Quick Facts
- Free - The best price.
- A fan recreation of Goldeneye for the N64 on Valve's Source engine.
- Recommended max players: 16
- Originally released in 2005, Goldeneye: Source is STILL being actively developed (as of 2017)
Pros
- Again, it's free, so nothing to stop you from giving it a test drive
- It captures the essence of the original Goldeneye for the N64 surprisingly well.
- Supports custom dedicated servers
- Running on the source engine means that you can make your own maps using Valve's SDK
- The soundtrack is true to the original and really gets the nostalgia going.
Cons
- Somewhat difficult to install. You have to have Steam, a Steam account, and have "Source SDK Base 2007" installed. (All still free of course)
- The game is multiplayer only, no single-player (Unless you like playing multiplayer maps all by yourself (Bots are experimental))
- While not technically impossible with the right adapter, playing with a N64 controller isn't a likely scenario, so it can't really match the nostalgia there
What I personally like about it
- Goldeneye: Source totally delivers on the nostalgia factor, even while using a mouse and keyboard
- They even included a paintball mode
- It's always been a hit at my LAN parties, even with people who never played the original Goldeneye
- I didn't have to relearn the maps from my childhood
Ultimately, if you played Goldeneye for the campaign, you'll be disappointed. But if you played the multiplayer, you'll be in nostalgia heaven.
If you never played the original Goldeneye, give this a try anyway. Even standalone, it has a lot to bring to the table. The controls are fully customization, and if you've played any other Source engine games (Half life 2, Portal, Team Fortress 2, Portal 2, and many others) the interface should be fairly familiar.

OOOH! I loved Goldeneye. This is super cool. Perhaps if I get my PC upgraded I may have to play this :) I miss multiplayer Goldeneye, was even just talking about that game with some friends a couple of weeks ago. Thanks for posting! I may have to check this out. Check out my page too if you like. Upvoted & following
