"This is a record." His father took the large disc away and lifted the arm of the phonograph. "We used to call them vinyls. And this man..."
He swung the arm back over the disc and lowered the needle in place. An amplified scratch roared through the old speakers as the needle scraped across several peaks. "He was one of my favorites."
"... could you help me place this call." The low voice of a gruff man bellowed. His father adjusted the speed, volume, and tone with a few knobs. "You see the number on the matchbook is old and faded."
"Who is he, Dad?"
"Jim Croce, son. And he left this life far, far too soon."
"She's livin' in L.A. with my best old ex-friend Ray. A guy she said she knew well and sometimes hated..."

Day 349: 5 Minute Freewrite: Thursday - Prompt: running in place
I love this! Jim rocked and this freewrite took me way back to another time.
Aw, love the photo, love the man, love the story!
You pack a lot of feeling into a very few words. I could take lessons!
He was in San Diego and his widow started a bunch of restaurants - maybe they did together. I am a bit foggy on that. Only remember that he died way too young.
Jim and his widow had dinner at a restaurant in San Diego a few days before he died. Croce's opened later, then closed, and now she has a new restaurant north of the city.
Thank you for the clarification. I had seen a documentary on him and the family and all.
