Vegan alternatives to traditional foods are a useful stepping stone for us to use as we shift away from a lifestyle of exploitation of other beings, into a lifestyle of balance and non-exploitation. While it is usually far healthier to produce your own meals from fresh ingredients from known organic sources, it is also practical in some situations to make use of the more ethical food products available in supermarkets too. Here I am reviewing 'vegan schnitzel' from the 'Fry's Family' range out of South Africa.*
I had previously tried out Fry's vegan sausages and also their falafel burger and found that while they don't match the quality of home made food, they are among the best that I have found for pre-packaged, processed foods of this kind. Their sausages are the closest to animal based sausages that I have found - so there's a tip if you are looking for a way to get a sausage fan to become vegan ;)
Here's a nice video from the Fry family explaining their story of how they switched from 'farming' animals to making vegan food:
Schnitzels!
These are simply a layer of meat substitute made of soya protein and various starches, thickened and spiced to flavor - then covered in breadcrumb: http://www.fryfamilyfood.com/au/golden-crumbed-schnitzels/
Ingredients
Crumb (15 %) [Wheat flour (Gluten)]
Vegetable Protein (13 %) [Soya · Wheat (Gluten)]
Vegetable oil (Sunflower seed)
Potato starch
Maize starch
Flavourings
Thickener (Cellulose extract)
Sea Salt
Spices (contains: Sulphites)
Onion
Mustard
Colour: Caramel Red iron oxide.
Cooking
They are really easy and quick to cook - just 12-13 minutes in the oven and they're done.
I chose to use some organic pitta bread and local salad ingredients to create a schnitzel party package! It was really easy to make and there's not many dinner dishes I can think of that are easier.
The Results
I don't generally expect much from processed, supermarket food - but Fry's usually manage to produce products that are just good enough for me to use them in a pinch. These Schnitzels taste fine and although they are nothing special, what they don't have is the nasty/cheap, low quality ingredients that make it obvious that you are eating a factory made food. They would definitely be fine for parties where vegan options are needed and might just help someone who is intimidated by switching to a plant based diet to take an important step in that direction by first eliminating meat and then taking the time to learn more about plants, so as to find the ones that are ideal for that individual.

Good advice, @ura-soul! It is interesting to know all the alternatives that are available now to switch and maintain a vegan diet. In our experience, initially we considered that carrying a vegan diet was very difficult, although our appreciation and respect for animal life continued to motivate us to maintain it. Later we learned recipes and learned more about plants, so it all got easier. Sometimes the options are still a little bit limited (for example, during a trip or in meetings with friends), but we have also learned to cope... and your post was very useful. The well-being of animals is our greatest motivation. That is why we recently started our @letsteamup project, with which we intend to give anyone the opportunity to contribute to animal welfare using Steemit. We would be very glad to receive your comments about our initiative, since we can see you share our love and respect for animals. Thanks for sharing this food option and your experience trying it! We’ll stay tuned to your next posts!
Thanks - yes, eating with other people can be difficult due to the lack of understanding in society of how to create balance. It helps to understand that in a radically out of balance society, our actions to cause balance may appear to be 'radical' - but in reality that's a bit backwards.
Health of both humans and animals are at stake here - it's important not to devalue the humans just because we love animals and so many humans are out of balance. ;)
I followed your profile here - thanks for assisting!
Totally agree :) Empathy for all living beings is what we need to live in harmony and to be genuinely happy. Thanks for your response!
Looks really good! Just stepping by to ad that vegan food is not only us stepping away from exploiting animals but also moving towards a more sustainable future for our planet because of how much ecologically friendly it is. Yum!
