[Growth Idea] Steam + Steem? A Match Made in Heaven?

Introduction

I'm a huge fan of Cities Skylines, a game found on the Steam entertainment platform. As I was playing today, I realized that it wouldn't be too hard to create a partnership between the Steem blockchain and Steam Entertainment Platform.

This is not a complete thought, I'm throwing this idea out there for YOU to criticize it. If we can come up with a complete flushed out ideas of a solid value proposition, then we can more easily approach Steam for business development.

Powering Game Funding and Content

Forget about having "in-game" currency, with STEEM we have something much more interesting to offer!

Step 1. Funding, Equity, and Rewards

What a game developer could do is to create an SMT and launch an ICO to raise funds. These funds would help to get their game developed. That token would then be a representation of the speculative value of a game. A part of the earnings could go towards buying back or burning token to increase it's value over time.

Step 2. Incentivize Content Production

Within Steam we have something very similar to Steemit.com. Within the game there are "Achievements", "Workshop", "Videos", "Artwork", "Guides", etc.

A thriving community is essential to a successful game. If Steam was integrated with Steem, each game would have a mechanism to create an incentive for people to create guides, answer questions, create artwork, videos, etc.

Step 3. Decentralize Exchange and Buying Games

Steam could have a "master" token (let's call it STEAM) in which people can invest in or buy games. All game tokens could be exchanged for that "Master" STEAM token. All games token could be bought with that master STEAM token. By Steam having a STEAM token under which all games can be purchased, it would create an instantaneous demand for it.

Conclusion - Help me clarify this idea

So, that's the rough idea and I'm sure that there are much more to be done to make this idea clearer. I do believe that Steam and Steem are a match made in heaven. Now let's get this idea flushed out and clarify and then present that idea officially to Steam.

  1. 'valve coin' is issued to the purchaser by issuing a new percentage of the fixed game price.
  2. You can purchase steam games with the paid 'valve coin'.
  3. 'valve' sells the returned coin to the list price on its own exchange. Treat it like a gift certificate. Some discounts are needed in the beginning.
  4. As the number of 'valve coin' merchants increases, market demand for 'valve coin' increases. Applying an advantageous algorithm to the 'valve coin' block chain for small transactions can lead to a small trading market.
  5. The surge in speculation caused by speculation can be restrained by limiting the maximum purchase amount per account.
  6. If successful, valve will be able to preempt the virtual money market in virtually all retail markets around the world, and will be able to collect tremendous commissions in connection with card companies.

end. There are many advantages, but ... The biggest advantage of this 'valve coin' model is that it is a currency that does not require currency exchange in the world within a small tax allowance that is legally permissible. Anywhere in the world.

If am to say about how to integrate steam platform to a little bit mimic steem platform and at the same time boost the number of users is the induction of SMT to their platform. This will go a long way to draw men like magnet. Thanks @cryptoctopus to bring this debative idea in order to make steam platform take another direction .

That sound like a great couple

I find no reason why this wouldn’t work. Even this “rough” idea you presented looks pretty good already. Of course it neeps to be planned further more but i think it would eventually turn into a success.
PS.thanks for the support of Steemgar. I think it is pretty fun and exciting. Greetings from Greece @cryptoctopus

I don't see this happening.
Valve is kind of a conservative business type and it's philosophy is "let the community handle most of things".

But when it come to sell games, valve hold a tight control. The demand for the ability to trade games on Steam is being requested by the community for a long long long time, and it's not in valve interest to allow people to "sell" unused games. It would hurt their business.

Also, they dropped support on BTC exaclty because of the price volatility associated with cryptos. So, business wise, it's not very good for valve to sell games for a currency that is too volatile.

And Valve is too big already to be able to implement such big change.

And i don't think STEEM and SMTs would be the best choice to something like this. The system is too complex, and when it comes to use coins as currencies, simplicity of use is the key.

But this idea could work as a brand new company, with a totally new business model. May not be profitable though...

Check this article from @techblogger. We will probably have something similar on the future, but probably not Steam.

Would be really great to have decentralized gaming built on steam.
I believe the two would make a great pair and still better, the names got a ring to it

I believe this would be a really great match or steemit could go out on their own and do this

The only problem so far, is that the greater Steem community just does not care for games on the run on the Steem Blockchain.

There are some great games run already, with incredible engagement from a few key players that are largely ignored by the Steem community. Game masters like @daclawboyz, @happyme and @lordnigel put in a ton of effort every day for their love of their games and the Blockchain, but are not rewarded.

Your idea @cryptoctopus is a good one... but why would any game developer ever risk working with SMTs and the Steem platform, when the community ignores its own gamers?

