The rodent with the worst reputation due to its ability to thrive has only humanity to blame for its place found amongst civilization, the rat!
What would a rat be doing with out human waste to live off of? It is the first thing we think about when faced with one, what garbage has it been in? What diseases does it carry?
Yet I find myself wondering what would the rats life on earth look like without humans?
Yea the rat is a scavenger but so are many other rodents but what makes them different is an attraction to rotting food which has been learned over time to be an easy food source. The rat is attracted to our waste and as a species humans are the worst for creating these attractions. We have taught rats that it’s easier to live beside humans than else where and through their genetic memory we see an outcome where we have created our own rodent problems!
What would the rat be doing without humans though? Much as they are now with less disease and smaller populations, most importantly it would not have traveled the world! Native to Asia the rat has traveled along with our discovery of other continents and creation of world trade, without this the rat would have remained in Asia. The rat would have continued being a nuance to the local people as this is where the behaviour was first learned.
Without human influence at all we see a rat that requires much more time and effort spent scavenging to maintain its high metabolism. Species growth rate is drastically slowed yet the rat has a critical roll to play as food source for predators. The rat adds much more than it takes away say it was in the wild, breakdown of waste into nutrients for plants while also being a food source for larger predators.
The Rat Is Simply A Human Companion!!!
