The Nrf2 Pathway is the Mother-Load of Biohacks.
I stumbled onto the Nrf2 pathway while looking into the health benefits of chocolate. Chocolate is made from cocoa beans and cocoa beans have a compound called epicatechin in them. Epicatechin is known to extend the lifespan of laboratory animals.
Animal study: epicatechin from cocoa extends life expectancy
http://www.ergo-log.com/epicatechin-from-cocoa-extends-life-expectancy.htmlEpicatechin up-regulates the sirtuin 1 longevity gene.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26993496
As I looked further I kept finding research papers referencing Nrf2, a few are listed below.
Cerebroprotection of flavanol (-)-epicatechin after traumatic brain injury via Nrf2-dependent and -independent pathways
http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0891584915011806-)-Epicatechin protects hemorrhagic brain via synergistic Nrf2 pathways
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3984761/
So I decided to find out what the Nrf2 pathway is and you wont believe what I found.
Nrf2 is a protein. The Nrf2 protein is bound in a dormant state within all of our cells. “When [the] Nrf2 [protein] is activated, it enters the [cell] nucleus and it turns on, [or turns up], several hundred [survival] genes”. “These genes enable cells to survive in the face of several different kinds of stress, especially oxidative stress, which occurs when free radicals and other oxidants overwhelm the body’s natural antioxidant enzymes””. https://www.lifevantage.com/faqs/how-is-protandim-a-nrf2-activator/
So one biohack could turn on, or turn up, several hundred “survival genes” and the sirtuin 1 longevity gene! Finding this really got my attention.
The table below shows some foods with their epicatechin content.
Food | Epicatechin | Units |
---|---|---|
Cocoa, powder | 158.30 | mg/100 g |
Dark chocolate | 70.36 | mg/100 g |
Milk chocolate | 14.58 | mg/100 g |
Chocolate milk beverage | 5.58 | mg/100ml |
Apple [Cider], peeled | 28.67 | mg/100 g |
Blackberry, raw | 11.48 | mg/100 g |
Grape [Black] | 5.24 | mg/100 g |
Grape [Green] | 0.49 | mg/100 g |
Red raspberry, raw | 5.05 | mg/100 g |
Broad bean seed, whole, raw | 37.55 | mg/100 g |
Fresh pea, raw | 0.01 | mg/100 g |
Tea [Green], infusion | 7.93 | mg/100ml |
Tea [Green], bottled | 1.14 | mg/100ml |
The data in the table was attained from the phenol-explorer. The link is below and you can use it to find the epicatechin content of other foods. http://phenol-explorer.eu/contents/polyphenol/125
WARNING
Some finished cocoa products such as chocolates and cocoa powders are known to contain lead and cadmium. Cadmium is a heavy metal that is both carcinogenic (causes cancer) and mutagenic (mutates DNA) https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12796780
In an article titled Lead in Cocoa Products: Where Does Contamination Come From? David A. Taylor writes that “manufactured cocoa products frequently have higher lead concentrations than other foods, even though cocoa beans, the main ingredient, have some of the lowest reported lead levels for any natural food”. So theres lead in processed cocoa products. Thats not good considering that chocolate consumption is increasing. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1281312/
Mike Adams, the Health Ranger writes that “Both ConsumerLab.com and the Natural News Forensic Food Lab have simultaneously confirmed high levels of the toxic heavy metal cadmium in cacao powder products. High levels of lead have also been found by Natural News in one brand of cacao powder. High levels of toxic cadmium are consistently found in cacao POWDER products, across many brands”. Mike Adams goes on to write that “cacao NIBS tend to be significantly lower in cadmium and other heavy metals”. So cacao NIBS are the best option and there available in health food stores. http://www.naturalnews.com/045545_cacao_powder_cadmium_lab_testing_results.html

Conclusion
Epicatechin can biohack several hundred “survival genes” and the sirtuin 1 longevity gene causing the genes to up-regulate their expression. Epicatechin is found in cocoa products such as chocolates and cocoa powders as well as other foods. (see table above)
High levels of lead and cadmium are frequently found in processed cacao products like chocolates and cocoa powders. Cadmium is of particular concern because is both carcinogenic (causes cancer) and mutagenic (mutates DNA).
High levels of lead and cadmium are NOT found in cacao nibs which are minimally processed.
Comments
If the steemit community is interested in this topic I plan to do some updates to the article. The updates will cover any dietary supplements that can biohack the 169 enzymes that are responsible the repair of DNA and the 200 genes that are associated with longevity. It would be an enormous project and an expensive one. It would be expensive because a lot of the research papers are behind pay walls and it can cost $35 just to access one research paper.
Also writing is not my strong point I am sure that there are errors and would appreciate suggestions to correct them.
Remark
Dr Gottlieb you are the commissioner of the Food & Drug Administration. Aren't you suppose to be protecting our food supply? How is it possible that the high levels of lead and cadmium that are frequently found in chocolates and cocoa powders has escaped your attention? Who is going to benefit from the increase in cancers that the cadmium may cause? If you are lurking around steemit looking for someone to sue please comment, I would like to have answers to these questions.

Hey @tombot I've just stumbled on this which you may find interesting: https://qz.com/1040668/a-pirating-service-for-academic-journal-articles-could-bring-down-the-whole-establishment/
Academic publishing is a racket. The editorial boards censer a lot of good research and hide the rest behind pay walls. What we need is universal access to research. The steemit founders should make a site geared to academic research. Its a business model that is ripe for disrupting.
Stigmatatata from Lake Titicaca!
Stigmatatata from lake titikaka (Beavis and butthead) I found it on youtube.
Thanks Ill check it out.
Very interesting article @tombot, nice to see another person with an interest in longevity on here too!
I wondered why certain Cocao products were labelled as unsafe by California. BulletProof's cacao tea was one I noticed before.
I've been having Lindt's Intense Mint lately, but after seeing that list I think I might switch to Ghirardelli or maybe an organic brand.
I'll also have a look into the nibs. I used to buy chocolate that had them in it, but they used to get stuck in my teeth haha!
Following you to see what else you uncover.
I use cacao nibs because I'm trying to avoid sugar and the heavy metals. They are bitter but Ive become use to it.
Wise move! :-)
I've just seen a bunch on Amazon, so next time I put an order in there I'll be adding a bag for sure.
Thanks again @tombot!
Check out my post on caffeic acid if you haven't already done so. Ive started putting rosemary, thyme and sage in everything that I eat. Ive noticed the elasticity of my skin has increased. Ive been using the herbs for about a week now and they actually taste good.
https://steemit.com/health/@tombot/can-biohacking-double-lifespan-2-0
I did see that (and part 1 too) after looking at your other posts. :-)
I've got some Thyme growing, so I just need to find some ways to work that into my food when it's ready. (It should probably be ready now I think).
I also noticed spearmint on the list there too; I've started drinking mint tea (I already drink white and green too) so that is probably also doing me some good. Tastes a little weird to start with, but I'm getting used to it now. Seemed like drinking hot toothpaste to begin with haha.
I've never heard of "chokeberry" before though, so will have to look that up and see what it is.
Thanks again @tombot
I am your follower, and i saw your posts. you are doing good:) @ronaldmcatee
Thanks. I'm also learning a lot along the way.
i Think you know, i am your follower :) that's because i like your posts :) @ronaldmcatee
Thanks. I have more stuff that I'm working on and i hope to get another post this week.
