

Many people eat without knowing the consequences that may arise in the future in health and in the environment, because of the food they eat. In my opinion, we must inform ourselves about the products we consume, since well-planned vegetarian diets are rich in proteins and vitamins, and low in fat and calories. It is interesting the information about these products Quorn

it is true .. sometimes we see how to kill animals not in a way pri zeru .. therefore sometimes feel sorry for the animal so more tends choose not to eat it.
but from one side of the value is good even we belong to the human who has good faith in animals,
.but different religions like the father said earlier .. of the many religions there are ways of annihilation using the way slaughtered first, but the way it is painful, but the way it's one wise step to kill animals, and there are some that turn off directly to the kitchen or burned alive life..this is very sadistic .. thank you sir ...let's share your opinion
