Ahh..the many wonderful nuances of "Dude". I'm happy to hear that you don't strictly reserve it for males, my friend and I (both female) start every phone conversation with, "Duuuuudde"!

It's used more as a term to get someone's attention. Like a "hey" or a "yo".
