WHEN IS BEING OVERWEIGHT A HEALTH PROBLEM
In our appearance-obsessed society, many people believe that overweight is a problem of aesthetics. But being overweight is a question medical because it can seriously affect a person's health.
The weight properly
When experts use the term "overweight", does not refer to having a few extra pounds. Everyone has a body fat, and some few extra pounds does not pose any risk to health in the majority of people.
Health problems that can arise from the fact of being overweight go far beyond those who are accustomed to hearing, such as diabetes or heart problems. Being overweight can also affect the joints, breathing, sleep, mood and energy levels. Or is that being overweight can have a negative impact on the quality of a person's overall life.
Define overweight
When people eat more calories to burn, your body builds up the surplus in the form of fat calories.
A little more body fat poses no risk to health in most people. But when a person is accustomed to eating more calories than burn, fat accumulates it in the body.
Eventually, you reach a point in which excess body fat may have a negative effect on the health of the person. Doctors use the terms "overweight" and "obese" to describe people who are at risk of developing health problems related to excess weight.
As you've probably heard, there are more people overweight than in the past, which has led some experts to talk about an "obesity epidemic". This health problem affects both young people and adults - one-third of children ages 2 and 19 years are obese or overweight. And there are young people who are developing health problems that previously only affected adults, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes.
Why do people develop overweight?
Obesity is often by families. Some people have a genetic tendency to gain weight more easily than others because they burn calories more slowly. When it was scarce food it supposed a great advantage. But now that in the majority of industrialized countries food is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, an efficient metabolism which in the past ensured our survival has become against us.
Although genes influence very much on the type and body size, the atmosphere also plays a role. Today many people are gaining weight since it makes elections food unhealthy (like fast food or junk food) and inadequate family habits (like eating in front of the TV instead of around the table). The snacks and drinks rich in calories and little nutritional value, large portions and sedentary lifestyle are also contributing to the current epidemic of obesity.
Sometimes, some people take refuge in food when they have emotional problems, for example, when they are sad, worried, anxious, altered, stressed or even boring. In these cases, they tend to eat more than they need.
Assess the weight
Determine if a teen is overweight can be more complicated to do it in an adult because teens are still growing and being developed.
Physicians and other health care professionals often use a measure called index BMI (BMI) to determine if a person has or not overweight.
Doctors consider a teen obese when their BMI is above 95% of BMI of the population of teenagers of the same gender and age. When a person has a BMI that is above 85% but less than 95% of the BMI of the population of teenagers of the same gender and age it is said that you are overweight.
Overweight-related health problems
Obesity is harmful for both the body and the mind. Not only makes a person is tired and feel uncomfortable with your body, but that the fact of having to endure and putting more weight subject to the body too much effort, especially the bones and joints of the legs. And when they grow, overweight children are more likely to develop diabetes and heart problems.
Health problems that affect overweight teens include:
· Blount's disease (or tibia vara). The fact that growing bones have to carry excess weight may cause this bone deformity in the calves.
· Osteoarthritis. Wear and inflammation of joints that are carrying excess weight can cause this problem articular painful early.
· Displacement of the femoral head. Obese children and young people are at risk of developing this painful problem hip requiring immediate attention and surgery to prevent the joint from deteriorating still further.
· Asthma. Obesity is associated with breathing problems that can have a negative impact on social relations, since it is possible that those affected can not keep up with the other boys of his age. Asthma can also impact on sports, and may make it difficult in extreme cases to travel between classes.
· Sleep apnea. This condition (where a person stops breathing temporarily while you sleep) is a serious problem for many adults and children with overweight. Not only disrupts sleep but that sleep apnea can pursue with a deep fatigue and have a negative impact on the ability of concentration. May also cause long-term heart problems.
· High blood pressure. When the blood pressure is too high, the heart must pump stronger and arteries must carry blood to higher pressure. If the problem persists for a long time, the heart and arteries may stop working as they should. Although it is very rare in young people, high blood pressure is more common in young people who are overweight or obese.
· High cholesterol. Long before bad, found obese teens may have anomalous concentrations of lipids in blood, including high LDL (of low density, or "bad") cholesterol, low HDL (of high density, or "good") cholesterol and high triglycerides. This increases the risk of heart attack and stroke with age.
· Gallstones. Accumulation and hardening of the bile in the gallbladder forms gallstones, which can be painful and require surgery.
· Fatty liver. Fat accumulation in the liver can cause inflammation, scarring, and permanent liver damage.
· Benign intracranial hypertension. Is a benign picture characterized by the increase of intracranial pressure which is a very uncommon cause of strong headaches in obese adults and young people. In addition to headache, symptoms may include vomiting, unsteady gait, and vision problems that, if not treated, can become permanent.
· Polycystic ovarian syndrome. Girls overweight sometimes cease to menstruate in some cycles - or rule disappears them completely - and may have a too high concentration of testosterone (male hormone) in blood. Although all the girls have some testosterone in the blood, an excess of this hormone can interfere with ovulation and can cause excessive growth of body hair, worsening of acne and the men's own baldness. Polycystic ovary syndrome is associated with resistance to insulin, a precursor to type 2 diabetes. Overweight women also may have fertility problems.
· Resistance to insulin and type 2 diabetes. When there is an excess of body fat, insulin is less effective for glucose, the main source of energy for the body, reach the cells. Hence, more insulin is needed to maintain a normal concentration of sugar in blood. In some young people, the insulin resistance evolves to diabetes type 2 (high concentration of sugar in the blood).
· Depression. Obese people are more likely to be depressed and have low self-esteem.
Fortunately, it is never too late to make changes that allow you to effectively control the weight and avoid the health problems that this may cause. These changes don't have to be radical. For starters, propose you reduce sugar-sweetened beverages, not repeated in meals and exercising more, even if they are only five to ten minutes a day

Great piece! Earned a follow from me. :)
All points you made are valid but i think an emphasis on exercise is lacking. The overall effects of sedentary life style is much worse than junk food or bad eating habits. But exercise makes up for some of negative effects from sedentary lifestyle. Sure, don't wait to be very healthy if you exercise an hour after sitting still for 10 hours, but there are papers on the unbelieveable positive effects of just 1 hour of exercise.
So in the future, i am hoping you will emphasise the exercise part more. Other than that, splendid work!
Cheers.
