2018s first Sprout

in #gardening7 years ago (edited)

I have waited 5 days to see this amazing birth of life. This little radish sprout makes me very happy. I just love the green of life. I started 3 trays of herbs and radishes indoors under my new grow lights and setup. My goal is to have the ability to have starts ready for the garden for the next growing season. So just to mess around, I planted radishes and 2 herbs, (Flat-leaf Parsley and Basil). I'm starting them now to see how well my grow lights do. I'm not sure how strong my lights are. They are plant / aqua lights, but I couldn't find out what strength they were. There wasn't any direct specs for these lights on any website or on the packaging. And these were the only lights that Home Depot had for plants. So I'm crossing my figures hoping they are great enough to grow seedlings. The cool thing is though, I have been watching this little radish seedling for the last 3 hours and it's been growing! I wish I had a time-lapse of it. If my lights are strong enough, the radish seedling won't get spindly. If it stays short and stout, that means I have the correct lights.

The best bit about growing is watching them pop! I hooe all your seedlings do well

Right! The craziest thing is, just within the last hour 2 more sprouts have popped out of the soil. This just makes the fact winter is here and it's 7degrees outside melt away.

How awesome!!! Get a camera on it taking a automatic photo say every minute or two! That could be interesting to watch them grow

A sure sign of food...Such a symbol of life - when everything everywhere is freezing and frozen. Thanks for sharing a little ray of sunshine!

I hang my grow lights from eyelets in the ceiling and run a thick string through them and hang the lights from the string. That way I can lower the lights down to within a couple of inches from the soil and raise them as the plants grow, keeping the lights just a couple of inches from the tops of the plants. That keeps them from having to reach for the light and becoming leggy. From everything I’ve read about grow lights, as long as the light is a balance of cool and warm tones, it will be as close as you get to natural light, and keeping the light as close to the plants as possible will keep them from reaching.
