This is a freewrite following the weekend prompts starting with this one
Here she was, Amy Gerstein, over by the pool, kissing my father. He looked as if lightning was striking him. His ears were turning red and it was as if he was trying to run away as far as he could go. Or sink into the ground. He was so embarrassed as the elderly ladies around him stopped talking and gave him their full attention. What a sight!! A middle-aged man and this obviously very young woman - hehe - a girl -kissing in the middle of the poolside lounging area.
If they only knew that I had a bet going with Amy. She told me that she will kiss my dad if I give her $ 10. I never ever thought that she would go through with it. That just takes a lot of guts!! He is such a shy and reserved man and always concerned about what the neighbors might be saying about him.
Well, usually it is about me. What will the neighbors say about your hair, your friends, your music coming out of the house? You pick. Even my dog doesn’t seem to be good enough for the neighbors. Or is it that I am supposed to pick up the poop or something like that. Anyways, nagging, nagging, nagging.
On the following Friday, we packed our bags and planned our escape. We, Amy and I, we are in big trouble with her parents and with mine.
Grounded - they said. You are grounded. Think about what you just did. This was embarrassing. If you were a bit younger, you would be spanked - well, that is kind of what they were saying. Not sure.
But no music!! No internet!! What??? Are they crazy! Hah. We were allowed to go to school. Dang. It would have been nice to be grounded and not have to go to school. I hate school. Nothing makes sense. Well, okay. 2 + 2 is 4 and such. That makes sense. But what are we learning this for? I don't need it. Latin. Nobody speaks Latin anymore. Maybe some nerds. But I am not now- and never will- hang out with nerds. So, no Latin needed for this boy. I will speak English and that is it and that is fine by me. And math doesn't make any sense either. Amy feels the same way. Her parents are a lot like mine. Do this, wear this and whatever you are and whatever you say is just not right. “That is not how we are acting’” they say.
Hah. They probably don't mind that we are gone. We promised each other to meet after school without bags right behind the gym.
That is when we noticed the stain on the wall. The building was new and the walls were whitewashed everywhere else. Besides that stain. “What color do you think this is, Amy?"
"No idea, I have never seen a green like this before”.
Amy was reaching out to touch the stain, but I jerked her hand back. I have seen Ghostbusters and all the green slime. Yes, unlikely to see ghosts here, in our boring neighborhood. Why are we still here? We were supposed to be on our way. But what is this stain doing here? So weird. For some reason, we can't just leave it and as we are watching, something trickles down into the grass on the bottom of the wall.
We are watching as in front of our eyes the green grass turns brown and shrinks - almost like it is burned - not by fire but by the sun. I have seen plants shrinking and leaves just falling off. As we are still trying to figure out what has happened to the grass, more and more liquid seems to be spilling. It feels like there is a spring bursting out of the wall.
