"There's nothing to do" he said as he finished chewing breakfast. "As much as I try to swallow them down, I don't like hardboiled minds."
"I agree with you" Squiliph nodded solemnly at the other end of the table. "It can be annoying to find one, especially at an elegant dinner, when you can't turn a blind eye or try to avoid it."
"Exact!" Pulpaul became excited, waving his fork in the air. "You can't do anything but sit there and suffer, there's no way to avoid it without offending at least half a dozen guests and the owners. But I ask myself: why do they have to be there? With so much minds around, just a hard-boiled mind must be put at the table?"
"I sometimes thought that they did it on purpose, you know" Squiliph said. "You know... to have a laugh while the guests make smiles of circumstance and are forced to swallow all that stuff. You know, to show that they have the power to keep you with your ass glued to the chair, undergoing that."
"If only I was sophisticated! Instead, almost everything is fine for me" concluded Pulpaul, wiping his mouth with the napkin. "You can give me a soft-boiled mind, a fried mind, a poached mind, an excellent scrambled mind like this we have just finished, but just a hardboiled mind... inedible!"
"Do you know what? No... forget it, it's up to me to pay this time." Squiliph put his hand to his wallet and smiled with a complicity smile. "One day we'll have a couple of fresh, raw minds, like that... just done! I know a little place... you'll see!"
"What a delight!"

Avvertenza: purtroppo non è possibile mantenere in italiano lo stesso doppio senso di hardboiled mind che si crea in inglese. L'espressione indica una mentalità rigida e insensibile, ma hardboiled significa "sodo", come hardboiled eggs, "uova sode". La versione italiana del mio piccolo racconto, perciò, perde molto del suo perché.
"Non c'è niente da fare" disse mentre finiva di masticare la colazione. "Per quanto mi sforzi di mandarle giù, non mi piacciono le menti sode."
"Ti capisco" annuì Squiliph solennemente all'altro capo del tavolino. "Può essere fastidioso trovarne una, specialmente a una cena elegante, quando non puoi far finta di niente o cercare di evitarla."
"Esatto!" Pulpaul si infervorò, agitando la forchetta in aria. "Non puoi fare altro che stare lì seduto e subire, non c'è modo di evitare la cosa senza offendere almeno una mezza dozzina di invitati e i padroni di casa. Ma io mi chiedo: perché bisogna per forza che ci siano? Con tutti i cervelli che ci sono, proprio una mente soda bisogna mettere a tavola?"
"Ho anche pensato che lo facessero apposta, sai" disse Squiliph. "Sai... per farsi due risate mentre gli ospiti fanno sorrisi di circostanza e sono costretti a mandare giù tutta quella roba. Sai, per dimostrare che hanno il potere di tenerti con il culo incollato alla sedia a subire."
"Poi, fossi io ad essere sofisticato! Invece, mi va bene quasi tutto" concluse Pulpaul pulendosi la bocca con il tovagliolo. "Puoi darmi mente alla coque, mente all'occhio, mente in camicia, un'ottima mente strapazzata come questa che abbiamo appena finito, ma proprio una mente soda...immangiabile!"
"Sai una cosa? No...lascia, tocca a me pagare stavolta." Squiliph mise mano al portafoglio e sorrise con fare complice. "Un giorno di questi ci facciamo un paio di menti fresche al guscio, così... appena fatte! Conosco un posticino... vedrai!"
"Che delizia!"
