”Generally, English words for which there are no Hebrew equivalents are unreal concepts detached from reality.” - Rabbi Daniel Lapin
My mother was a stickler for not using the word “adolescent.” Maybe it was her upbringing on a dairy farm and the expectation that you were out doing chores by the age of 6. All I know is that she expected us to grow up to be adults and not act like teenagers.
To my knowledge, mom never studied Hebrew or dove into any of the Biblical languages. She did often point out that Jesus was teaching in the synagogue at the age of 12, and was respected by his elders - that seemed to be enough evidence to her.
Now that I have had some training, it has been enjoyable to confirm her principles and encourage the discipline she desires from her kids.
None of my siblings have gone through a “Rumschpringe.” - that is an Amish or Mennonite term for “sowing your wild oats.”
Yes, there have been some good stories from less than ideal life choices but nobody is in jail and all of us are having success in life.
I continue to be amazed at what The Lord weaves into His language. There are incredible truths buried within the Torah that prove to be foundational for living a wisdom filled life.
As the Scripture says that we reap what we sow, we would do well to lead our younglings to bigger and better things without excusing poor decisions.
I didn't label the "milestones" our kids entered either. They never went through the so called terrible twos....and 2/3 of them were pretty good through their teenage years. Typical testing periods and what not. But I always had expectations for them to be adults in training.
I also didn't expect that once they turned 18 they were on their own and still can't figure out the mindset on that....they are 17 one day they at midnight you have no more say in their lives? Makes no sense.
Parenting isn't cut and dried like that. You are a parent until they can fly....but you'll always be a mother or father.
So true. Each child is different even though the values we instill are consistent.
What Deb said...Hmm, Amish in your background...I can see that, yeah...sort of...Um, NO! lol
Lol! It is more so on Abi’s side - she has cousins in the Amish church and her grandparents were involved for a time as well. I have an offshoot of Amish on my side of the family called German Baptist. Gotta love all these denominations. :)
For sure, but I was alluding to the mistrust of technology, and you are certainly no Luddite, my friend :)
The character of a person is formed from the mother's womb, from there the importance of the care we receive when we are children, and from the age of five we go with the supervision of our parents and teachers acquiring the necessary skills to approach the future life . Already at age twelve we already have a trained character but there I am in agreement with your article that to classify with the word adolescent to a person perhaps is not a very accurate term since it implies implicito a disorderly life and without responsibility. Thank you my dear friend!
It's a language I'm curious about. The have 3000 years of history. And every letter in the alphabet is said to correspond to a numeric. Thank you for sharing @lydon.sipe
I just learned about the numeric equivalent a few days ago - it is fascinating.
The Hebrew language is very similar to the Arabic language
great post thanks for sharing
