Cynthia wrung her hands nervously as she waited at the front of the lecture hall. She avoided meeting Professor Galesby's stern gaze as he considered her fate. She tried not to appear nervous, but it was difficult given the circumstances. She knew she had made a mistake and Professor Galesby was not known for leniency.
"I would very much like to address the elephant in the room," he said sternly.
She winced slightly at the tone of his voice, but reluctantly looked at the elephant standing idly near the podium. At least it didn't appear to be a particularly aggressive animal.
"It was a mistake," she answered. "I misheard the instructions and wrote a spell to summon a pachyderm instead of a painted fern."
The professor sighed wearily and rubbed his face. Cynthia shifted anxiously and hoped this wouldn't result in automatic failure of the class. She needed to pass this class in order to graduate on time.
"And this," he said, gesturing at the elephant, "is why I stress the importance of verifying information before you follow through with a spell. What in the world are we going to do with an elephant?!"
Cynthia bit her lip slightly to keep from suggesting that they feed it the ferns that her classmates summoned.

Thank you! :-)
O interesting.
I guess they’ll learn to magic elephants away next.
Amazing! I love how you played with "elephant in the room" saying and made it literal. This was the best elephant story I've read so far.
I am the ghost of Christmas Past which is why I'm late delivering today's freewrite prompt!
