Very late to this one, but just under the 24 hours! Here is my 5-minute freewrite, managed to cut myself off on 4:55 just before I started something I couldn't finish!
Thank you very much! Here we have it:
Overslept
She had overslept. In a way, she had wanted to.
She couldn’t face getting up any more. Every day was just a little bit more, it was all too much.
She started at the clock, flashing violently 11:00. She was a heavy sleeper, but she had really done it this time. Her shift had started at 9:00, she would have some explaining to do.
She wondered why she put herself through it. The creative reasoning, the extra work she came in to. She had blamed public transport already this week, she needed something a bit more inventive.
For once, life would provide her with a very good excuse. She had staggered into her trousers as she pulled on her tshirt. It hadn’t taken her long to get out of the house.
Her entire street was full of stationary abandoned vehicles. There was not a single person in sight.
Silence echoed through the housing complex, not a single engine revved in the background. There was no trace of the people, who had fled in the early hours.
She had slept through the sirens, the megaphone announcements. She had missed the evacuation entirely.
She smelt the distant hint of burning, and scanning the horizon, saw a billowing black tower of smoke dominating the city skyline.
Oh wow. she is a deep sleeper indeed!!! And for us on the west coast - so close to reality...
