Our livestock is dying. The outback's red is drying up; cracking and peeling away. There's a farmer somewhere, his foggy blue eyes scanning the dry horizon.
He watches each day unfold before him, desperately awaiting the overdue rain. Usually he'd wait for the rain with beads of sweat dripping down his back while flies invaded his face. Starring as the sun began its evening dance of orange and ember, transparent waves of heat would dance above the horizon.
But no. It's cold now. Dirty overalls hang inside on the clothes line, crops freeze in the morning.
There's not a drop of rain in sight. The August air is icy yet dry. He's about to shoot his last scrawny sheep. The winter rain is gone, our farmers are helpless.

I'm typically a slow, self-critical writer. Nonetheless, Here is my first attempt at @MarianneWest's daily five minute free write prompt. Please let me know what you think below.
Yours,
Jordan.
I've only been doing the freewrite for about a week now, so welcome and no worries on the slow or self-critical part. I think most of us are a little critical of our writing and in my case, fat stubby fingers make me slow. It's been good though.
I think the story you've told flows really well, and gives a great sense of the helplessness the farmer feels from the drought. Informative and descriptive at the same time, which isn't the easiest of tasks.
Hey @jordan.white306. This is very well written and topical with our farmers in Aus suffering at the moment. Welcome to the #freewrite community and I look forward to seeing more from you.

Thanks Jon! I wasn't sure what to write and had just finished reading about Aussie farmers suffering so I tried to write from a farmer's perspective. It'll be interesting to see if I can improve how much I write within a 5 minute time frame with more practice.
I read your 5 minute free writes often. You're truly one main of the reasons that influenced me to give this a shot.
Thanks for saying that jordan, it means a lot. If you run out of time but still have more to say, keep writing. The best thing with #freewrite's is its not a competition so no one cares if you bend the rules a bit. Most of mine lately have taken well over 5 mins.