Your idea will only work once there is actual, tangible proof that there is a supportive, vibrant gamer community on this platform.... and at the moment, there just isn't.

Although the idea may sound great initially, I believe that would introduce far more complications than it would solve. Steam is a multi-million dollar company and they are unlikely to give up the lucrative market they already have by diluting it and sharing profits with others.

Why do we need Steam anyway? People are free to create their own games and attach them to Steem through Steemconnect RIGHT NOW. If there was more interest in my own games and I was earning enough to pay for some technical support I would already be working on producing real-time games that could be played here. As it stands, my zombie games are updated daily with player moves and participants are rewarded for playing. It is all done manually and requires a lot of my time each day with no days off. In return, my rewards are less than a dollar per day! Where is the community support for playing games within the Steem universe? Creating a real-time game can generally take upwards of a year of full-time work by coders, artists and game designers working together! Who would put in that much effort when nobody cares and the games are ignored anyway?

I can't argue there as I love both steem and steam.
How cool would that be for us gamers.

Greatt.. I see great prospects in this. Hopefully

Great idea, my friend and I think that it is possible to transform this idea into real ity. Can try to link everything based on of Steem blockchain and sell the Steam markers for the Steem. Thank you @cryptoctopus

Cities Skylines is a wonderful game! although i haven't returned to it since the transit dlc! I bet it's even better now!

For Steam, Users could get rewarded for their contributions to the workshop with mods and guides of the game, helpful interactions with other players, in game economies for online games, the possibilities are endless on this aspect if big MMOs adopted the system!

I also like the idea of funding game development with ICOs imagine all the crazy ideas that would get funded! a platform similar to Steam Greenlight could be created functioning similar to a kickstarter but as an ICO.

Idea is cool. Also there are some games having huge potential to take attention like pubg. so many player playing the game and trading the items. if they will make entegration to steem then you can trade the items via steem. and it will take so much users to steemit.

It's quite an interesting idea, you know whenever i think about steem i always thinks about steam too because they are quite a similar name and can be useful for each other if planned smartly,

This point is quite interesting and also suitable for Steemit types,so let's see how many different ideas people are going to give for this topic.

Thanks for validating the idea :-)

Thanks for this great post.........../////////

I vote this idea. This part of introducing inventives to encourage users to create guides, answer questions, create artwork and videos is a huge plus. Humans naturally tend to be more dedicated to something if an incentive is attached to it. I feel that this will makes waves just like steemagar

I particularly admire the idea of inventing a master token in which people can invest in or buy games. I want to advice that you should hurriedly execute your plan now that the price of Crypto is still on the low side. This will ensure that people's small investments go a long way

The upvotes on this post indicates interest in this. I am not sure exactly how, but if SMTs can work with communities, and if within a STEAM game players could somehow generate upvotes and curation rewards based on game play achievement this could increase participation with STEEM via SMTs. I assume for players to generate STEEM they would need to have an option where they could use their Steem Power in the context of the game to reward game players. Intriguing.

A rough idea of this could be having all in-game achievements added to a players profile layout, with the possibility to upvote and make a comment on a players achievement.
And to avoid a possible "overload" of achievements being streamed on a profile, it has a separate section, and a player could choose if they want all, some, or none of their achievements to be displayed.
For example, I definitely would want my "Career Criminal" achievement from GTA 5 displayed and viewable (I used to brag all the time about), but I don't really care if people saw every achievement from GTA 5.

I think this match between these two platforms can add another dimension to both by adding the aspect of leisure and games to our community and the decentralization aspect to Steam ... I do not think the names are close and similar. it's a coincidence...

I see great prospects in this. You have to be careful and ensure that you implement at the right time, preferably after much publicitymight have been carried out. This will break boundaries just like steemagar

I actually always thought it was a great idea. With Steam Steem will grow much further. You just pushed this idea much further through to next step. It sounds too natural together to ignore it.

This idea could have some legs. Reviews could be monetized for existing games and might attract more high quality feedback if beta testing for new games and programs were monetized as well. Great idea!

From the look of things, steam is a perfect match for STEEM. I think they will go along well as you said

it wouldn't be too hard to create a partnership between them

This Idea (although rough) could be successful and spark many more ideas and projects with Steam.
Am I the only one looking at this from a "Small Indie trying to launch their dream game, but don't have any big buyers". Imagine Steem being used with Steam to help fund and create indie games.
This thought alone is why I'm in.

I don't understand the value. Creating a token that must be used on steam will be more of an inconvenience.

