What Benefits Do They Have?

Some studies show how videos games increase hand-eye coordination, as well as improving the minds ability to process information, on top of that improving eyesight in so the eyes can decipher things easier at night. These things include while driving you can see those animals along the side of the road or other vehicles that might pull out on you last second.

What Video Games Do For Your Brain

Your brain while playing video games is constantly solving problems, multitasking in order to figure everything out, and/or managing resources you have in games that are strategic. Not to mention the fact while playing video games, in most games at least, you are typically working with other people as a unit/team. This promotes teamwork while providing other vital life skills such as socializing with other, people skills, amongst other traits.

The best side of video games is how it keeps your brain young and firing, constantly solving the issues at hand. In doing so it keeps the brain from developing Alzheimer's Disease in the later stages of life with playing games throughout their lives. On top of all that, it is an outlet for people who need to relieve stress and anger. Games are rewarding, every time you complete a puzzle, level, or mission, your brain releases the feel good chemical known as dopamine.

Negative Effects

However negative side effects can come from video games if you play them for too long. For children, they might become socially isolated from the lack of human interaction, it can cause people to go down the path of obesity from being sedentary for such a long time. For young adolescents video games can teach the wrong values, making them do things of which are bad, and they are unaware it is due to certain video games.

Conclusion:

All in all, video games are bad as long as they are not over played, or abused. However, that goes for anything in life, too much water can be a bad thing. If you play video games you are doing more good than harm, as long as you do it moderately they will benefit your way of life.

I don't think video games are bad for if they are played in a timely manner. When I was in college back in 2008, many sports players over did gaming which resulted in low scores on test and even poor results on gamely! speaking from my experience. I currently have the Xbox one and PS3 consoles but I rarely play neither, sometimes it just feels like I'm wasting time.

I completely agree as long as it is done in moderation. The issue is people overkill everything these days. I am an avid gamer and probably will be for a good portion of my life. However, I am a personal trainer as well, which means I workout and get out in society, not allowing games to consume me.

I am glad to hear from you, @raingod941 and I hope you enjoyed the article!

To much of a good thing almost always is a bad thing. This goes for medicine, sports, food as well as for video games.
I think If schools would use them in the right ways they could do a lot of good - just look at reaction time, solving of riddles, ...
But the dose must be right ;)

I could not agree more with your comment, I too wish they would bring video games in for educational purposes and advancements.

Children are taken in by video games, I remember when I was a young kid in school, those video games back then were entertaining and at the same time I was learning. With the right dosage in games, our brains can become more alert, healthier, and stronger.

Thank you for commenting, @theaustrianguy especially with the field of work you are going in. Cheers :D

Good pros and cons. I love game mechanics and stories, so I try to play fitness video games to improve my health. As for couch games, I try to choose games on the shorter side or that have a cooperative element so I won't get sucked in without an end in sight.

Thank you, as do I, the Wii was a great invention for people who want to get in shape as well as play video games, and after Sony and Microsoft following the trend.

I need to pick those games as well seeing as it is so easy to lose track of time. Arena style multiplayer games are the best ones to pick, these increase your reaction time, as well as your hand eye coordination.
