RE: Winterizing Temperature Sensitive Fruit Trees

in #gardening7 years ago

We have installed a lot of fruit trees into our orchard. My problem is, I don't want to have to babysit a tree here in the dirty south. We don't get much winter here so it gets under my skin for a tree that cant handle the three days of winter we have here. I have lost so many citrus trees its not funny anymore!I just don't like the process of going out and covering the trees for the winter then on the days that it warms up going back out and uncovering them so they don't cook in our winter sun! Just a lot of work...daily work. I love the pruning process, the mulching and even the planting process, but with such an unpredictable weather pattern here in the south, I would be covering and uncovering every other day. I would probably do best to follow your guidelines though if I ever want to grow citrus here! Thanks for the tips!!

I totally understand! When I covered them yesterday it was 70 degrees outside. One of my olive trees still has leaves on it. But we love figs and have tried for years to get them to grow well. We have even relocated them to other areas on the property. I was hoping this past year when they were downhill and out of the northern wind, they would do better but they didn't. We shall see though.
