Here Wii Go Again

in #gaming4 months ago

I will admit to not being a massive gamer, but I have messed around with various platforms over the years. My family had a basic console that played variations on Pong before consoles became a big thing. I had a BBC Micro that I played various games on as well as learning programming. Then it was some years before I had several variants of Amiga before my first PC. I did not have another console until about 2007. That was around when the Nintendo Wii came out. At the time they were really hard to get hold of, but I won ours in a silent charity auction at work in time to surprise the kids at Christmas.

Wii Fit

We had a lot of fun with it. It was a revolution in gaming as you could to a lot without pressing buttons just by waving the controller around. That was great for young kids. We amassed a fair few games and would play them together.

Games

For some years now the Wii has been dormant. Our daughter lives elsewhere and our son has more modern devices like a PS5 and Switch. I recently got it out and set it up. Luckily it can still work with our modern TV that does not have SCART sockets. It can sit behind the TV as you only need to get at it to swap discs.

Wii (ooh, dusty!)

I was motivated by wanting to mix up my exercise routine. Like many others we bought Wii Fit that added the balance board. Someone had suggested that I try some yoga to develop some different muscles and it has various exercises around that.

I had to buy some more batteries and soon had it working. Apparently it has been about 11 years since I last did a workout. Somewhere it says I am on my 1999th day and I wonder if that is some limit in the system.

It seems I do need to work on my balance as I did not do so well on some tests. I am getting on a bit, but am reasonably fit thanks to my running. I just find I get some muscles issues that may be helped by more stretching and balancing. I was trying some of the other activities on there that include skiing, football (headers) and puzzle games. I am nowhere near some of my old scores, but that may improve with practice.

As with any exercise I need to make it a habit that fits around other activities, but it is fun. Hearing some of the old audio prompts ("step on me!....Ouch!") made me smile.

I actually have a Sony PS2 as well. That is mainly used for playing DVDs on our second TV. I am working through Game on Thrones with that.

I cannot see myself getting into hours of gaming every night, but I may revisit some of the old favourites. Modern consoles are much more powerful, but once they could provide an immersive 3d world it was good enough for a lot of games.

What are you playing?

Sort:

I am currently playing some new content on fallout whilst I wait for the expansion to stsrgield to drop. Allegedly soon!

1999th day that totally sounds like a hard coded limit somewhere!

I loved the Wii, had some fine times playing games on it. Tennis was such fun with others!

The dance games were good fun when you had people over. I liked that it encouraged playing together.

My PC is getting on a bit, so is probably no good for recent games, but then I don't play on it.

That was the main reason I got an Xbox, the constant upgrades needed for PCs to run the newer games was really annoying me!

I think what they did with the Wii was quite incredible out of the box stuff which pulled them right back into the console light whereas is they tried to directly compete they probably would have bombed

I've not played much with son's PS5 and Switch, but the latter has versions of things like Wii Sports and Mario Kart that look similar to the Wii. Nintendo were always good on playability.

They totally were. I am trying to convince the kids a switch works be a good family investment just so I can pay Mario kart again!

I just recently got my son's PS2 out of the cupboard and a heaps of games too. Lots of good memories. But I need to declutter, he does not want it, I doubt it has any resale value, so it is just sitting in the garage waiting to go to the recycle opt shop or dump shop. I get enough entrainment out of a couple of the Hive games.

I see a lot of old games in charity and second hand shops. Some actually go for good prices, so it's worth checking what you have. The consoles themselves may not be worth much as so many millions were sold.

I better check them out

I'm not much of a gamer myself but it's good to mess around with some stuffs every now and then.

No way! The Wii came out in 2007? It doesn't seem like it is that old. Talk about making me feel horrible! You should check out the couple from Australia that does the Team Body Project fitness thing. They have some easy as well as quite challenging workouts.

I remember the Game & Watch things from the 80s and the Gameboy from 1990. How old do you think I feel?

There are loads of workouts. Just have to find some you can do.

I never had a Gameboy, but my friend did. I used to steal it anytime we went on a trip :)

I borrowed one from a friend and played Tetris. Later I picked up one in a jumble sale, but it only worked from a power supply. My son used it for a while. Later he got a colour one and a DS. He's the big gamer in our house.

The Final Fantasy game they made for the Gameboy was pretty good. I mostly played that.

The Wii was genius at the time. The most fun console I've come across, you could go get any age group involved and was such a good laugh/ so inclusive and intuitive

What are you playing?

Anxiously awaiting Ashes of Creation's Alpha 2 access. A key was given to me for a birthday present a couple of years ago. The release date is promised to be Oct 25 which is one day before my birthday, ironically.

In the meantime my MMO itch has been scratched with some Shroud of the Avatar play.

I have no idea about those. The last game I spent serious time on was Half Life, but that was when the kids were little. I just don't find the time now.

I have no idea about those.

They are both MMOs. AoC will not be access-able (in alpha testing) until October, yet SotA has been around for some time. Kinda OG in the MMO genre. It is described as being a "spiritual successor to the Ultima series". [1]

I just don't find the time now.

That is one attraction with me for AoC. It is not only an interesting ever changing world but seems like it may capture that real RPG aspect of being able of being away from game play for some time yet one can grab your character sheet (in this case log in) and pick right up with your character's development.

The world may have changed in your absence yet so would a table top GM throw some curve balls at you when coming back to their game.

I remember Wii Fit. I loved a lot of it (but not all). I also remember the bowling game, because my mother-in-law had health issues and the children wanted to play games with her. That was something she could do sitting down. She didn't do well, but enjoyed playing with her grandchildren, so it was a win!

Our board stopped working for some reason, so we got another one. That one went out, too. I don't know if the children were too hard on it or what, but we finally gave up on it.

We threw the Wii out when we moved last year, since we don't have as much space, and we haven't used it in ages.

It was very accessible to all ages. Ours still works fine, but I expect some got broken. They sold so many that there will be lots still out there. I'm glad we kept ours.

I hope you enjoy it - again. I kinda wish we still had ours.
