I had a similar situation when I moved from Florida. We bought the house in 1999, and I gardened there from our split until moving to Tennessee in 2011, leaving it with an established rare plant garden and food forest, including lots of chayas, and the two best pink grapefruit trees ever. I wish I knew their variety, because there were sweet and delicious, and were already mature and bearing when we bought the place.
From what I've been told, and witnessed the one time I've been back since, they ripped out the majority of the plants, never even realizing what they had. Sad.
