Gridcoin Community Hangout #006

A massive shout out to the BeyondBitcoin community & @officialfuzzy for providing the Gridcoin community a room in their mumble server for free.

Another massive thanks to @peppernrino for editing the hangout recordings, without him the released hangout recordings would be slow and of poor quality.

What is Gridcoin?

Gridcoin securely rewards BOINC computation on top of Proof of Stake. Reward allocation is distributed, not centralized unlike other distributed computing related cryptocurrencies.

#005 RSVP & Topic suggestion thread

Why are we holding these hangouts?

  • A mumble conference call can provide significant advantages over communicating via forums and IRC.
  • To create opportunities to inform the public of new Gridcoin, BOINC and related services & their development progress.
  • To bridge relations between the cryptocurrency & BOINC communities.

How long will the hangout last?

The first 3 hangouts lasted 2.5 to 3 hours, with a bit of time beforehand and a few hours of unrecorded hangout time afterwards. The 4th and 5th hangouts lasted approx 1.5hrs.

When the Gridcoin Community Hangouts start really picking up traction we can become more strict with allocated speaking time if need be (so you're not waiting hours to talk).

Want to suggest a topic to discuss?

Reply with your suggestions in this Steem post & order of discussion will be from highest to lowest voted suggestions.

Can we discuss anything?

It's advisable to stay generally on topic, attendees are distributed around the world so they may not (likely won't) share the same views regarding controversial topics not related to Gridcoin/BOINC/Cryptocurrency.

That said, this 'on topic' guideline fizzles away once official recording has ended & the hangout becomes a more relaxed environment.

Discussing the crazy price spike on thursday!
Overview
Charts

We can also discuss if it is the right time to run another campaign on BOINCstats. Present price would probably attract more users than usual, since GRC mining is more profitable now.

Golem Project (http://golemproject.net/) and how this could work together with Gridcoin. I asked the devs and community in their slack channel to join, so hopefully some will join us!

Perhaps someone could make a BOINC project 'adapter' for Golem? Perhaps distributing the golem client crunching on behalf of the project & distributing funds to users?

Perhaps we could host a BOINC project somehow on the Golem network? (unlikely though, it appears to be bursty work units rather than continuous server work units).

We could discuss Golem's integration into Project Rain!

Discussing the result of the 'SSL enforcement' poll.

Outcome of the Gridcoin SSL poll

SSL

With 111,304,097 of 760,444,832 (14.637%) of total vote weight participating, the outcome was to NOT enforce SSL encryption as a mandatory whitelist requirement.

Cryptocointalk thread continuing the SSL discussion!

looks like miner weight needs to be heavier...

I think this poll should only had been for miners. Investors are not communicating with these sites nor are they sending anything that can be compromised or are affected of projects not being whitelisted because of the lack of SSL.
However, the consensus of the miners are still a No even if you dismiss the Investors shares.

It is true however that many investors that took part in this poll has a larger share per user than the miners. Don't forget about the current polls regarding voting balance. But I still think this needs to be looked at on a deeper level in the future.

I think so to, this would only those who run boinc and not those who are investors.
Only think that could make a change is is the fear of lower value if there will be less project in whitelist, but the security and development for thing like this could push the value up.

The security of BOINC could gain more users and make project grow bigger and be a bigger and that could make Gridcoin bigger.

We should work with BOINC project not punish them for what they don´t do, only if they make a really bad.

I hope this is not a dumb question coming from a total Gridcoin noob ;)

I'm becoming very interested in Gridcoin/BOINC as an attempt to utilize our idle servers into useful tasks that can bring us additional revenue.

I have been listening to the Gridcoin hangouts, and have a basic question.

If all the BOINC projects are voluntary and the work is done voluntarily by the participants,

Can you explain where does Gridcoin get its value?

Besides the "miners" that want to stake, who else would want to buy Gridcoin?

Thanks for your answer and sorry if I'm missing something obvious.

Regards,

This is actually a very good question which is probably bothering many new users who are unfamiliar with cryptocurrencies. It looks simple enough, but to answer it properly (so that even a noob finds it clear and understandable), we need a true crypto-master. Don't worry, we have many of them on our team :)

I'll be listening ;) Thanks!

It has value as a cryptocurrency alone, it doesn't require proof of work for creating blocks thus is far more energy efficient than Bitcoin & it has faster block/confirmation times.

Someone may buy GRC to speculate with, another may buy GRC to obtain a larger vote weight within the whitelist polls in order to get their project whitelisted in the future.

Some buy GRC to then rain onto Gridcoin/BOINC users for their completed work.

Is there a consensus on date/time?

9PM GMT 10th September 2016.

We can potentially adjust for different time zones or days during the week: https://cryptocointalk.com/topic/48658-beyond-bitcoin-regular-gridcoin-mumble-conference-calls/

Suchflex is always welcome to talk in Gridcoin Community Hangouts! :)

Neural network lists 27 projects while the GridcoinResearch leaderboard lists 30.