I really like the idea, but I do think it would be more difficult than you make it out to be. I'm really doubting that it would be easy to actually secure such a partnership between Valve and Steemit.

If you look at the bigger picture, why would a big company like Valve create a partnership with the much smaller Steemit? I agree that the idea itself is good, but it would be very risky for Valve to attach their name to something that's so experimental.

I would be awesome of steam and steem could be partners. I can't wait to see that day come :)

I wouldn't be surprised if the idea of something dat has been bouncing around the Steam offices. They used to be one the first to accept crypto payments. Bitcoin was too unstable, so it could be advantageous for them to look at an in house currency...

Actually, I don't think it's a good idea. It would be good for people who already mess around with crypto, but it would drive away most other gamers because it would be confusing to them.

But the biggest reason it would never happen is beacuse of Valve's user control and safety. If you observe throughly, everything steam offers is under a very restrict enviroment. From the ingame shift+tab browser to the opened chat links leading to your regular browser instead, they try very hard to keep steam very clean and to not get associated with external influences.

They already have early access as a way to fund new games and devs can always ask users to register on steemit and support them here, though.

If this idea gets Steem in 2018 then in 5 years it may be great. Love the integration.
Very creative.
Joy

They can be a match made in heaven indeed, even their names are similar haha.

There could even be a way to create a market place where items from different games could be exchanged since their information is stored in the same blockchain. For example, exchanging an armor from Skyrim for a missile from Civilization VI. I mean, by applying blockchain technology to a gaming platform you can create an economy involving all of the times of the games involved.

And just as you have been rewarding the winners of the Agar matches, perhaps it could be possible to implement a system (in online games mostly) where the players are rewarded with tokens according to their achievements. This might sound like a stretch but its possible, in fact there is a blockchain project that is developing just this called Chimaera that I was researching yesterday for a post I am going to publish in a few hours (I can put the link here if you want when its published)

Blockchain (and projects like Steem in particular) can make the gaming industry better for everyone involved.

Cheers man!

Great post! I like the idea, if this was to happen the interest would be huge. Game developers could potentially gain more interest in their games by offering 'steam tokens' by unlocking acheivements in their games, similar to what CryCash is planning with their plink app.

Steem and Steam hand in hand, what a dream!!This is where I spend most of my time anyway haha!

My focus would be on creators at first, Imagine now how much amazing mods and other sub mods will come out of the Steam workshop with the right reward!!!
I mean I've spent thousands of hours on sandbox games like Minecraft, Project Zomboid, Don't Starve Together, Starbound.

They all can be used as tools for creating more content too! (educational, entertainment, gameplay)

That's an excellent idea! Consdering Steam's previous involvement with Bitcoin, the idea shouldn't sound too crazy to them. I imagine it would help a lot of small independent game developers, as well as remove the treshold for spending money within games in general. I'm just curious what Steam thinks about Steem having such a similar name. Steemians are confused enough with Steem, STEEM, Steemit, SBD etc. so just imagine how confused Steamians will be:o

hi @cryptoctopus just so i can answer your question better of helping to clarify your idea I wanted to ask what is the main challenge Steam is currently facing in their platform/system and how can steemit platform improve on their existing infrastructure or possibly carve out a new market niche?

So when someone first told me about steem I was like “wut???” Steam does not have its own cryptocurrency what are you talking about they are not a blogging platform.

The biggest issue here is Steam for a while was accepting BTC and then they pulled the plug on it. They where not happy with the high volatility cryptocurrency has. Part of the bigger issue they also had was the high transactions fees. Another issue is going be some confusion with branding. Steam and Steem. It’s quite easy to mix up and the way people pronounce one or another are very similar. I’m not sure how open they are having a direct link between them any sort of cryptocurrency even more so if consumers get confused.

Instead of the steam token I think it be more better geared towards a humblebundle token of sorts. Along with that business model of choosing who to reward when a purchase and how much to pay. They also do produce steam keys when you buy from that site. Along with certain things being allowed to be bought using cryptocurrency the last time I check.

While I’m not sure how open a company like humblebundle would be you could look further into them for creating a similar business model expect a heavy empathies on a more active developer side.

I have no clue how they even got steam to allow them to get steam keys for handling the distribution portion of the game. Somewhere I’m sure a % paid out in fiat currency I would hope would resolve any issues.

a very great post ... thanks for sharing ... you are very extraordinary @cryptoctopus

Oh yeah I've thought of this before too! Haha, wouldn't it be nice if they joined forces eh?

I support this thing the steem blockchain should be connected with steam entertainment platform as it will help developers to receive fair awards and can also help them to resolve issues related the game developing
