The fact that not getting a full night of rest can cause sluggishness, fatigue, shorter attention span, and little to no determination is not rocket science. In fact, it is commonly known and quite straight forward. Getting less than a full eight hours of sleep, or even being on an irregular sleep schedule, can greatly affect an individual’s performance throughout the day. Not only will insufficient sleep affect one's performance and productivity, but also the way one feels in general. Lack of sleep can cause and individual to feel physically drained, grumpy, achy, and eventually, physically ill. Overall, sleep is necessary to rejuvenate and replenish the mind and body for optimal functioning the following day.
Firstly, sleeping an insufficient amount of time can affect one’s ability to remember and maintain new information. This is due to the fact that the mind is not well rested enough to focus on the new information being presented. As a result, one will not fully remember this information as a result of lack of concentration. This is a main reason why teachers and parents often say “Make sure you get a good night’s sleep” before big tests and quizzes, long days, etc. Try to think back to a time when you did not do well on a test or exam. Odds are, a leading factor to this was that you did not sleep well enough the night before.
Secondly, I’m sure everyone can relate to lack of sleep resulting in crankiness, irritableness, moodiness, and overall the feeling of being physically drained. This affects an individual's interactions with others throughout the course of the day, often resulting in short brusque conversations which do not hold much intellectual value. Also, this causes one to lose motivation for the day. For example, if someone is feeling sluggish, they are less likely to have the motivation to complete all of the necessary errands on their daily agenda, whether it be homework, a project, household chores, or whatever the case may be. Therefore, sufficient rest is what allows the body to feel replenished, aiding in an individual’s motivation to complete tasks on the following day.
Lastly, being sleep deprived can eventually lead to physical illness such as a cold, or the flu and other viruses. Overtime, lack of rest takes its toll on an individual’s immune system. After going through the daily activities such as school, work, errands, perhaps the gym or catching up with friends, the body needs rest that way the immune system can keep the body strong and healthy. Losing sleep can cause imbalances in the cells and proteins that our bodies need in order to fight off infections. With that said, inadequate amounts of sleep can cause an individual to become sick with a minor cold or even an aggressive virus.
In all, sleep is an important and necessary aspect of life which most people overlook. Individuals often times think they can pack their day full with activities, stay up all hours of the night, and be alright to function the next day. However, this is not at all the case. Sleeping irregularly and getting insufficient rest will take its toll on even the healthiest person’s body and immune system. This will inevitably result in lack of concentration, determination, irritableness, and even possible illness. Sleep is needed in order effectively go through everyday functions, therefore, sleeping the bodies required amount will result in an individual’s optimal productivity.
