As the gnarled trees of the burning forest give way to the desert wastes, Simon is reminded of how fascinated everyone had been when the horns had first appeared.
“It is a plague,” Vatti, his lead council, had advised. And he’d listened.
A cool wind rushes over the water. His council. now a snake, slithers up alongside his arm at the helm of this ship.
“The third awaits,”Vatti intones, and in spite of himself, Simon still listens. No perfect guide out of the underworld. Only dried bones and long abandoned cobwebs. The desert unfolds before them like a devouring spirit.
