Dog Breath
She didn't want to get out of bed. It just felt like a day not worth the effort. She turned on her side and that made it worse. He would always be there waiting for her to turn. She'd pretend she was still asleep and he'd slobber all over her. Dog breath and all. It was disgusting and she loved it. It was better than an alarm clock.
The phone rang. It was her bestie. She had to answer even though she didn't want to talk to anyone. But she knew him too well. If she didn't pick up, he'd turn up at her house and he wasn't even in the same country.
"Hey you"
"Hey...."
"How you holding up? Are you going to work today?"
"I don't know. I don't want to have to be nice and answer the same questions of 'how you're doing' and 'condolences' blah blah blah..."
"Then don't go."
"I can't. I have some clients coming in to present an idea. The clients are flying in just for this meet up. Gaaaahhhhh.... I'll go. I better get ready. Call you later."
She was going to mourn for a week. Maybe a month. She wore all black. As expected colleagues were wishing her, some hugged her, some were awkward, some even bored. Yeah, she could tell. Wait til appraisal next week. You will have the expression karma in your face, you bitch.
She finally made it into the boardroom, and closed the door. They'd be ushered in at any moment. She wiped her tear and tried to think of something else to stop the hurt. She took a deep breath. Mr Aloo Gobby had been with her for 15 years.. He was a Husky Golden Retriever for her 21st birthday to mark her official entry to adulthood. Her friends did it as a joke and also to help their breeder friend because the puppy had a kink in his tail and he couldn't sell it. They thought it'd be perfect because she needed to start adulting they said.
Initially her mum helped her take care of him. Mum was more than happy to since she was in cahoots with her friends on this terrible idea. But when she got her dream job in Australia, she knew, she had fallen in love with Gobby. Her mum offered to take care of him but she couldn't leave him behind. But he left her behind on Friday.
He had been sick for awhile and she had to make that decision of putting him to sleep. It was the hardest thing she'd ever done. Harder even than moving to a new country where she didn't know anyone. She was hurting so bad she couldn't even eat. People around her didn't get it. They thought she was being over emotional, dramatic. He's just a dog they said. One even suggested getting a puppy. Did they think he was a ball point pen? The ink had run out? Get another?
Her guests finally arrived. And they introduced themselves to her. Stephen Lee whipped out his tablet to run through some slides. HIs screen saver was a Husky Golden Retriever. That did it! She let the flood gates open and bawled like a baby.
"The End! Now you have to go to sleep, honey!"
"But how did Daddy propose?"
"That we save for tomorrow. Good night babies.'
She kissed them on the cheek and left the room. She had told that story so many times to little Timmy and Kelly, she's sure they'd probably tell it better than her now.

Thank you @mdsohagm
A sad story with which I can identify. We had to get our 14 year old collie put to sleep some years ago and I was disconsolate for weeks.
