suicide snails?

in #garden7 years ago

I am always wondering why snails climb up on walls, on fences, on trees even on the top of plants.

What do they want there?
There is nothing to eat, no moss, no algae, no water.
And it is also no good protection from enemies.

And there are very many, everywhere.
Here I can still imagine that they have lost in the search for food.

But here?
Are the bunchy jumping snails waiting for the rope?
Or suicide snails?
Or are they too stupid to creep straight ?

I do not know and the snails tell me nothing. Do you have an idea?

Sort:

They are just trying to escape from the French 😉😂

The real "suicide snails" are creeping on the sidewalk. I know from experience. We've had a few snail gut streaks on our sidewalk several times.

Wow.. thera are many snails, i think snail eats leaves.. so that it climb the trees, to get fresh and young leave.

Yes , we got many here this year.
And on the fences, on the dry wood? There is nothing, even no shade.

Hopefully they will not there to commit suicide, here in Aceh Indonesia, snails can be found in rice fields. They are become farmer's enemy because they eat newly planted rice

In hot dry places, snails often climb up vegetation to escape the searing heat on the ground, and they go into suspended animation, "aestivation" until it rains. Some don't survive, of course. Hibernation is usually underground, or at least under cover, not up plants. - Google

Thank you for your help.
I have read this too and similar, but here ? the ground is covered with gras or plants and the temerature is only 25 degrees max.

Got this off from Quora,

"Here is a bizarre possibility....

Their is a parasite which literally turns snails into shambling zombies.

That is not an exaggeration.

The parasite takes over the brain of the unfortunate snail causing it to do things that greatly increase its chances of getting chomped by some lucky (unlucky?) critter, one of those things is climbing on to the tops of grasses and herbs where they are picked off by birds and the less discriminating grazers like cows, the parasite happily goes along for the ride until it is expelled in the bird/bovine waste.

now there's some food for thought!"

Amazing . . I like it. . Thankyou for sharing @dirkzett-english . .

I think they are doing their daily exercise, just like we love to walk around but not always towards food. Do you like this analogy? Upvoted and followed.
